1.5+ YOE Java developer considering cybersecurity as a career switch — is it worth it?

I’m currently working as an SDE at an MNC with around 1.5+ years of experience, primarily working with Java/backend development and AWS.

I graduated in 2025.
Recently, I’ve been thinking seriously about whether I should continue down the traditional backend/SDE path or move towards cybersecurity, particularly areas like:

Cloud Security
Application Security
IAM / Identity Security
DevSecOps
AWS Security
Kubernetes/Container Security

The reason I’m considering the switch is that generic software development seems to be getting increasingly competitive, and AI is also making a lot of routine development work easier to automate. I’m wondering whether specializing in security could provide a better long-term career moat.

At the same time, I don’t want to switch just because cybersecurity sounds safer. I know I’d probably have to start somewhat lower than someone with equivalent years of cybersecurity experience.
For people already working in cybersecurity:

Is cybersecurity actually a good career to enter in 2026, especially in India?

How difficult is it to transition from Java/backend + AWS → Cloud/AppSec/IAM?

If you’re worried about a field being too competitive then cybersecurity is 100% the worst field to pick. It’s massively oversaturated right now. Very hard for people early in their careers to get jobs because they are competing against hundreds or even thousands of candidates.

My analysis might be wrong but In linked in i have seen every software dev jobs being 100+ in just few minutes where as it takes 10+ hours for Cyber Security to get same amount of response .

If your goal is to move from one field that is oversaturated to another field that is oversaturated, go for it. I mean do whatever you want with your life. I'm just telling you what its like in our field.

it might be easier for you to switch rather than typical soc/pentest roles, and even from future growth perspective, it ranks much better

I'm in Cybersecurity Domain, Started with SDE and then worked on and have pretty good experience on everything you listed down and even more skills than mentioned. I've 5 YoE. CyberSec is fucked, it's very niche. You can't just say I know this and get a job. Better try to learn application design. Study API designing and architecture rather than blindly checking which domains gets less job applies to switch domains

Sideways is the move here, not a full switch. A backend dev who already knows AWS is most of the way into product security or cloud security, and neither of those makes you restart at analyst pay the way a SOC seat would. The India part is the real constraint, the appsec roles that actually value a developer background sit in product companies more than the big services firms, so aim there.

The India part is the perfect opportunity. All of these companies in the U.S. are just offshoring jobs to India lol.

Is Java developer job is boring? How much demand will Java developers still have by 2030? If a college student wants to start learning now, what skills should they focus on?

I’m willing to learn anything, so I want to choose the skills that will have strong demand and good career opportunities in the future.
