Success Story Decluttering Tool: Davy Jones’ Locker

Bought a large ocean themed children’s hamper at a thrift store. It has become my decluttering godsend. When I want to get rid of something, I throw it into “Davy Jones’ Locker”. Davy Jones’ Locker is a pirate word for sending someone or something to the bottom of the sea. It’s where you go when you walk the plank! The ridiculousness of this mindset has made it so easy for me to declutter. It delights me to yell “Send her to the Briny Deep!” in a silly pirate accent as I toss an unwanted item into the bin.

Honestly, turning decluttering into a stupid little ritual might be the most effective tip I’ve seen on here.

(Dr. Orpheus from The Venture Bros): "I cast ye back (point at it) to the thrift store (cross arms) from whence ye came (throw horn)!" And put it in the give away box.

My husband and I, when returning from successfully dropping something off at the thrift store, or getting a friend to take some stuff off our hands -- when we get home we both cheer "OFFLOAD!!!!"

But what do you do when the box is full? Will you empty it all into the bin/trash, or is it going to be difficult for you to properly get rid.

Erm... ooo arrr, cap'n. Just to be polite.

I got some free foldable shelves that I thought I was going to use for plants, but they’ve become my donation shelves instead! Keeps them off my table and less cluttered. I let friends take what they want and donate the rest!

Occupying a different mental space is always helpful when things can get personal. Sometimes I pretend I'm a professional and that helps me!

I "employ" myself. I don't want to waste the precious working hours of the personal organiser.
Whatever works!

Love this. I bought the Martha Stewart big bags but your version sounds more fun.

What a great tactic! I started using a large recycling bag but your idea is more aesthetic!

I never forget to apply my skincare after a friend called it "using my lotions and potions". Gotta make time for magic!

I'm obsessed with this idea, I want one now. Sounds much more aesthetically pleasing and fun than the giant black contractor bags I leave around. Maybe I can use them to line a trunk. 🤣

This is so funny, and charming. But also practical. Can you share a pic? 😂

Davy Jones’ Locker... Arrrgg. lol

Love this idea! But what next? Donation, giving, church facility, or landfill? What happens next I'm curious?
