Discussion Audition help

One of the requirements for a wgi group I'm auditioning for is to bring a short piece that "showcases my talents." This is the first time I've come across something like this for an audition and I'm not quite sure what they really want. Should I prepare a wgi/dci lick, find a marching snare etude, or write my own piece? Any advice is appreciated.

All of those options would be valid to most instructors. It essentially means show up with something you can play well both technically and musically.

Show your strengths. For example if you have really good single stroke rolls find music that lets you showcase that. This can apply to lots of things- rudiments, tempo, dynamics, etc.

If you like to write licks that could also count as a strength and preparing something custom tailored to your playing style could be a good idea.

Conversely, don't force yourself to work on something that you know you're going to struggle with. We all have weaknesses when we play and that's okay, but an audition is not the time to highlight those things.
