When a core concept of a series is power levels, it needs to go to insane places to keep raising the stakes.

power levels are a midpoint thing. Incidentally it's also when the shark skatepark of tever more powerful villains kicks in. Befoe King Piccolo the escalating factor was skill.

The funny part is that they never abandon the car aspect. They stop a nuclear submarine, using cars. They go to space, using cars. They skydive, using cars
The writers are willing to change everything about the franchise, except for the fact that it's the car movie

Indeed, quite remarkable how every season got crazier than the one before it.
I should make work of reading the books at some point.

Remember Zabuza and Haku? On rewatch, That fight feels like it’s from a whole different show after seeing everything later on. Also the way we wildly boosted everyone later makes Zabuza look like a grunt in retrospect lol. Dude’s a full grown adult in his prime and is like half a Kisame. Also the way weaving signs could take like a full minute of different shapes before casting basic jutsu even for high level shinobi early on makes everyone later feel like some kind of demigod prodigy that can grab two fingers and spawn a house, three intelligent dogs, and a small moon on the battlefield.
13
u/coolios14 1d ago
Yeah there's gotta be a fine line when it comes to ninjas being subtle and sneaky somewhere between using spiritual energy to cover your tracks, to fighting using giant eye power or wooden gundam mechs

I recommend reading the Manhwa/Webcomic. It gets stupidly over the top in a entertaining way. The problem with the anime was that they tried so hard squeezing in 100 chapters that they cut a lot of stuff.

It's one of life's great mysteries isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don't know, man, but it keeps me up at night.

But that show starts by showing people getting ready to fight using a gigantic mecha in space, so that doesn’t fit the meme
59
u/SmokingTanuki 1d ago edited 20h ago
C'mon, Gurren-Lagann is something like 10m tall in the beginning and the show ends with mechas throwing galaxies as throwing stars. Propotionally the scaling is even bigger than the OP's post.

u/AfricanAmericanMage 1d ago
Yea that show went off the rails immediately. Right from the very beginning it was honest about what it was and what it was trying to do.
Side note: For anyone who hasn't watched Gurren Lagann please do. As someone who really does not enjoy mecha anime, in general, it is one of my favorite animes of all time, full stop.

Naruto. From ninjas to aliens

u/Forgetheriver 1d ago
Hold up what
14
u/cpMetis 1d ago
The power ramp up at the tail end of the Naruto and Shippuden is absurd. Then they reveal it's all because alien (the whole story has lots of references to traditional Japanese stories, and they decided to end with the woman from the moon and for some reason decided this meant it all started with an alien).
It's mostly ignorable in Naruto since it only matters for one character and you can kinda just pretend she's like a foreigner or something and nothing really changes.
But then... Boruto.
It's like the entire plot of Boruto. Like there are dozens of these aliens and they're all OP and their drama is now our drama.

I was watching adventure time when on LSD and it lined up so weird with the episodes we watched. First "hall of egress" which felt like a 12 hour timeloop, then the episode with the Lich where he goes "SLEEEEEEEP", and that was terrifying on a whole new level.
Just wanted some good vibes and happy colors :/

You have to look at the whole series, but Doctor Who went from fun little sci-fi flavored mysteries in its original run to everything from 2005 onwards upping the ante on saving the Earth, Universe, Multiverse, Time Itself, The Doctor turning out to be the most important being ever... it's ludicrous and exhausting now

I had a guy tell me I didn’t appreciate darling in the franxx because I didn’t understand its symbolism. it took everything I had not to have an aneurysm
4
u/Ry_Sy 1d ago
Which is why it should've stayed as a more lowkey story. There's already so many world ending threats in League of Legends, they didn't need to add another. Piltover/Zaun is exactly the region that should be more grounded and personal.
Also, it's their first animated show and I'm pretty sure they plan on making more. Starting off with a world ending threat makes it hard to build up to something bigger.
2
u/Ghostbreak4 1d ago
Agree, then again, it went wild just because they didn't focus on one narrative, and if they did, it wouldn't be what Arcane is today
22
u/Mirikado 1d ago
Name of the show is literally Arcane… of course that’s what it ended up being about. It’s almost like everyone was saying “Don’t fuck with magic or bad stuff happens” since ep 1.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is kinda like this. Starts off with guy learning ancient martial arts technique to slay his childhood rival who became a vampire.
By season 5 you've got the Italian mob being run by gangsters who have the power to open interdimensional rifts, shoot sentient bullets that track their targets, and do skyrim-quicksave/reloads with spacetime
