Discussion Public chat logs
Just found out about this. Apparently they’re also storing IPs etc on these 3rd party websites. Is it possible to remove your profile somehow? Surely Valve needs to do something about this? Insane that this is even possible

i don't think they have acess to the players ip adresses.
They just parse the demo files that are publicly accessible. They contain allchat. If messed around with demos a bunch and I haven't found any ip adresses in there and i also can't think of any reason why they should contain ip adresses
This is all not new and has been a thing for a long long time.
If you don't other people to read your public chats, then don't publicly chat.

Just read somewhere that they’re storing location trackers or something, not sure what they were implying. Maybe it’s server information and not your actual IP ofc. If it’s been a thing for a long time, and these sites have existed for a while now what prevented them to put out the chat logs earlier?

They are recording your ping to different server locations and can estimate a rough area using tri- multilateration. Depending on how stable your ping is, this can get quite accurate, but nowhere near finding your ip address

Lack of interest, or skills. Have you never loaded a demo file before? It has allways been a thing that you could see the chat. You could even see the chat only ment for CT/T in the server demo afterwards.1

Yes, I’ve loaded a demo before. But I wasn’t aware that literally anyone can just scrape thousands of demos of any player and extract their chat logs.

You could always do that. That's how services like csstats or leetify work.
The demo files reside on the match replay servers for a while. Idk exactly how long they are there but I believe it's around a week before they get deleted.
Once they are on there anybody with a match link can just download them. There is tools to automatically pull data from the demo files.

Leetify has shown that they see your chat messages for years, they just don’t attach it publicly to your profile. Even in their year end review they show that they read and store all of your messages.

You cant just scrape something you dont have access to. You dont have access to anyones demos, unless that someone gives you its access token (or whatever valve calls this token) for the demos. U cant just ask valve for all demos of player XX without XXs token.
So obviously for these sites to work, first players need to add their tokens to the sites and then it will slowly grow.
But these days we have ton of these sites, so i suppose its also possible that if you create a new site, you can first also scrape those sites for demos so your site is not empty when first players will start using it. Eg when you go to csstatsgg, all matches, you see some cs2/faceit matches and when you click them, theres also watch demo/match room button.0

thats the cs2 community for you, someone always finds a way to scrape data they shouldnt. valve's probably not gonna do much unless enough people make noise about it

Dota has chat info public for 3rd party sites since 2011, they are not gonna give a fuck about someone scraping demo data for chat history

I see 0 benefits in exposing people’s chat logs and other unnecessary data like server ips. I understand if they want to show player stats but why tf would they show chats?
Valve should restrict their API or whatever is allowing this asap

Maybe people will stop being racist when consequences start coming their way because of some chat logs.

Hilarious how much people are panicking over this. Suddenly dropping 19 slurs every game doesn’t seem like such a good idea.

Chat logs thing is who cares, just stop being an ass. The fact that you guys care more about that than the triangulation tool is wild.

It has been possible for over a decade including in Dota 2, it only just recently viral, also valve is the one that is doing this not these websites lol, these websites just scrape the logs from every public match replays on the game which contains chats typed in "All chat", 3rd party's can't see "team" chat since those aren't viewable in replays
Also i assume you have one too many "heated gaming moments" in "all chat" OP?

3rd party sites are putting the logs out there, not Valve. Valve is just allowing this to happen. To answer your question, my logs aren’t that bad. This is not only about chat logs, I just don’t want 3rd party sites to scrape (any) data from my account. It’s a privacy issue.

u/Nereo5 21h ago
You dont understand. The chat logs have allways been out there. By Valve. Since the dawn of CS.

u/Fine-Age1912 21h ago
I do understand. Lmao. The earlier comment said ”valve is the one doing this not these websites”. While Valve is allowing us to get access chat logs, it’s the 3rd party websites that are actually taking advantage of this and publicly showing them.

Game demos have always included game chat, someone just finally started scraping literally all of them from the past few months for the chat data. It’s pretty scummy imo, it’s obvious clickbait to drive engagement to their services.

how is there no logs of some of the streamers and pro players?
1
u/youngstar- 19h ago
Faceit restrict API access to their demos. Thats the reason Leetify can’t parse them automatically anymore.
So you can still get their logs but it will be a manual effort.

im talking about regular mm/prem and there are people with no stats at all, including these chat logs

I ain't got nothing to hide. I call out blatant cheaters and the people quing with them. I don't take back anything I may have said about them.

u/thiagohds 18h ago
I dont think they can get your ip. And for the messages you are talking in a public enviroment. Zero problem for them to get that data. Its part of the demo.

I mean for a company who refuses to implement kernel level AC due to “privacy” and “security” this is pretty fuckin’ hilarious. Their reputation gets worse as time goes on.

u/Warty_Member_1203 17h ago
Let’s be real for a second dude, FaceIt having a separate kernel level anticheat is probably the single largest source of problems that Steam Support has to deal with. Look at a Steam Support or malware subreddit for a day. The anticheat itself, no, but all of the scamming and malware surrounding it.

It's crazy how paranoid people are about chat logs and an IP address, you realize every website ever knows your IP address right?

u/Skahazadhan 21h ago
regardless how you feel about all chat being in demos it's weird how people are handwaving the whole thing saying "it's always been public" as if the ease of access makes no difference

Im just glad that the site didnt get logs from my unhinged chat days, the oldest chat log is 3-4 months old and thankfully i didnt go crazy the last few months
