As a longtime X-men reader I loved it. It took me right back to that classic Byrne/Claremont era. I read it as a long “what if”
One of the reasons I enjoyed it so much was I’m not liking the current iteration of books. This took me back to the team I loved.

I’ve been thinking of picking it up for exactly this reason.
I grew up on Claremont X-Men, and it was the first series that I really followed (rather than just dipping in). I liked the Morrison and Whedon runs back in the early 2000s just fine, but have not really clicked with anything since, so I’m hoping that Byrne can bring a little of that back for me.

It was definitely worth it! Eagerly awaiting vol 2 but I've yet to find a firm publication date.

I didn't like it. It lacked any of the feel of the Claremont/Byrne issues and was really disjointed.
It was bad fan fiction by a guy who once ruled the industry.

I didn't care for it. But I think Byrne's been washed as a writer for at least this millennium, honestly since the late 80s.

Honestly I think Byrne's always been incredibly hit or miss as a writer, with his solo work usually being carried by his art. Even his most recognisable runs like West Coast Avengers and Superman have some real stinkers of storylines

He's also just known for being really rude when people criticise him on his blog. Where a lot of these comments, among other comments, started
Also him comparing transgender people to pedophiles is crazy considering he's famously a fan of couples with uncomfortable age gaps

Yep, there's that and the fact he retconned Reed and Sue to have met when Reed was an adult and Sue was a child (though they only start dating when she's an adult) and some Alpha Flight couples also have decent age gaps.
For the record I'm not trying to imply anything about Byrne, I'm just saying doing that so often (usually in a very uncritical way) and then comparing a marginalised community to pedophiles is not a good look

What he had to say about Kirby in the 80’s and Byrne being a proud “company man” seems to definitely conflict with him now in his older years going off and making his own x-men series as if x-men was his creation, and not corporate property. so I wonder if maybe he’s changed his views? Or they’ve just gotten weirder..

Last I checked it was the origin of most of the controversial statements listed on his Wikipedia page He is fully detached from a lot of reality and there's a reason why he doesn't have the standing that Chris Claremont has even though both of them are not the creators they were in the '70s.

Yeah the creation of it is intriguing , it makes me wonder have any other comic artists done the same, not just making custom art of the characters you used to draw but creating whole secret comic runs? Was this rejected by marvel? I would guess that he could have pitched them on it.
Or was the whole point that he had to do it himself and by himself because Byrne alone, not marvel editorial, knows what an x-man comic should be.

I'm about halfway through it. It's ok. The art is cool, but the story lacks the human moments between characters that Claremont provided. The story lacks emotion throughout. It's basically empty calories.

He draws Cyclops with a really long face in this, and the Hidden Years book. I noticed him started doing it with characters in his DC Generations book. I really don’t like it.

I own it but haven’t read it. Unfortunately, this and his lost years book spend a lot of time in the savage land. It’s kind of a bummer, since I didn’t pick up the lost years for that very reason. I don’t understand why he is so obsessed with the island.

As you would expect, the art is not top tier like it was in his prime. I was hoping for a nostalgic blast but was kinda meh over the whole thing.

I read it back when it was just a fan comic he posted to his blog. It’s mediocre as hell. He’s phoning it in at this point and it leans into all of Byrne’s worst writing habits. It getting published is an embarrassing cash grab by marvel

If it's X-men with John Byrne's name on it, I'm sold!
I bought this and was pleasantly surprised that the old man can still tell solid stories!
I find it better than any X-book that Marvel has put out in a long time.

Ok, let me have my little rant about this book, please.
I have bought this book twice, or at least tried to and it's getting absolutely ridiculous how I still can't get my book in my hands. First time I tried I bought it from an ebay seller that was based on the UK. I thought it was fine as I really was not in a hurry, and it will take them 3 weeks to ship the book. A month passed and nothing, then I reached out to them they said they had ran out of stock and they had no idea when they would have the item again. I was furious! I got a full refund.
Now, 2-3 weeks ago I decided to try to finally buy a copy and found this seller based in America. They had a 1 week shipping period, I thought that was fine. Then...nothing happened. Went back to see my purchased history and saw that the delivery date had changed to fucking October! The book was again out of stock. The little pricks had been selling the book without actually having inventory. I demanded a full refund and I finally got a message from the seller that they were going to accept a full refund.
It's been 2 times now. Do I even bother a third time? I REALLY want that book! What's going on with ebay sellers? Is this common??
