Cryptid Of The Month Cryptid of the Month, August, the Ozark Howler! Everything there is to know about the Ozark Howler.

Hello Cryptid Hunters!

This will be the seventeenth installment of Cryptid of the Month where I will be covering EVERYTHING, and I do mean EVERYTHING regarding a specific Cryptid, mostly more obscure cryptids but there might be some exceptions to that rule. You can find the last 16 installments just by clicking on the Cryptid of the Month flair tagged to this post! This month will be about the Ozark Howler from the Ozark region of the U.S.

The Ozark Howler has been one of my personal favorites for a while. Its description has been reported differently by many people but there are some features that are consistent across all reports: a large, stocky animal with shaggy black fur, horns on its head, and a howl that chills the blood. Some reports even give it the standard glowing red eyes a lot of Cryptids get while others don’t. It’s reported to be bear-sized, though that leaves a large range of sizes. Some have it being about black bear size, others have it grizzly size; standing at 4 feet on all fours, and up to 9 feet tall when standing on its hind legs. Some reports claim it looks more like a big cat while others claim it looks like a bear. It’s usually described as a quadruped but if the bear like description is to be believed then it would be capable of standing on its hind legs as well. Due to these varying descriptions, the Howler is often depicted as a chimera hybrid of both a big cat and a bear with horns on its head

The first reported encounter with the Ozark Howler was supposedly by Daniel Boone. Daniel Boone is credited with having shot and killed a large, shaggy furred, horned predatory creature near Cuba MO, barely within the Ozark region. This encounter is considered suspect though given that we have no proof that Daniel Boone ever documented this or if this is a tall tale posthumously added to his legacy.
Other early accounts come from trappers, hunters, farmers, and moonshiners reporting being attacked or scared off by this beast.
To this day some Ozarkians claim to have had their own encounters or know someone who has had an encounter with the Ozark Howler.

There are a lot of theories about what the Ozark Howler and what it could be. I will start with my favorite and move towards what I think is really the case:

**Theory 1**
The Ozark Howler is a real animal. Some posit that the Ozark Howler is an undiscovered species of bear or possibly big cat. People say that the Ozarks are incredibly tough terrain to navigate. Therefore it would not be too far fetched to imagine some sort of undocumented creature could live in the Ozarks. This theory is, unfortunately, unlikely. Although much of the Ozarks are unexplored we can tell through science that an animal like this would have to be an evolutionary fluke. The Ozarks Howler is describes as having horns like a goat. A predator having horns is highly unlikely to begin with, but especially defensive horns like what the Howler is described as having. Goat horns are to protect their heads from attackers and for social hierarchy with other goats. It would be strange for a large predatory animal to develop similar horn like structures. No other predatory megafauna has horns as they interfere with most hunting or foraging that a big cat or bear like animal would be doing. I can’t say that megafauna having horns in modern day is *impossible*, as an argument could be made for thermoregulation, but I can say it’s very improbable.

**Theory 2**
The Ozark Howler is a cover for Moonshiners. Some think that the Howler was made by Moonshiners to deter people from going too far into the forests of the Ozarks. It makes a lot of sense; if you don’t want people coming back to your hidden still, make up a monster that roams the woods so people stay away. Moonshiners would be familiar with forest sounds and use that to their advantage. They would know the strange scream/howl noises that a plethora of animals, such as owls, foxes, coyotes, or mountain lions, can make. And they would know that if they describe these noises coming from a ferocious, red eyed, horned beast that people would stay away due to fear. They could continue distilling fear free of the noises of the forest and trusting that anyone else would stay away.

**Theory 3**
The Ozark Howler is a hoax fabricated in the 90’s. This theory actually comes from Loren Coleman himself, and is held by many to be a fact and not a theory at all. Coleman states that he had tracked a hoaxer back to an internet troll sometime in the late 90’s and later published his findings. He uses his investigatory notes as proof for this finding as well as an old URL associated with Memphis Atheists as part of the hoaxers activity. Coleman says that this internet troll created the Ozark Howler to confuse and mess with cryptozoologists and admitted to being the creator of the Howler. Coleman is a well trusted figure in cryptozoology and has given no reason in the past to distrust such claims. It is worth noting, however, that proof of these claims are still debated. Coleman does not provide any proof of the original posts other than the old URL mentioned before. There is no archived copies of any of the hoaxers activity. Coleman also never publicly outed the hoaxer which some have said is suspect given that the best way to stop a hoax is to point out the hoaxer themselves. Furthermore, there are no third-party documentations or reports of Coleman’s investigation or the confession of an unnamed hoaxer. Again, this is not to say that I don’t believe Coleman, or that people shouldn’t believe him, I personally think this is the case, I just also believe in laying out all the facts for people to make their own judgments.

**Theory 4**
The Ozark Howler is a misidentification. It could be that the Ozark Howler is just a black bear or some other such creature that someone misidentified. Maybe it had a branch stuck to the fur on its head that was mistaken for horns. In stressful situations humans tend to exaggerate the details. So perhaps the Ozark Howler was just a black bear that scared someone and got monstrous details added to its appearance from the frightened witness.

In the end, whether the Ozark Howler is a hoax, a misidentification, or an undiscovered species, it’s safe to say it’s a beloved piece of Ozark lore. Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed this months Cryptid of the Month. My research is not perfect so if there are any mistakes or falsities please let me know.

Until next time, **Happy Cryptid Hunting**

Theory Mysterious island appeared then disappeared, could it be a Aspidochelone?

A island near Canada appeared then disappeared within two weeks. This made me think of the Aspidochelone. The Aspidochelone is described to be a giant turtle that had an island on its shell. In folklore sailors would think it's a normal island and would go on it. Only to be knocked into the water and consumed. So is this a Aspidochelone in the modern day? Who knows but it's interesting to theorize.

Question Anybody heard this story? Little girl goes missing in Australia and is lead home by a bigfoot

Back in the late 2010s I took a trip to Tokyo. I met a guy from Australia at the hostel I was staying at. We were both outside smoking a cigarette one afternoon and started talking. I don’t remember how this topic came about, but he wound up telling me about a story from Australia. Unfortunately I can’t remember the specific area where this supposedly happened or when.

But he told me that a young girl had gone missing, presumably somewhere in the wild/outdoors. She was gone for some time. I believe it was multiple days. Eventually she wound up wandering back into the town she was from (I imagine it must have been a remote area?). When she was found, she claimed that a giant man who was covered in red hair all over his body had led her to safety. He told me that after returning home, she had been questioned by government officials about her experience multiple times. These are all the details that I can remember.

I still think about this from time to time and I was just curious if anyone else has ever heard this story and may have any further details. Thank you.

Discussion Cryptid Hunting Game

Currently realizing my dream video game where you hunt a random cryptid and find ways to either trap/kill it by researching the appropriate way to do so in the late 90's.

Gameplay loop will be to investigate clues at an incident location to figure out WHAT cryptid it could be, then research in-game as to WHERE that cryptid is typically spotted, and then prepare the appropriate baits & traps in order to capture or kill the entity. In that order.

My intention is to release a DEMO featuring 3 cryptids. I'd also like to mention that this will be CO-OP, so that you can play in groups of 4(TBD) with friends.

I come to this reddit asking you all: **What 3 Cryptids should be in the DEMO?**

Originally I wanted to have Bigfoot, Skinwalkers, and Grey Aliens as the first big 3, but I realized that people wouldn't find those that interesting since they're so mainstream. Now the current 3 contenders are Hidebehinds, the Snallygaster, and the Flatwoods Monster.

What cryptids would entice YOU to want to try out the demo?

Discussion Things seen and heard, many moons ago

So many years ago, maybe around 2009, me and my buddy walked to the end of his driveway to smoke around 12 at night. Anyways, when we got to the top of his drive way we both noticed something huge and skinny walk across the street. When I say huge, I mean big enough to only take maybe three steps and completely clear the road and another maybe two steps to make it into the wood line. Once it was out of sight, we heard a horrific high pitched scream that would absolutely make your skin crawl. We never heard nor seen anything else again and to this day I still hunt those woods yet, I have always had a feeling like whatever it was is still there but hasn't made itself noticed. To give further context to where this was, I grew up about 45 minutes outside of Atlanta and we have a pretty good size lake that he lived lake front on and I lived about a mile away. While there are houses and a few neighborhoods, it is mostly thick woods and tall hills that separated all of us. We were both always adamant that what we saw that night was Bigfoot, however the more I get into wanting to know more and learning more about cryptids, the more I believe that it was in fact not a Bigfoot. It was way too skinny and the pitch of its voice was too high. Just wanted to get some thoughts and opinions of what it may have been and know if anyone else has had similar experiences in or around the southeast

Sighting / Encounter Florida Dogman? or something else?

Not my story, but from my best friend and my sister. This happened when we were in high school, so at the time my best friend, who we’ll call L was 17 and my sister, who we’ll call E, was 15. We grew up in a small town in Northwest Florida, only a couple of hours away from Alabama, so it was very heavily wooded. It was around 8pm and my friend and sister were picking up food for us while I was finishing up some homework at my house.
To avoid any traffic on the main road, L decided to turn down a back road with no street lights that avoided the busy part of town, one she’d taken hundreds of times. They had only been on this back road for a couple minutes when they went around a bend and came to a dead stop. In the middle of the road, facing the car was a 6-7 ft long creature. In the headlights they could see it was black and canine-like with glowing read eyes. E said it was really skinny and on all fours, but in a way it looked like it could walk on 2 legs. It didn’t do anything, just stared at the car and breathed. They sat there for a couple minutes until L put the car in reverse and Tow-Matered it all the way back to the main road.

None of us had seen anything like that before or since and we haven’t been able to identify it either. Way too big to be a dog and its features weren’t that of a panther either. I’ve always been into cryptids but the closest thing I can find is the Dogman, which both L and E say isn’t what they saw. Anyway we still talk about it almost 10 years later, so if anyone has any idea what it is please comment!

Sighting / Encounter Has anyone ever seen the sky ray

So my sister came to me the other day, and we were talking. And she mentioned, she saw a large winged creature it was very dark in color did not have feathers. She said she could not even make out a head, but she said it did have a tail.

This happened.

The night of the partial eclipse.

She drew me a picture. She said it looked like a stingray.

I have seen some stuff throughout my life. But I must say I was kind of jealous when she told me what she saw.

So I was curious if anybody has ever seen this creature or know anything about it?

By the way both my sister and I live in Richmond va

Sighting / Encounter Cryptid encounter or big dog

My sister (19) and her husband (19) live on a military base in California, recently they got a new dog (Great Pyrenees), adopted from a kill shelter. His story followed abusive homes and eventually was found chained to a guardrail on a road. They also have another dog, small bulldog. They didn’t know how’d they would interact so they have a gate blocking them in an open part of the kitchen and one of them separating. The GP (Great Pyrenees) for reference was skinny, had a lot of fleas and were all removed, still skinny but he can move. He sleeps a lot but last night an occurrence that left my sister crying on call all night. It was late at night, probably 11:00-2:00AM, she walked to the kitchen, standing there she watched him slowly go up on his hind legs, humanly walk towards the gate, hover his paw over the gate button, and it opened. (Chills) She then screamed waking her husband. She told him the story scaring them both. They then closed the gate, kicking, pushing, even going at the button, the gate was extremely hard to open, my sister even struggled sometimes. I’ve always believed in skinwalkers so I of course started to stress, I believe it had to be related to the tying to the guard rail all of those nights. He’s fine as of this morning but I don’t know what he will do in the night, I encouraged her to get a camera and record everytime she went in the kitchen but her husband has 24 hr duty, so she will have no car.

Any ideas?

Sighting / Encounter Does anyone know what kind of creature I could have seen?

So one night while I was walking outside, I had my earbuds in when I heard a noise and the backlight ahead of me was triggered on. I then saw something large and white-looking rushing down the path that led down to our orchard. It stopped running a few meters down and I froze before trying to take out a flashlight... I could hear it start calmly walking away but I couldn't spot it again even with the light. Its steps faded and I wasn’t sure where it had gone, since the only direction it could have gone was the fence with a railroad on the other side and the orchard with fencing all around it, and I didn’t hear it jump. When I first saw it, it was mostly a blur, and didn't see its head or tail, whatever it was. Just a long white-looking body, smooth and low to the ground despite how massive it seemed compared to me. I went back inside and came out with my mom and brother to look with our dog. We had flashlights but didn’t dare go down to the orchard itself, but our dog made some really weird noises she’s never done before like she was scared of something. We never found it or heard it again, I’m probably gonna try to draw it, but without having seen a tail or head I wouldn’t have much to go off of.

(Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, I do not have much experience with Reddit and it felt too different from anything I’ve seen in our area to be just a deer or cougar, so I thought it’d be neat to speculate.)

Sighting / Encounter Tsul Kalu (Cherokee Legend)

I'm in the northern part of Colorado in the Rockies. I am a second generation Cherokee Native as well. Although Colorado is not the native land of the Cherokee, I experienced an event which I relate to the Cherokee legend Tsul Kalu. Tsul Kalu was the name for a race of giant beings with slanted eyes. The wild ones!

This event happened in a cabin that I was living in up a canyon called Rist Canyon. When I was about 26, I moved into an old log cabin miles from any neighbors. I did this as my right of passage for myself. I had no running water, no TV reception, but I did have a phone and some radio reception and electricity. At that time I was wanting to go to school to learn a trade in video production. So I brought up video and audio equipment to practice with and learn about while up there. It was also at this time I was trying to raise Alaskan Malamutes and had two very protective large dogs. Malamutes have a certain bark when they hear a person and a different type bark when an animal is around. I always knew what to expect by the way they barked.

One night I was listening to music on a reel to reel 4 track that I had, and also used it to record sounds in nature on the mountain. My dogs were in the cabin with me at the time. Gradually I kept hearing a screeching howling sound in the distance. I thought it was on the tape so I stopped the music to test it. It became much louder then and more distinct. My dogs had their ears perked up and following the sound. I stepped outside for a better perception of what it was. It was coming from a ridge behind me that lead into a large mountain. I knew the animal sounds up there and this was something I had never heard before. What ever it was, was coming my way down the ridge. This had me worried so I called for my dogs because they would attack any animal that came onto the property. (Except this time). I had to drag them out of the cabin and keep them with me. They wanted nothing to do with the sound. They would bark as if an animal were near, then they would bark as if a person was around. That had me concerned enough that I decided to call the Sheriff's Department. I explained what I was hearing and the way my dogs were acting, they said they would send somebody right up. I figured while I was waiting I would get the dogs in the pickup and use the lights to scan around the area near the ridge. My dogs owned that pickup and any time I got near it they would be jumping in the back waiting to go. This time I had to drag them out of the cabin and lift them into the back of the pickup to get them to go. I looked around but saw nothing and then noticed headlights coming up the canyon so I figured it was the Sheriff's Department. The sound was still happening and getting closer as I went to the road to meet who ever they sent.

The person they sent was a very small woman to small to be sending up alone. I told her I was the one who called and if she would shut off her car she would hear the sound. She heard the sound and said I am not getting out of this car till I get some backup up here. She called for backup and we waited. By the time the other person showed up, the sound was gone. About a year later I had moved back down and was going to school living with some room mates. One day they were listening to the TV and I was in my bedroom doing something. Suddenly I heard that same sound coming out of the TV. I rushed in and asked them what they were watching. It was a documentary on Bigfoot and the sound was suppose to be the closest to what science thought was the sound of a Bigfoot.

I put together a video as a testimonial in better detail along with that sound and photographs of the area if anyone is interested in watching it. This is the link. https://rumble.com/v75vm7o-tsul-kalu-cherokee-legend.htm

Has anyone heard of these cryptids?

They differ from Bigfoot in that they are more apelike. Some the size of chimpanzees and gorillas have been spotted. They have been seen mostly in the Southeastern and Midwestern US.

Does anyone here know of any sightings?

Does anyone know of some good scary cryptid/humanoid stories set in or around the rockies? Taking a trip there in a couple weeks, in the mood XD. Preferably things more unique/original than the usual batch of Werewolf, Sasquatch, and Wendigo stories.

Discussion What’s the most terrifying obscure cryptid, monster, folklore creature, or real incident that deserves more horror stories?

I’m a horror writer looking for lesser-known material to inspire future stories. I’m especially interested in cryptids, local monsters, folklore entities, haunted places, strange historical incidents, or urban legends that are genuinely unsettling but not already overused in horror.

What is one obscure creature, myth, or incident that most people don’t know about—but could make an incredible horror story?

Please share its name, where it comes from, the basic legend or history, and the detail that makes it especially frightening.

Discussion When did Giant Bigfoot trend started? (I couldn't find a better video)

Thumbnail youtube.com
2 Upvotes

Like Seen people talking about Ape man being Giants and such but never really could put a point on where it's started I know Bigfootization (yes that what I call it when a Creature that wasn't related to apes suddenly even if just a brief period has been Depicted as an Ape-man like for example Wendigo and Chupacabra which started around The 60ths and occasionally happens accidentally or otherwise to Creatures like Mothman who is sometimes described as Quote "Winged Bigfoot")

So do you guys know when exactly this started and when maybe the Afghan Giant Incident started it? But unsure of it
