General Discussion Coros Apex 4 Review : Pros and Cons ( So frustratingly close to perfection! )

Post image
55 Upvotes

So I got the Coros Apex 4 about a week ago after 8 years of wearing an Apple Watch followed by about a year with a Garmin.

I will just drop a quick review, or much like a pros and cons list. Some of them I have never seen anybody talk about, which "affect" me the most. As much as the device is far from being perfect, it is also so frustratingly close to being perfect. Well for me.

PROS :

- Maps ! Of course. I won't go into the detail here, you know.
Hardware ! If all the CONS in the following section are about software, the hardware is ON POINT. Love the quality of titanium bezels and sapphire glass. I love the rotating dial (even if software implementation could be better).

- Comfort ! Comfortable HR sensor : Most Garmins now have the new "sharp" disk-shaped HR sensor from Elevate gen 4 and 5. I cannot wear this more than a few hours before having pain on my wrist and a ring-shaped mark. And no, it's not too tight. Garmins with "dome" shaped sensors were always fine, and Apple Watches too. Here the HR sensor and the whole watch feel super comfortable and I can wear it all day and night without problems.

- MIP Screen ! Oh I hate it so much that most Garmins now have AMOLED. This one is debatable, but I just cannot stand having a tiny screen on my wrist (main reason I ditched the Apple Watch). Quality and contrast are super good. Yeah it's dim, so what ; it's an MIP, so that's also the point.

- Phone App ! It is great, much better and clearer than the Garmin one. ( Why can't Coros actually put as much effort into the Watch firmware ?? ( See CONS ) )

- Weather ! Of, Garmin on-watch weather is, at least here where I live, ALWAYS so wrong. Coros using Apple Weather for data make it much more accurate.

- Price ! Yeah, of course, less than half the price of a Fenix 8 solar (even discounted because of the Fenix 9 release ) is not negligible.

CONS [ All software elements that could easily be fixed and that would make this watch "perfect" in my opinion ]:

- The On-Watch Stress graph. Why on earth does it look like that ? No axis, just floating bars. It's hideous and COULD be better, like the HR graph ( or actually any other on-watch graph that actually looks good ). This is just bad for no reason.

- Only having a weekly bar-graph and no daily graph for steps count and calories burned makes no sense. The watch is capable of showing great daily graphs ( again, like the HR one ) so why not provide the most essential one here ?

- Better night / focus modes. The fact that we cannot configure night/sleep mode drives me crazy. I hate having auto-lock ON on the watch, but the rotating dial just always turns by itself at night and messes with the watch. It would be so simple just to have the option to configure sleep mode to have either touchscreen on or off, dial on or off, etc. So to wear this watch at night without messing with everything, I have to put it in sleep mode ( to reduce brightness and stop notifications ), manually disable touch, and manually enable auto-lock. That's nonsense.

- Let us choose the screen (backlight) brightness ! The flashlight widget lets us change it IN the widget, so it IS possible. Why on earth is such a BASIC setting not available ? Come on COROS!

- Notifications management could be better. Like regrouping them by app / categories, you know, like on any other watch that has phone notifications...

- The "Daily Activity" widget show 4 data : Steps, Calories, Activity Minutes, and Floors Climbed. Yet, when we select it, we see graphs (the same one that would highly benefit having a daily view and not only a week view) for all 4 ... Except for Floor Climbed. ( So 4 data points --> 3 Data points, not logical )

- Control center feels very unfinished. Why have a circular menu like this, with a big empty spot in the center ; with icons no-one can know what they do until we try pressing them. If only there was room to put a descriptive label ... Oh, wait.

- I [personnally] had a problem the first time I used the watch : Unboxed, updated to latest firmware as soo as possible. And then, screen backlight was always ON. It was either fully activated, but it was unable to go to zero and was always on (but dim) with no settings changed, only update done. Powering the watch off and back on did not solved this, but a complete factory reset did. While doing the fa tory reset I was aiming to put back the watch back in its box, but seeing that the issue was fixed after the reset, I gave it a second chance.

- Screen can auto-lock, but to way to manually lock it. An icon in the Toolbox would solve this easily.

- Screen Unlocking options : it's either off, rotate, or long press. But it does unlock while long-pressing ANY button (not just the digital crown, as the choices would implicitly suggest), which is both a bad idea (more accidental unlock) and not ergonomic at all

All in all, I'm still debating if I keep the watch or not. Even if there are a lot of positives here, the negatives are just driving me crazy (and should not even exist in the first place). Watch physical quality is awesome, but the firmware quality is mediocre and inconsistent. I hope Coros fixes them one day, but I won't hold my breath past my return window anyway.

Note : I did not talk about traning stuff and metrics and a lot of other stuff, which fall in the "It's great/it's OK" category.

So that was just my (long) 2 cents. Like it or not, I'm just dropping it here for reference and for others thinking about getting a Coros Watch.

EDIT : Added some CONs after replying them to u/COROS-Official

Question ❓ Marcar un punto en el mapa y que marque una línea recta para llegar?

Es posible en el Apex 4 marcar un PIN y que el reloj te guíe con una línea recta hacia ese punto? Alguien sabes hacerlo? Gracias por adelantado.

Is around me pins feature broken?

Upvotes

Hi. It's either broken or I am not using it properly. On my Apex 4 I have not been able to get the around me PIN feature to show anything other than the pin of where I started an activity. I could add pins to a route, waypoints, doesn't matter what I added, around me never shows anything other than my start point.

Anyone know how it works?

Thanks

Question ❓ See last 2 PR stat?

Is there a way to see my previous PR? Like I improved my 5k time on a run this morning but I don’t remember my previous time and I’d like to see how much was shaved off in this new PR. My pace 4 only shows current PR, anyway to see or track this?

Looking for Screen Protector Recommendations for the Pace Pro

Hi everyone!

I just ordered a Pace Pro, excited to get this.
I've searched on here, but only found a few passing references.

What is the best/favorite screen protector I can get on Amazon for the Pace Pro?
Pros/Cons of glass vs softer plastic type?

Thanks in advance,

K

Glucose levels support

Hello u/COROS-official!

I have a question on behalf of fellow diabetics. I'm about to buy new watch and Coros is tempting me over Garmin. But since I'm diabetic, I need a support for streaming glucose levels from phone to watch like WearOS or Garmin have.

Is there a chance that you will add a support for https://github.com/nightscoutfoundation/xdrip or https://github.com/pachi81/GlucoDataHandler or any other streaming service?

Cheers!

Hi all, I've loved my Pace 3 since Aug 2024 and after the recent firmware update V3.1808 in end Jul, I've had battery problems (used to be 10% usage daily, now is >20%) and now the digital scroll buttom stopped working and I can't stop my exercise. Does anyone know a quick fix? The warranty expired conveniently 3 weeks ago... I'm a bit annoyed cos I have a race this weekend and i wanna hit my pace goals 🥲

Weather in Fahrenheit on pace 4 watch face?

Picked up a pace 4 for the first time yesterday. I’m not able to get any of the watch faces to display temperature in Fahrenheit. Am I doing something wrong or is this a known quirk?

Question ❓ Any update on offline maps in the phone app?

I'd love to use COROS as my backcountry mapping partner in addition to my watch, but you can't do maps offline on the app. This has been mentioned in past threads, but I don't see anything more recent than about 6 months. Has there been any progress made on using the phone app with no internet connectivity, and downloading map quads? sometimes the bigger screen of a phone is super helpful when navigating, and I'd love to have everything in one app instead of all scattered like I have it now between Gaia, caltopo, and OSM.

Question ❓ Is my watch defective?

First of all this is all the same run. The first and last pic is because it changed half way through me looking at it? I am using the pace 4.

First off it wouldn’t let me end the run for a good 2 ish minutes after I finish and that rlly frustrated me cause I can’t edit it so now my tracking isn’t even accurate. As I was running I could tell the heart rate was not accurate I was at 183 ish for a good bit and then all of the sudden I dropped to 162 at the same pace. After it dropped it didn’t go back up I think it even went down a bit at one point.

While I was trying to end the run it made all those laps instead? Idrk am I doing something wrong? Am I sweating too much to read the heart rate? I’m frustrated and thinking abt returning it and going back to the Garmin.

Question ❓ cotton watch bands

Has anyone seen cotton (or mostly cotton) watch bands that fit Coros--specifically Apex 2?

I love this style but it's only for Apple watches, and the ones that fit Coros are all polyester.

Advice on Apex 4 or Pace 4

Hey there, I’m wanting to make the move from Apple Watch U2 across to Coros. I have a couple marathons booked and an 100km ultra booked. In a year’s time as well I will be doing a 70.3 as I cycle a fair bit as well so I will get the latest Dura when it’s available.

When looking at the Coros lineup it’s a bit confusing which is best suited to Triathlons as well.

Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated please :)

Question ❓ Linking to MapMyRun

Hi all, I have a pace 4 and in order to have my workouts get counted for points towards my health benefits, I need to track them in mapmyfitness/mapmyrun. I know coros doesn't support a direct upload there like it does for strava but im curious if anyone else has needed to do this and found a workaround. Thanks!

First Coros after 2 apple watches in 8 years.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I finally decided to skip the next Apple Watch and try to take running more seriously. I ordered the Satisfy edition through the Coros web and, although it said 2 weeks, I got it in one. Now I will need to get used to the menus and other elements of the app.

Hill Alerts for Cycling (Climb)

Hill alerts (Climb) are now available on your watch for bike activities, showing your climb progress on any major hills along the route you're following.

New Voice Control functions

More can be performed during activities, like adjusting activity alerts, opening navigation, or setting timers (English only, and requires COROS NOMAD, PACE 4, or APEX 4).

And plenty more :

  • Direct Transfer Update: When you are updated to the latest firmware, a new upgrade method will be available for future updates, providing greater update speeds and allowing for app navigation while the update is taking place.

  • Battery usage statistics available on your watch's battery widget.

PACE 4 Climbing Modes --> not released :-(

PACE 4 users can now track their climb activities with Indoor Climb and Bouldering activity modes.

Deviate alert Pace pro

To answer your question, yes, the deviation alert does not vibrate when going off route. It will only beep.

This is the answer I got from Coros.

I was under the impression that this comes standard with the Pace pro. On my first Apex 46mm it did vibrate in this mode so it seems strange to me that this one doesn't.

NOMAD or PACE Pro for hiking + bikepacking? MIP map readability question

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi all, I already own a DURA and the COROS HR Monitor, so I'm staying in the ecosystem. I'm choosing between the NOMAD (369€) and the PACE Pro (349€) and I'd love input from people who actually use them.

My use: multi-hour hikes (last one was 6h in the Italian Alps), bikepacking, and I'd like to start running. The reason I want a watch is practical: on the trail I currently carry phone + Insta360 GO 3S + DURA in my pockets, and pulling the DURA out to check the map every time doesn't work. I tried a shoulder-strap mount and nearly dropped it.

Maps are the whole point of the purchase, so my main doubt is the display:

  1. **Is 260x260 MIP enough for reading maps comfortably?** The PACE Pro's 416x416 AMOLED is sharper on paper. For those who've used both how much does it actually matter when navigating?

  2. **Always-on MIP vs AMOLED in practice** is glancing at the map without raising your wrist as useful as it sounds, especially with trekking poles or gloves?

  3. **PACE Pro longevity** it's from Oct 2024 and the US price already dropped to $299. Any concern about how long it'll keep getting updates compared to the NOMAD?

Weight isn't a factor for me, I've tested wearing a heavy watch 24/7 and adapted fine. Any regrets with either one? Thanks!

Question ❓ Are Event watchfaces a partnership?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Some of the best Coros watchfaces are for events. I’m wearing the Lima Half Marathon lately. Are these event watchfaces created officially in partnership with the event, or just a nice way to commemorate an event, or what?
