Dr650/Drz400/Klx30p
Hello guys, Its my first steps into the adventure world, truly in love with Tenere700 and Vstrom 800DE, but I see none of them is good idea for first motorcycle, so I decided to start bit lighter and slower one. Have seen tons of YouTube videos and reviews about those 3 bikes. But want to get more from just owners. I am 1.94 so heigh not problem, I just want to learn practice and get some basic off-road skills and improve them, also travel around town for just beginning like 100/150km, and also everyday usage, cuz am tired af with traffic.
The reason klx is in this list just bvs, cheap, easy, reliable and light. But I think dr650 is more well rounded and possible you can do much more with it, so drz400 too.
By the look Dr and Drz are my favorites too.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I think all would be good options. I would suggest DR650 > DRZ as it is just a bit better on the highway. All in all, it’s probably the best bike for you to have for multiple years because it gives you the most to grow into. This isn’t my first bike but I find it hard to want to spend the money to upgrade from the DR as it really does every thing I want it to well enough and was a great deal at $3500 US.

All three are excellent machines. If your goal is to get to a T7, the closest in terms of weight is the DR650. However, if you prefer something much more agile and lighter, the KLX is the winner there.

Dr650 can be a bit spicy if you've never ridden but can be done same can be said about the drz400, my dr650 is my daily and adventure machine and shits it in in use cases like yours, both of these bikes only fail from absolute abuse and neglect but parts are cheap and a huge after market

All three are great bikes, but are best for different use cases. If you want to get into challenging off road terrain right away, and aren’t going to be driving on interstates (inter-provincial highways? I don’t know the correct term for Canada), the KLX and DRZ are both much better options for single track. The DRZ can ride on the interstate, but isn’t much fun above 100kph. If you’re interested in taking longer trips at higher speeds, the DR650 is the answer hands-down. It’s pretty heavy, so it can be a handful on tougher trails, but it’s ideal for everything else in my opinion. Why are you interested in a big ADV bike? Are you planning on long, multi day highway rides? If so, they’re good at that, but they’re pretty terrible on anything rougher than forest service (gravel) roads. Really depends on being honest with yourself and realistic about the riding you’ll really end up doing. You’re being very smart by not jumping directly to a big ADV bike, it’s always better to get something more approachable to begin with. If it was me, I’d probably get a DR650, ride it as-is for a year, and then decide what kind of riding I’m actually doing that I most enjoy, and then decide whether to modify the DR to better suit the riding I’m doing, or sell and get the ADV bike if I didn’t really go off road much, but like longer touring rides. I hope this helps!

Wow thats really good suggestion. I know its much different thing but I have experience car off-road, also owned some fast sport cars and like lost interest to cars, but never tried motorcycle, cuz sports/streets are somehow small and uncomfortable for me, cruisers are not my style too. Also not much interests in speeding, passed that moment too... Imo thats much different world and much different experience with a lot of joy, but my goal are not just cruising on highway city by city. Just want to explore fully potential of adventuring world. DR650 from this view and expectation looks like all life keep bike, with its special character and personality.

Replace the DR’s stock muffler with a GSXR’s and you’ll drop 7 lbs right off the bat and add a nice but not obnoxious growl; open the airbox, jet the carburetor and adjust the air-fuel mixture and you’ll have a pretty feisty dual sport at the ready.

I've been riding a DR650 for 17 years. Got close to 60,000 miles on my old 2007. If I were to need a new dual sport sometime, I wouldn't even have to think about my choice. It's another DR.
