New carbs for Dr800

Hi everyone,

My Big 800 SR43 has almost 110k km on it and I want to bring the engine back to life.

I'm looking to upgrade to flat slide carbs, likely Mikuni TM36.

What setup works best for you in real life for low-end torque and smooth throttle response? Also, where is the best place to buy a pre-jetted complete kit these days?

My Big has an aftermarket exhaust and original airbox.

Is there a dr800 ? Is it custom made? Or a modded motor ? Big bore kit ? I have so many questions

It was made by suzuki, was never sold in the US.

So many questions that can be fixed with access to the internet. Yes, Suzuki made a DR800. Nicknamed DR Big. Happy Googling.

Not relevant, DR800 is a completely different bike.

You're going to have a hard time getting a kit, the DR800 wasn't the most prolific bike sold so mods are fairly limited. You'd be best off doing some caliper measurements and seeing what'd fit.

The amount of Americans here not understanding that this isn't a 650 with a big bore and that other markets for bikes exist, with different models...

Sorry to not be of much help either, OP. Some sort of 3d printed intake might allow a single carb conversion to something that can push lots of fuel like a TM42 or FCR pumper, but it won't be an easy project. For dual carbs I would say the TM36 is reasonable if there is a kit that you can buy with the setup for dual carb throttle. Niche cycles has eBay listings so you should be able to order from the US to wherever you are at. There are also some sources in Japan of course. Adapter rings to your intake side carb boots will be a DIY affair I suspect, which is easier than it has ever been with high quality 3D print materials, but still not a simple process.

A lot of these bikes used the same carb.. probably a makuni ..take carb off and find out..or find a manual and it will tell you..you want a rebuild..don't replace card unless it broken or something..you got to find out the jetting sizes

I have a 790 kit in my DR650. I use a TM40 (which is the standard flat side upgrade for them). 

I would go for a 40mm, not a 38 or 36. 

You may be able to call procycle and see what they recommend. Theyre good folks and well deep in the DR world.
