After 100 days of GS, my baby boy recovered against all odds. When the incontinence problems was at its worst, we desperately tried to find cases on Reddit, vet-sites and Facebook where the issue got resolved, and got defeated quite quickly. So this post is for the people who are in the situation I was in, just looking for hope and tips. Here it goes!
The issues started when my husband and I came home from the hospital after I delivered our baby in march. Our cat stayed with our neighbour (he has stayed there before and our neighbour is a great cat sitter), who told us that our cat had been a bit off, and refused to eat. We gave it a couple of days, he seemed extremely tired, sneezed a lot, had runny eyes and refused to eat. So we took him to the vet.
This is followed by multiple vet visits where he was misdiagnosed (my husband and I actually suspected FIP, but a vet at one of the hospitals in town told us that it absolutely wasn't).
After weeks of trying different types of medicines, feeding him with syringes and draining our savings account I finally had enough and took him to an extremely expensive and newly opened hospital for animals. The vet looked at him for about a minute and told me that he was dying, and that he was pretty sure this was FIP.
Dear readers, the absolute will power it took to not burn down the first hospital must be applauded!
Now, he stayed at the hospital for a couple of days, we drained our savings account a little bit more (but drained our insurance company's account even more), and came home with GS medication and cortisone drops for the eyes.
There was no difference the first week, it actually got worse. His back legs became limp and the incontinence started. He would shit himself everywhere, fall in it, sit in it - he didn't realize what was happening. But the worst was the peeing. He wouldn't drain his bladder when he was peeing, instead it was just dripping everywhere at all times. We had to throw away all of our carpets and some furniture, it was just torture. What made it worse is that we had to shower him every day (:traumatize him every day) because of this. It was hell on earth. On top of that: a brand new baby at home!
It didn't get better when I showed up to the scheduled check-up, he was a bit more alert and the blood results showed that the medication was working - but the neurological damage was done. I told the vet about the problems, and she responded: "You probably already know that these problems probably won't get resolved, and this life if not fair for you or the cat. You've done a lot already. I just want you to know that it wouldn't be wrong to give up now.".
I BURST into tears and told the vet that I couldn't do it that day, but that my husband and I wouldn't be able to schedule the appointment she was referring to. She told me that we could give it another two weeks and schedule the appointment then, if it didn't get better by then it probably never would.
I got home, and when I locked up my front door I realized that the next time I'd get home from the vet, the carrier would be empty. So I broke down in my hallway and my husband ran up to me with the baby and broke down next to me.
This was followed by us crying at all hours, every day. Crying at work, cryin at home, crying at the grocery store, none of us has ever cried this much. My husband took the first 6 months of parental leave and called me crying asking me to get home when our cat was cuddling up to him. We just couldn't accept that he was getting better, but it was too late. That if he hadn't been misdiagnosed he would be fine.
After a crying match my husband ordered 4 litter boxes that was easier to get into as the cat was limp and all. I suggested that we should fill them up and place them all over the flat to see if it would help. After about a month of incontinence, a week before the appointment, he started to use them! He would still pee himself sometimes, but not as much as before. When he saw the litter boxes everywhere it was as if he thought "might as well" and took a dump. We cancelled the appointment and took away one litter box at a time.
The vets called it a miracle! He's permanently partly blind, but my god, he's alive and well! Cuddly and playful, and he absolutely adores the baby/his little brother.
If you are in the same situation we were in, don't give up! Get more litter boxes!!!
