A strange man coming into my house
Hi there!
I wanted to get in touch about something really strange. First, a little background: I’m a 22-year-old woman who finds it difficult to set boundaries with people who cross them.
Two weeks ago, I moved into a lovely new apartment. According to the lease, there should be four sets of keys, but I was only given two, one of which was incomplete. The landlord mentioned in passing that she has given a key to a trusted person in case of an emergency (she lives far away). I’m not a fan of the idea because that person may be her trusted person, but not mine.
I was at home tonight. I forgot to lock the top latch, so people in the building could open the door from the hallway. I was relaxing when I heard a soft knock on the door. I barely had time to react — I hate answering the door — when I heard some fumbling and the door opened. I was shocked and didn’t know what to say, but I reacted with surprise.
Leaning towards the hallway, I saw an old man continuing to walk into my apartment, despite my obvious lack of welcome (yelling, etc.). I said to him, “What the hell? Don't come in — are you crazy or something?' Even when he saw that I wasn't dressed properly, he didn't back down or look away.
The man finally explained that he was the landlord's handyman and had come to check if the tap was leaking.
I asked him, 'But what would you have done if I hadn't been there? Would you have broken into my apartment anyway?” He said, 'Of course not,' but when he came in, I hadn't made my presence known yet.
I asked him if he had the keys and he said no, but a few hours later I realised that he couldn't have got into the building because there's no doorbell or anything to open the door downstairs.
I don’t know how he got in, and I’m pretty sure I heard him trying to put the keys in the lock. It’s freaking me out. He said he came to check on a leak that the landlord never mentioned to me, even though she recently told me that she just needed to adjust the shutters. The so-called repairman told me that the landlord hadn't given him my contact details; otherwise, he would have called me. I think that’s strange.
The worst part is that I felt like a total jerk, so I ended up acting all friendly and apologetic, as if I’d been in the wrong for reacting that way. He just checked the sink and then left. I don’t feel safe, and I have a feeling he’ll be back any minute.
Should I call the landlord to confirm her side of the story?
