Campsite reccies

I'm very aware wild camping is the thing however me, my friend and my dog want to stay on a campsite. First time in Dartmoor, we will have 2 nights there. I've read so much and unsure where would be a good base. We are on a roadtrip from Manchester and will be continuing on to Cornwall. Also reccies welcomed of best one day hike to do that will give us a good taste of Dartmoor. Any reccies on anything Dartmoor really!

If you stay at Beardown Farm near Two Bridges you’ll be in the centre of the moor and they are a wildish camping site. You can either stay down by the river and pitch there or they have a flatter field up the top. All within easy walking distance of a car. It’s basic, portaloo and a tap kind of place but you’ll get the wild experience in relative safety of a campsite.

You can then leave here by walking north through the woods, up to Beardown Tors which will give you fantiastic views, head north east down to the weir and cross the bridge then up to any of the three tors you saw from Beardown depending on time. Have a look around Wistmans Wood (but don’t go in as it’s one of the oldest woodlands in the country that has never been cultivated and is legally protected) then follow river and path back to Two Bridges for the pub food. Walk back up road to Beardown Farm.

Or stay in Princetown behind the Plume Of Feathers at their campsite, will be busier and more of a village centre stay but there are loads of routes and paths out of there for walks. It’s very popular though.

For a first visit and just two nights, I’d probably look around Haytor, Widecombe or Moretonhampstead. They’re all good bases for getting a proper feel for Dartmoor and work well if you’re carrying on to Cornwall afterwards.

For your main walking day, Haytor is a great shout. You can do a really good circular walk taking in Haytor Rocks, the old granite tramway and Hound Tor, with some lovely open moorland views along the way.

If you have time, Widecombe and Postbridge are both worth stopping at too. And with the dog, just keep an eye out for livestock and ponies, as they really can appear anywhere!
