Ask Here First: Troubleshooting, Price/ID/Spec Check, Help, Etc. (June 2026)

The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.

Does your post or question consist of the following, but no limited to:

  • ID Check for a CRT TV/Monitor you've stumbled upon?
  • Price Check for a CRT you've stumbled upon?
  • Asking about benefits of 1 CRT over another that you're looking into?
  • Scaler, convertor, cable choice, or wiring help for your setup?
  • Simple TV remote control questions having to do with setup or purchase?
  • A question you think should have an obvious/well known answer?
  • Or maybe one that feels rather specific and you're worried might get passed over entirely?

This Thread is for you!

Experienced members of the subreddit check in on this post often and will attempt to answer questions as they come up. It would be much appreciated if once you've posted your question here, you use the link above to the older threads to see if the question may have already been answered. Of course, it would also help greatly to search/Ctrl+F the current thread first before submitting your own question too.

This specific thread is set to a Newest First suggested sort, so you shouldn't have to worry about your brand new question being buried instantly under the previous week's worth of questions.

šŸ‘‰ Please do not use any special formatting in your post beyond creating a link if necessary.

I've been prepping my video game collection for a private sale and was testing out my equipment when I came across my old GXTV high in the rafters. I'll take some better photos tonight, but was so excited to get it set up that I thought "mood be damned".

Had one growing up, but had to trade towards the N64 if I wanted the N64. It was an easy yes after I saw Diddy Kong Racing. Now I got it back. Model 1 this time. We had a model 2 growing up.

The store I went to had a couple of the Collector Edition Toaplan shooters that were reprinted several years ago. They had a loose cartridge of Truxton, This Rebtrobit reprint or whatever they are called was less expensive. Easy choice to grab the one I did.

TV is a FV310.

New Pick-up Just in: The best s-video picture I've ever seen, RCA F27701BK

Picked this up for $80CAD after waiting a long time cause I think someone else had a pickup lined up but took too many weeks to come get it. Pretty high end 90s set with an amplifier and s-video built in. Picture has an extremely slight tilt to it, but it doesnt really bother me much and often the overscan hides it. Otherwise, its the brightest and sharpest crt I've ever owned, much sharper than the JVC AV set I used to own. I can certainly see why this was a highly regarded set, and its also on RCA's best chassis, ctc-169. Rca is probably the most slept on brand, despite literally inventing the crt šŸ˜‚ I still got to try 240p on it, but the rest of my setup is tied down upstairs. Waiting on wii s-video cables!

Picked this up from a guy off of Facebook marketplace for $60 last week.

My OG Xbox stopped working. So I went to my parents house and found my old NES, but couldn’t find the power cable so had to order one online to take the first pic. Now I am compliant with rule 4 of the sub.

I ended up picking up 3 TVs off the side of the road a couple weeks ago when the next city over was doing an organized bulk trash pickup week. But 2 of the 3 I picked up were not working. The one working one is a 13ā€ Sylvania that I am very happy with, but I wanted a bigger set with component inputs and what not. I saw this one on marketplace for $60 and immediately scheduled a meetup with the guy.

This guy also found this TV during the bulk trash pickup week. He said he picked up 11 TVs that week and had to pass up on some because he had no room in his vehicle. He had 7 or 8 of them in his garage when I went to pick this up. He said the smaller sets he’s selling on Ebay but the bigger ones it’s not worth the hassle shipping so he sells them on marketplace local pickup only.

I saw 9 Tvs end up going to the dump on one of the bulk trash pickup days. The one day during that bulk trash pickup week I saw 12 of them on the side of the road. I had a post about the one spot where I found 9 of them. I wish I had saved them all but it does comfort me to know there was at least this one other guy that I know of out there saving these old CRTs.

This thing is great though. Clearly low mileage. Perfect picture and geometry as far as I can tell. I have all picture settings in the middle and it looks great with no adjustments.

Mostly just watching VHS tapes on this. My Ps2 and OG Xbox are both broken at the moment but once I get one or the other working this will be awesome to game on. Unfortunately it doesn’t really have a place in the small apartment, so I’m going to play around with it for another week or so but ultimately I’m going to have to set it up in my parent’s basement, and put the 13ā€ Sylvania in it’s place in my living room until I get a house of my own where I can have a proper retro setup going to display this thing. I really just wanted to pull the trigger on this right now because there were some deals on marketplace with the market being flooded from that bulk pickup day. Normally all that’s on there around me is the delusional people asking $300 for everything.

Repair/Troubleshooting Proposal to mods - pin a warning for red tint on Trinitrons

Over the past few months I've seen numerous posts from people asking for help with their late model Trinitrons with a red tinted image. That problem is a very common failure on late model Trinitrons, where a manufacturing flaw in the gun causes the green cathode to degrade prematurely.

It is UNFIXABLE. Only a new tube / regun will fix that problem, and that's not an option these days. So it's junk.

I was first made aware of this problem a few years ago when I picked up one with no green emission at all, hoping it was just a neckboard problem. It wasn't, my CRT tester confirmed that the green cathode was almost completely dead. It took a rejuvenation, but it only lasted a couple weeks. After that I've seen many posts and discussions in other forums exactly mirroring what my TV looked like.

I think this problem is worth a pinned warning, because the affected TVs are some of the most abundant sets out there right now, and taking one with this fault hoping to fix it is only going to result in needing to pay to dispose of it when it proves unrepairable.

First successful repair, no power no display restored to perfectly functional! I'm pretty stoked to find I can get these TVs running when they're kicked to the curb for trash

It's a Phonola 14" made in Italy, though most of its guts is Philips, year 1989. It has a scart RGB! Got It for 20€. When you turn on the device connected to the scart, the TV automatically switches to the scart channel. It's my first tiny crt, my other one is a 25" Trinitron. Love this little fella!

New Pick-up I got the monitor!

Yesterday I posted asking whether I should get a CRT TV or a CRT monitor, and my dilemma was basically:

TV: bigger screen + more authentic retro gaming vibes, but I’d have to buy a console.

Monitor: smaller screen + higher resolution, but I could use it with the PC I already game on.

Sooo... I ended up getting the monitor!

The main reason is that CRT monitors are really hard to find in my city. CRT TVs are pretty common, but monitors are extremely rare. I’d been looking for one for months, and this was literally the only one I found, so I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity.

And the best part: I paid 100 BRL (about $20 USD) for it.

So yeah, I think I got pretty lucky lol.

New Pick-up NEC MultiSync II (JC-1402HME)

Picked this one up yesterday.

I had a Commodore 1942 previously but that was a Bi-Sync monitor that only accepted RGBHV.
So I’ve been on the lookout for a true MultiSync that accepts RGBHV as well as RGsB and RGBS.

I’m really enjoying the monitor but I have to manually adjust the positioning (width, height, …) with every Scan frequency and Resolution, sadly.

Enjoy

Envision EN-710e. From 2001. Awesome to be able to contribute to the CRT Database with this one as theres not much documentation. Was going to adjust the blue convergence but decided to leave it be.

Fixed the signal issue by dropping the output to 800x600 @ 60Hz. So glad the monitor itself was completely fine!
