Mark taking the “rolls Royce” out for a Spin

I know I'm being overly nitpicky with this, but something about the constant "taking [woman pro] name for a spin" with Daniella & Adele rubs me the wrong way! I very much know it's not intended to objectify them, but it is just a knee-jerk reaction I have to feel like it's treating them a bit like an object or something to be handled, rather than treating them as an independent dancer in their own right and saying something like "what an honor to dance with an incredible person." Maybe I'm alone in this!

I have to agree and I cringe when women are referred to as fancy cars. I can’t be the only one. Derek, please stop! It’s not the compliment you think it is.

Came here to say this and assumed I’d get killed in the comments.

u/irishhwhiskey 17h ago
me too, because I've never heard them call a male pro a car/animal

Mark called Adele a snake as in she’s quiet than “sneak-attacks” you w a dramatic dance move. That reference I understand!

u/Ok-Cold-3346 14h ago
Yeah, let’s start calling the males names to be fair. Let’s take Derek out for a spin! What kind of car should he be? 🤔

Something eco friendly like a Prius.

He's a pretty slick dancer though. So I think he'd be high-end. I almost am inclined to say a Tesla!

Nooooo a lot of women find it awkward. I love Allen & even a sweetie like him kept calling her the RR! 🙈

Same!! It feels off, and I’m a huge Mark fan. But I don’t know if I would appreciate it as his wife.

I think it also has a subtle connotation that he can do as he wishes with her

I hate the nicknames aswell.

u/Actual_Interview_303 16h ago
I don’t mind nicknames and clearly they’re MEANT to be a compliment… but anything that’s being ridden could maybe be avoided. Women don’t really need that analogy for everyone “riding” them 🫠

I feel as if it’s not fair to the other pros who don’t get fun nicknames. Like Rylee Dani and now Adele all got them, imagine how the rest feel. Maybe it’s just me but I’d feel left out. (Little anti depressant, Ferrari, rolls Royce)

u/Spirited-Classroom68 10h ago
Hey Anti_ depressants are big business. (They don't call it big pharma for nothing.

yeah it’s weird like aren’t they equally dancing with each other? aren’t they both the car in this situation? lol like it’s weird to act like the man has more control over the dance or something. like the girl is just the accessory. and they never say it the other way around it’s never the woman taking the guy “out for a spin.”i understand being a lead vs follow but this phrasing is just weird

Couldn't agree more gives me the ick. Sounds too much like "took her for a ride" which has super sexual connotations.

u/iluvsunni 17h ago
The innuendo is kind of an ick for me. Particularly considering the 16 year age difference with Mark and Adele

Can we stop with the car analogies and “taking for a spin” type talk? So over it with Daniella and now it’s starting with Adele. It’s weird and annoying.

u/ishamiltonamusical 16h ago
Less enthused about the car analogy but oh my goodness Adele can dance. Absolutely amazing and I love how smooth her dancing is.

Agree with the other comments about the wording! Adele’s footwork is INCREDIBLE!!! In this, and her samba with Gleb, it is so fast and precise and beautiful!

u/Lower_Philosopher_71 13h ago
She’s incredible and I’m excited to see her as a pro. When she talked about her scoliosis, wearing the brace 20 hours a day, dancing the 4 hours out of it, I was amazed.
22
u/Odd_Counter_3448 18h ago
Yay! This might even be better than her dances with Gleb.

u/Own-Midnight-5231 17h ago
Mark is just a better Ballroom dancer than Gleb ever was; he sadly stopped way too early to pursue musical theater.

u/Medium-Sir-3312 16h ago
I’m not a big fan of gleb but I disagree. Mark is however a much more talented choreographer.

u/Own-Midnight-5231 15h ago
This is not a preference or stylistic liking. Mark is, through accomplishments a better ballroom (Latin) dancer. Gleb never won the British Open (U-21) or even came near it. Mark just stopped way too soon, while Gleb continued.

u/Odd_Counter_3448 10h ago
Mark, Derek and Julianne all retired too early from competitive ballroom.

u/Own-Midnight-5231 8h ago
Yeah, it's actually a problem. This year Strictly come dancing hired one of Britain's/the world's greatest talents for the show. Like, I understand why she wants to go in that direction, but at this rate we are never winning anything in that professional category.

What I would give to have 2 OGs like Karina and Anna T come back to do a dance with Daniella and Adele

I actually don’t mind this. If someone takes a car for a drive no one is saying “wow look at that driver!”Instead people are commenting “wow what a great car!” I understand it may feel like an objectification, but I think they’re trying to showcase the woman in this situation.

u/JohnBick40 13h ago
Most guys would consider it a compliment and most girls consider it an insult.
Therefore it's better for the guys not to insult the girls when they in fact wanted to do the opposite. Just change the wording a little.

If wonder if people would feel differently if some of the male pros also got nicknames? Or do only women get the nicknames because the male counterparts are their frame?
Just musing over why cars for women and drivers for men? What nicknames would work for a male dancer?

I am a woman and I actually don't mind the car nicknames either. They are just trying to say she is of high class and quality.

I really dislike the car analogy.
But also, how many spins did she do there at the end and still end up on balance and exactly where she need to be? They looked quick too. I'm dizzy just watching.
