Discussion [Megathread] The Next Season of Doctor Who: Fancasts, Speculation, and Where We Go Next

Let's have a fresh megathread to discuss and speculate about the future of Doctor Who. Place your ideas, and fancasts and wishlists, and other hot takes in here.

What belongs in here:

  • Fancasts and casting: Who is your top pick for the Doctor and their companions and their foes? Do you want unknown actors or established names? Old returning villains and monsters or new ones, and who would play them?
  • Production and crew: Have you noticed someone working on another show that would make a good addition to the team? New directors, writers, cinematographers? New showrunner? Old showrunner? No showrunner?
  • Plot suggestions: What do you want to see happen after Billie Piper's appearance? Longer theories should probably go into their own separate text posts.

A few quick housekeeping reminders: Standard sub rules still apply. We all know casting and showrunner debates get intensely heated. Please help out by keeping things civil and avoid personal attacks. Instead of engaging with someone being hostile, report them.

Also, no or little leaks discussions. If you're bringing up leaked set photos or anything else, please remember to use spoiler tags.

Standalone posts about fancasts will be removed and redirected here. A fresh megathread will be posted every few weeks.

Let's hear what you've got.

Arts/Crafts The Dalek Empire Flag

Based on the symbol seen in the 1973 Doctor Who serial Frontier in Space, this symbol alludes to the Daleks hidden presence leading up the climax of the story where it is revealed they are creating false flag attacks between two enemy empires, Earth and Draconia, to bring them into war and in the chaos commence a surprise attack that'll destroy both of them utterly and ruthlessly.

The logo is used for the human colony world Sirius IV. A world secretly under Dalek control with assistance from the renegade Time Lord known as The Master and fittingly their symbol hints to this fact unsubtly throughout. I've recreated it from scratch and added the 1970s Dalek eye pupil which was a standard design fixture of the era, consider it what they'd use when the Daleks are not hiding in the shadows and pulling the strings.

The credits on the back of the newly released Circuit Breaker Blu-ray mis-credits Christopher Eccleston as "Ecclestone". It's not like he's the actor who launched modern Who or anything! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Discussion Doctor Who VHS Tapes and DVDs

Hello, I am posting this here and hopefully this doesn’t violate any of the guidelines and rules of this subreddit.

My dad was an avid Whovian and taped and recorded a lot of Doctor Who. For ‘New Who’ he even made his own DVDs (with titles and extras etc). He also has a ton of recordings of Sarah Jane Smith Adventures, Torchwood, tailers, audio and comic relief specials. Basically as much as an archive as one could make at home.

Unfortunately now that he has passed away, we have a large amount of this archived content and no where to put it. I am trying to find a home for it. It’s available for free to anyone who would collect from Surrey / Kent(or meet at a midway point). If you are interested or have any ideas where I should post this instead please let me know.

It feels so redundant now everything is online and on dvd but because Dr Who has so much lost media, I couldn’t bear to get rid of it without offering it out first.

Thank you for reading!

Misc Warning about new Battles in Time cards

I have seen others discuss this problem already but want to share my experience with the new Battles in Time set.

Multiple groups of almost identical packs, I've added pictures of 2 of them but there was 4 sets of duplicated packs in this SINGLE box. Also did not get a single Super Rare which is advertised as 1 in 18 packs (no guarantee sure, but clearly something has gone wrong with production)

I'd warn others do not buy full booster boxes of Battles in Time, this is pretty shocking standards which I've never seen in any other trading card collections.

Discussion The TARDIS, Too Much Bigger on the Inside?

Upvotes

I'm hoping, when the programme finally does return, that the console room returns to something more akin to the classic series.

Whilst I did like the look of the latest design, it was far too big. The classic series had a more homely, safe, feeling for me and felt more practical rather than overly impressive.

I know the original series design was down to budget constraints but it worked well and, although it evolved over the years, the design concept remained constant.

The reimagined console rooms for The Fugitive Doctor and the stolen TARDISes in Nu Who got it right for me. A higher budget take on the classic design. It was a real thrill for me to see the 12th Doctor at the controls of a TARDIS that harked back to the original.

Arts/Crafts Gallifreyan-inspired tattoo

Post image

When I got my first tattoo 6 years ago I somewhat regretted that I didn't get anything Doctor Who related as the show has played an important part in my life. So immediatly I started thinking about my second tattoo, which would be on my right leg, and I knew it had to incorporate circular gallifreyan. I tried specific phrases but I didn't like how they looked aesthetically, so I ended up deciding to just use the imagery without it having meaning anything in particular. This is about 6 cm x 6 cm big. The letter M is after my last name.

Discussion Crack theory: The Timeless Child is actually BOTH The Master *and* The Doctor. At once, at the same time.

OK, seriously hear me out on this. It would have the potential to be very messy but could also be a very satisfying direction to take the Timeless Child arc in if it went well.

So, let's think through the logic of the Timeless Child/Fugitive Doctor being pre-Hartnell. After being captured by Division, the Doctor is essentially forcibly regenerated back into a child, their memories are wiped and their regenerations are set to the limit of 12 total which has become standard for Time Lords. That child self grows up with The Master, and goes on to become the 1st Doctor we all know and love.

However, there remains a very strong contingent who would prefer The Master to be the Timeless Child. It remains the most straightforwardly fitting approach, as it ties into the Masters madness, although it doesn't fill every gap. It doesn't explain why Tecteun believed The Doctor to be The Timeless Child, or the nature of the Fugitive Doctor. It is an incomplete solution, like it's just missing another half to complete a whole.

I propose a third solution, a middle way if you will. The secret ingredient? *Bi-generation*.

The Fugitive Doctor is eventually captured by Division, and subject to a forced regeneration. However, they don't regenerate into *one* child, but **two**. Both the Master and the Doctor grow up so intimately close, like siblings, because without realising it they are two halves of a whole. They go on to live their own lives, with The Doctor assuming the original mantle subconsciously encoded in both of their very being, meanwhile the Master having been forcibly driven mad, jealously sets out on their own path to create an archetype wholly of their own.

This also ties into the early plans from the Pertwee-Delgado era to reveal that The Master and The Doctor were brothers. In a very real way they are siblings. Something even closer than that, they are both halves of The Timeless Child, split in twain long ago in a life they've both forgot as a punishment for their impertinence.

Perhaps the Timeless Child pocketwatch contains the secret for their reunification as one whole being. Perhaps the tragedy of the natures they have developed for themselves is that can *never* happen anymore, as independent beings they are now too irreconcilably different.

Idk, this just occurred to me in another thread. As long as bi-generation is a thing there is no particular reason they couldn't have both been one being as The Timeless Child, once upon a time.

Request Funny Clip of Janet Fielding at Convention

Does anybody have the clip of Janet Fielding at some sort of late 80s/90s fan convention (possibly panopticon 8) leaning into the microphone and saying “…suicide”? Used to see it on twitter all the time but can’t find it now and am curious what question she was answering.

Discussion On a rewatch of Father’s Day and reminded of how on my first watch, I expected a lot more reapers

When I first watched this episode, I loved the idea of a being that would appear and attack in the case of paradoxes. We whine about the writing crutch of fixed points in time on here but if they’d kept these things around even just once in a while, an unstoppable monster that serves as a consistent narrative reason for being careful with events, I think a lot of those stories would make more sense.

Maybe not.

Discussion What if the Doctor is/companions are accidentally creating bootstrap paradox around time?

Even small things like phrases which they grew up with and say to locals without thinking about it which ends up being reused by said locals which ends up being the reason said companion/Doctor knows it.

I was thinking of the unclear origins of the shave and a haircut, two bits knocking pattern and the Cool S. What if one of them casually drew this S symbol when visiting the 1980s because they remembered it?

Comic Book Imagine my surprise when I saw this

Post image
187 Upvotes

I've been going through the DW comics, including the coloured Classic Comics series, and I had no idea the Star Beast episode was based on a 1980 comic. Was it mentioned in the credits? If so, I completely missed it. Maybe this is a commonly known fact and I'm just embarrassing myself with my ignorance by posting it here, but I can imagine that even for those who did know about this, they probably found out a different way, haha.

Now I'm curious if I'll find any other "originals" in DW extended media - from comics to books to audio dramas - that were later adapted into an episode. Guess I'll just have to find out!

For the record, I preferred this version. I had a lot of problems with the TV episode, but the comic was a pretty fun story, and I liked the "extra" background with the Doctor landing on the Wrarth Warriors spaceship beforehand, along with Fudge's technobabble when talking about the Meep's ship.

E: Sorry I worded it badly, but I'm looking forward to finding out the adaptations for myself. The surprise is part of the fun part haha.
