Career switching Anyone else burning out of software development?
TLDR: I’m so sick of AI software development, and AI in general. Not sure if I want to do this anymore. Anyone else?
I’ve been working as a Software Engineer for about 5 years now. I started just before Chat GPT arrived so I have seen the field change a lot over the last 5 years. Up until earlier this year I was AI pilled. I started using Chat GPT as soon as it was public and immediately experimented with automations. Built several apps and tools just to find out that someone already made the exact same sloppy software. Claude code came out and I was blown away. Production was through the roof! But the same problem kept coming up. Every time I made something new using AI, other people had already made the same sloppy thing. So at some point I realized we cant/shouldn’t use AI to innovate in software. Just the same as we cant/shouldn’t use AI to engage in natively creative tasks.
So this brings me to my next point. Companies and everyone else in the damn industry don’t see AI this way. AI is something to rely on; something we should have more and more of until it can do everything. And this just wears me out. At this point I’ve completely lost the plot and I just can’t keep up. I don’t see the point of it all. My company is forcing us down this platform they created which has all these automations and loops and chron jobs, and I can’t fathom why we’re relying on AI so heavily rather than encouraging good engineering. The slop will compound and compound until good engineers (if there are any left) come through and rid of it.
Maybe I’m alone in this opinion but I don’t know if I can take this anymore. Software engineering (and engineering as a whole) has lost its spark for me. I don’t want to keep up with all this AI crap. I’m thinking about changing careers or going the entrepreneurial route but I’m intimidated by these ideas. My degree is in CS so I’d have to find new interests and build brand new skills. I wish I could have the CS I fell in love with back.
Rant over. Anyone else feel the same? If so, what career changes have you considered?
