News [Megathread] Debian LLM/AI Vote & Results

Hey everyone. If you're not aware, Debian will be concluding its General Resolution vote on the usage of LLMs by 23:59:59 UTC of August 28th. We are almost assured to get some level of traffic from interested people depending on how the results go, given the potential ramifications on both Debian and other downstream projects, so I've took it upon myself to make a megathread early. All other threads regarding the AI vote will be locked and redirected here.

We will also restrict discussion of the results on our Discord and Fluxer channels, see Tech Discussion on Fluxer OR #tech-general on Discord instead of the general channel on either (if you can't access either link, we have buttons on the sidebar for each platform. Both are bridged and can communicate with one another.

Results will be posted into OP by the time they are received. There are eight options on the ballot that can be viewed here in their entirety. A reminder that Rule 1 and 3 always remain in effect.

EDIT (8/28/26)
The results of the General Resolution has concluded that the winning proposal will be Proposal E: Responsible Use of Generative AI.

Hey guys I'm learning how GTK works to make an app that shows user-installed top-level packages so that it's easier to look back on what you have installed. Someone please tell me to keep going, it's taking a lot of time but im not sure if its worth it

I just migrated to Linux and im having quite a hard time, I tried to download some stuff and It actually worked but then I got to the damned nvidia drivers. I tried the Debian Wiki, but i dont know if im too dumb that im missing something but every time I read I realized there were some steps missing, then I followed a thread here on Reddit to no avail, for last I watched a YouTube video which ACTUALLY downloaded the driver (Photo below) but i keep getting stuck on a login loop, I put my password, my screen flashes Black and im back at login page again. Cam somebody make me a step by step? I know im asking a lot but i just started and tbh I really want this to work, anyway thanks in advance :)

I think this is waaaay too beginner for this subreddit but atp im kinda desperate lol :P

Debian Stable Question Help with debian on my home server

Hi everyone! I use debian for my home server and i like it.

I have debian (no window manager, only terminal) installed on an old laptop on a micro sd (because his hdd is broken). I also have another hdd that i use to store the docker containers and the container's data.
I disabled the sleep mode when the lid is closed and I wonder: can i put the pc in sleep when i'm not using the containers so i can extend the life of the sd card and of the hdd? Then when i'm opening a container it restarts and after some inactivity it goes again into sleep mode turning the drives off.
Thanks!

News Debian 11 bullseye LTS ends today

Long-term support for Debian 11, codenamed "bullseye", ends today, 31 August 2026, five years after its release. Debian will no longer publish any security updates for it.

A subset of bullseye packages will continue to be supported by third parties under the Extended LTS program. Individuals and companies who want to keep running Debian 11 can contract with those providers and have the packages they depend on added to that set.

Upgrading to Debian 12, which has Long Term Support until June 2028, is free for all Debian 11 users.

Dual nvidia 1660’s

Since I’ve installed a 2nd 1660 GPU the 2nd GPU can hits 100% when gnome loads and stays at at 100%. Does this sound like a hardware, driver, or OS issue? Claude and Gemini have been no help.

ps I’m hoping to use both GPU’s for local AI models (noting critical or long term use)

Debian Stable Question Nuevo usuario

General Debian Question Why does Debian GNOME always set DejaVu Sans Mono as default monospace font?

I tried running Sid in a VM and even with latest GNOME, its default monospace font is still DejaVu Sans Mono, why is that? Especially when you compare it with Debian's Plasma which correctly follows the recommended Hack font. Why does Debian does this? Or maybe this is because of upstream GNOME? I also don't see Adwaita Mono when i do `apt search`. Adwaita Sans is set correctly though.

Debian Stable Question Firefox unable to play back videos on reddit, some other sites

I have tried both the version of Firefox in the Debian repos and the Mozilla repos. I have installed ffmpeg and x264.

I do use Firejail for sandboxing and suspect that might be the issue.

Any suggestions? Did not have these issues on Arch, even using Firejail with the same profile.

SOLVED

I'm a dumbass: the NoScript extension in Firefox that I installed had the one Reddit domain needed to play video blacklisted. I toggled it to "trusted" and now video works.

Feel free to lock me in the pillory in the middle of town and mock me.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

About half of apps experience this artifact when resizing. Especially noticeable when dragging left corner. Can it be fixed?

Iam using Debian13+kde plasma on this HP Business pc,it always greys out and letters fade(*Check letters on start menu) at boot and i had to force shut it down by holding power button if it both KB&mouse too goes unresponsive, Also sometime it just stucks and iam able to open terminal (with ctrl+alt+T) and do sudo reboot

New to debian

Hi there! I have and old laptop that was really slow on windows and I decided to switch to debian because from what I hear it's better for old hardware that just needs something reliable and stable. I guess what I want to ask is there anything I have to know before switching? I consider myself relatively tech savvy in the sense I can pirate stuff use torrents search Google for problems I might face and tutorials, etc. but I really don't know much about coding or the depth of OS, and frankly I am not interested in knowing that much. So yeah that's that.

When will I be able to install all of Debian into my computer?

Post image

After several months of effort, I've managed to push the package count beyond 40,000 through the method of apt install 0* 1* 2* ... aa* ab* ac* ... zx* zy* zz*.

However, before this, I've been struggling with how to utilize my hard drive space efficiently. With conventional partitioning schemes, I always end up with awkward numbers. My personal philosophy on hard drive capacity is: measure in GiB, and treat anything after the decimal point as scraps. When capacity is in the tens of GiB, anything after the ones place is scraps. When it reaches hundreds of GiB, anything after the tens place is scraps. When it hits thousands of GiB, anything after the hundreds place is scraps. When it reaches ten-thousands of GiB... well, I don't have that many drives.

Next comes partitioning. My total drive capacity is 2376.6 GiB, and after countless calculations, I finally arrived at a partitioning scheme that satisfies me: /efi 35 MiB, / 2300 GiB (Debian 13), /tmp 63.5 GiB, / 10 GiB (Debian 12).

Need help in buying nvme.

I have a lenovo m720q tiny, i3 9100t, 16gb ram, samsung 970 evo plus 256gb nvme, I tried installing debian 12, it crashes when the installer is at "installing base system" only for once it somehow went pass that, and crashed at installing "software package or something", I tried the aspm and other commands in GRUB but still no success, so i want to purchase a different nvme, I'm thinking of buying the wd sn740 SDDPNQD-512G-2006 or the kioxia BG7_KBG70ZN512G, which one would not crash? Edit: The power adapter is 65w. EDIT: DISABLING TURBO MODE IN BIOS WORKED! IT DOESNT CRASH NOW, AND BOOTS INTO DEBIAN 13, SSD HEALTH IS GOOD, BIOS HAS BEEN UPDATED FROM 2019 TO 2026 VERSION. IF I ENABLE THE TURBO MODE, IT MIGHT CRASH AGAIN, NEED HELP TO SOLVE THAT ISSUE. THANKS!

Beginner: Root locked on boot

Post image

Hello! I got myself into trouble after I tried to fix a problem with a harddrive not mounting. I followed s guide on troubleshooting and edited my fstab. After I rebooted I got presented with this. I am afraid. What can I do?

SOLVED:

  • Pressed E on my keyboard when presented with Grub menu.
  • On the line that starts with linux: I added init=/bin/bash at its end
  • Ctrl+X or F10 to boot into a command prompt
  • mount -o remount,rw /
  • nano /etc/fstab
  • In my case I changed the line at the bottom, about an external harddrive - from default to nofail and from 0 2 to 0 0. Ctrl+O and ENTER and Ctrl+X
  • Rebooted and then it was done
