Bi-weekly discussions #6-The Twin Blade Knife

Welcome back to another round of Bi-weekly discussions, where this time, we're focusing on the Twin-Blade Knife from Death of the Outsider.

Some 4,000 years before the events of the game, a cult (the remnants of which now reside within the Quarry) saw in the stars to sacrifice a boy. So they kidnapped him from his home, bound him to an altar, and killed him with the Twin-Blade Knife, thus creating the Outsider. And if the weapon could make the Outsider, it could also un-make the Outsider as well, hence why we go to obtain it.

It's probably my second favorite sword (the first being the Folding Blade from the first and second game), but I like the unsheath/sheath animations where the fragments of the weapon form in your sword hand. I also like the charge effect, with the little beam that pushes NPCs. It kind of reminds me of the charge beam effect from the Master Sword in the Legend of Zelda series. It's a shame DOTO is a short game and we only get to use it in Missions 4 and 5, but I won't deny I had fun with it.

But what do you think of the Twin Blade Knife?

Subreddit Discord available here: https://discord.gg/YsffweB7e4

As you know, this subreddit has had its own Discord server for a few years now. Today we have rebranded the server to Dishonored Universe, which means that there are now channels for Deathloop although obviously the server is still Dishonored centric. With the recent news of a potential Dishonored 3 in the works we'd like to invite more people to join our community, so I hope to see you there soon!

The main antagonist of Dishonored 2 should have been a revolutionary and not Delilah.

117 Upvotes

So, Delilah's story (in my opinion) should have been wrapped up in the DLCs. At the end of the day she wasn't even a charismatic villain to begin with. In D2, she's extremely one dimensional.

Having the plot of D2, that the Duke staged a revolutionary coup with an actual revolutionary would have made perfect thematic sense. Because at the end of the day, a literal witch taking power and sacking Dunwall didn't feel like a good juxtaposition to what you're doing.

You're trying to regain your own power back. That's why you're doing all of this. And the potential moral conflict of fighting a villain that actually gives a shit about the people would have been perfect.

The Crown Killer story line would have been better if the propaganda was used to stoke the fires of civil unrest. It still would have made sense.

For the final level, you could have had different variations of it based off of chaos and your choices. Maybe the revolution really was good for the people. Maybe it was just as corrupt as the Duke's rule.

"But what would have stopped Corvo from just killing everyone with his powers if it wasn't for Delilah taking the mark?" The Abbey has literal boxes that stop magic. To the point they managed to block the use of magic outside of Coldridge. If they literally stormed the place with that music blasting through everywhere, it would have also been a good metaphor for the revolution. The drums of change.

Dishonored has never been about black and white morality. In the low chaos route of 1, you literally condemn a woman to be abused and raped on the daily (I know this was retroactively changed in the books, but you don't have the context in game.). But with Delilah, there are no redeeming qualities. She's the bad guy, you're the good guy. Doesn't matter if you're in high chaos or not.

For the most part, it would have also made replacing the Duke with the body double a much better choice. Because if you kill him, he just gets replaced by the next tyrant in power and the status quo is the same. But if you replace him with your crony, you could have cut off aid to Dunwall. And then you'd be one step closer to restoring your status quo.

Literally everything could have been better without the stupid mystical witch elements. And it would have also made a no-powers run more thematically fitting. It would have forced you to get "on the ground", see how the people live. And it should have had its own ending, separate from chaos, where you actually have some real empathy for your own subjects. Where you try to meaningfully change things for the better, with real perspective this time. Not because you were given the throne due to your birthright or supernatural powers. But because for the first time ever, you experienced what normal people go through on the daily.

Thanks for coming to my LARP talk.

I finished a run where i don't kill anyone, don't get spotted BUT ALSO no one saw any body on the ground AND i made sure that enemies don't see me for even 0.1sec (the little white spotting indicator) now i'll do the same with exception of killing EVERYONE. Do you have any ideas for a cool run?

Corvo, emily, billie, or daud. Whose powers would you want irl?

31 Upvotes

Maybe this makes me a bad person but i feel like i'd want to use possession, just to see what it's like to be someone else for just a moment. There's a massive case to be made for daud's Arcane Bond, but you have to be prepared to stake your chances of being caught by the government on everyone you bond with and their ability to remain undetected.

I feel like daud is the smartest choice, just to share the experience of being superhuman with someone else, but not the wisest choice.

Got Dishonored 2 (Void Engine) working on VR [WIP]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Got Dishonored 2 working in VR on a Meta Quest 3. Full 6DOF for both the headset and controllers. Full-stereo is coming along. Getting 6DOF for the headset was easy, but for the weapons, it was a complete nightmare. Still a lot to do, so don't expect anything soon.

The engine is the Void Engine (not the same as Dishonored 1), so figuring this out might mean a Dishonored: Death of the Outsider VR mod is possible too, and maybe maybe if someone cares enough a Deathloop VR mod. Odd timing because I know someone just showcased a Dishonored 1 VR mod super recently. I'm not that same guy.

Why does the Bloodflies in Dishonored 2 feel like not being a big of a deal gameplay wise

60 Upvotes

I personally think, the bloodflies should had a bigger impact on the Atmosphere of Karnaca, like being more of a threat towards the urban environment and society similar in comparison to the rat plague of the first game, tied to High Chaos.

It feels like Bloodflies are more a nuisance than a threat. I think if bloodfly lavae infected people would roam around Karnaca on high Chaos, it would had made High Chaos feeling dire and impactful. Not as a Rat Plague 2.0, but as a similarly dangerous scenario of decay of state visual wise that i personally think was too little for high chaos.

spoiler Why do I have the Outsider´s mark? Spoiler

4 Upvotes

This screenshot was taken at the very start of the game after first arriving at Hound´s Pit Pub (so before going to sleep, waking up in the void and getting the Outsider´s mark). But as you can see, I already have it? Am I missing something? Or did the Dev´s just think ,,no one is gonna swim before sleeping in this area" (which I would be okay with too).

Other than a complete ghost run, what other challenge runs would you recommend to fans of the Dishonored games?

I would recommend a run with only the blink power if not no powers at all. A really good challenge for fans of the games.

Dishonored and Thief similarities

10 Upvotes

Been playing lots of both games recently and I'd like to show the similarities they have, and they are many, you can add if you wish below.

1- Air takedown: in Dishonored it is an assassination and Thief a takedown to sleep;

2- Thief a bow and Dishonored a cross... not the same but similar and both have special ammunition to use;

3- Detection system.. a white thingy above the heads of the NPCs. each with its own style though.. although in Thief staying in darkness is part of the stealth system while in Dishonored unfortunately not;

4- Pickpocketing, even the pouches are similar.. while in Thief there's a slight timer to pickpocket;

5- In Dishonored there's a "Plague" while in Thief there's "Gloom";

6- Guard dogs...

7- Magic play a role in both games

8- Totally new, fictional places, with Dishonored seemingly being in another planet itself and Thief a new region somewhere on Earth or maybe another Earth too. And in question of Time.. both are in the style of 1800s fin de siecle, with similar technologies.

And so on and so forth feel free to add more!

Are Dishonored novels (The Corroded Man, The Return of Daud and The Veiled Terror) worth reading?

17 Upvotes

As someone who's obsessed with Dishonored and never gets boring playing it over and over again, I also love reading and I recently found out that there are some Dishonored novels. Sadly I can't acquire physical format, so I'm considering buying the digital one.

Are these novels really worth reading as someone who is obsessed with Dishonored story?

Question about collectibles

2 Upvotes

Hello everyone! Hope you have an amazing day! So I just started playing Dishonored and I gotta say that I enjoy it so far. Always loved stealth games. However, there are way too many collectibles and im getting a bit overwhelmed. Are they needed or can I just ignore them? Its a headache trying to collect all these things, from coins, notes, Bone charms, blueprints, paintings and safes. Personally I feel like I want to skip them all. I prefer to focus on the stealth.

Thanks for any insight!

TIPS Anyone have any run ideas that breathe life back into the games?

11 Upvotes

Back in the day i got some good mileage out of dishonored 1 with runs like "no weapon usage/strangling" to make me depend entirely on things like windblast and thrown objects to deal with enemies.

But these days, even with the first 2 games, the dlc, and death of the outsider, i just can't figure out any kind of run to make the game difficult and fun again when i get the urge to come back to them.

There's 2 main issues to it.

First is that going magic-less or using only 1 spell makes it so you no longer have to collect runes, and can skip most of the game. The more you restrict what you're allowed to use, the less of the game you have to actually do.

Second is the npcs. It kinda trivializes the game if you let yourself breeze right past them unseen. Whereas using the heart to judge them all turns into this misery fest of realizing the serkonan populace is 98% serial killers and 2% normal people.

Lmk if anyone has any good runs. If i think of any, i'll put them in the comments.

How do you rationalize the characters' inaction toward the abbey's recruitment methods?

65 Upvotes

We learn from the very first book about the abbey in the first game that they work by regularly abducting all the children they can -in a ritual, then bringing them away from the city and murdering the ones that aren't obedient enough, and indoctrinating the rest.

The overseers are all victims, but they're victims who perpetuate an endless, possibly annual cycle of eugenics against children by regularly abducting and killing kids, and WILL keep doing so if not stopped.

Every year emily or jessamine remained in power and did nothing, they were enabling and borderline endorsing this. Every year corvo didn't urge emily to act, or use his powers to cut down the abbey himself (which he could easily do), he was enabling and endorsing it. Every time you spare an overseer, you are killing several innocent children by proxy.

And corvo and emily have the gall to try and rationalize the abbey as a good thing in the low chaos playthrough if you inspect the 7 strictures on the wall in Edge of the World, by claiming some people/corvo's mother take comfort in the strictures. Grown adults taking comfort from moral simplicity in exchange for regular ritualistic child murder.

While in high chaos they instead talk about burning the abbey to the ground. Ironic that the "bad" playthrough is the only one where our main characters even consider taking responsibility for the powers they've been given, and protecting and giving back to the people with them, considering the moral we repeatedly have rehearsed to us in dishonored 2 is that bad things happened because emily and corvo did nothing with their power to stop people like duke luca or delilah.

Ironically, if they hold themselves to this power fantasy and do get rid of the abbey after the high chaos playthrough, the number of lives you can take in the game in high chaos pales in comparison to the number of innocent lives that will be saved if the abbey ceases to exist afterward. Ironically, high chaos is a drastically better ending for the weak and powerless people who don't have teleportation or possession to defend themselves. Low chaos is just dressed up as a good ending to our priviledged palace-enjoying lives where we can safely ignore the abbey.

When you watch jessamine die, you're watching a ruler die who allowed and indirectly or even directly endorsed an institution that was committing regular ritualistic child murder and eugenics, and just sat around her palace eating grapes and figs. We're just lucky enough not to see it or be forced to grapple with it.

Just finished DotO and it was... alright?

41 Upvotes

I don't know if its because of my deep love for 1 and just finished 100% 2 but I just played through Death of the outsider for the first time finally and I was... disappointed? I know its more of a standalone dlc more than a full fledge game.

But it felt glaringly hollow.. the npcs felt more static.. and less alive in 1 and 2 i felt like every npc had a purpose or would have idle convo with other npcs. With Death.. the npcs seemed almost braindead? The maps seemed so condensed and closed off

And a multitude of other things. It is a shame this is where the dishonored story ended.. but at least we got to see the sisters to the abbey of the everyman, that was very cool.
