What's with the increasing amount of nutters in Dundee?

I swear I can't walk through the city centre without seeing 2-3 crazy people either arguing with a wall or trying to fight an invisible man! A few weeks ago I had a verbal altercation with a woman at the bus stops in the Seagate who was trying to pull her trousers down in broad daylight in front of everyone! I told her to pull her trousers up especially as there's kids everywhere and she picked up her bottle of Lambrini like she was gonna lamp me with it!

Everyone's just awkwardly walking by pretending it's not happening where as I feel like in days gone by these people would've been bundled into a van and given the help they need? It is entertaining at times, I'll give them that, but it feels like there's more and more of these crazy people walking around these days.

Listed Building - local builder /joiner recommendations?

We're considering a few bits of work for a listed building in Dundee having recently moved to the area and wondered if anyone had personal recommendations? On our list we have removing an internal wall, moving a staircase, reinstating a window and reinstating an exterior doorway.

We would be hoping to have an initial discussion to explore feasibility and ball-park cost before submitting the relevant requests (planning and building warrant), but there seem to be no local forms listed on the FMB website and I don't want to take the pot-luck approach of Google. So anyone with a recent recommendation would be hugely appreciated.

Butteries

I'm in withdrawal... I need to taste some butteries, but I'm in Hampshire :(

I usually eat the supermarket ones, without the lard.. but recently found out they were all full of Palm Oil, which I don't particularly want.

Question is - is there any brand of butteries available to order online that are made with actual butter, or at least to a non-lard, non-palm oil recipe?

Struggling to make friends

Hello everyone,

I’ve lived in Dundee for around a year now and I’m finding it hard to make friends. I’ve downloaded the app ‘meet up’ but it doesn’t seem to be very popular in Dundee.

What are other ways to meet people here? I’ve sort of lost interest in a lot of things as I’ve found it l to just be quite lonely. I’m 22 female. Thank you

Looking for some advice about boilers

My combi boiler has packed up, it makes horrible noises and I’ve turned it off and isolated it.

How do you go about replacing them? Is it best to save up the £3-4k you need and buy outright or can you get it on credit?

I also have a broken radiator thermostat in the livingroom can I get that fixed at the same time?

Does anyone have any plumbers they would recommend for this? Should I use one of the big energy companies?

Tia

Sea food restaurants in Dundee?

Hi, are there any good sea food restaurants in Dundee? All the ones I found only serve fish and chips as seafood. I was thinking more oysters, crabs, lobsters?

35+ dating in the City!?

This is probably a niche question but I thought I would ask!

Where are people 35+ meeting people to date in and around Dundee? Like are there any events geared towards this here? Or even apps that are better for Dundee folk than others due to geography and population?

I need to get back out there and don't know where to start 😭 Help a gal out.

Anyone up for a couple pints tonight? 🍻

Hey! I made a post on here a few days ago about looking to meet some people in Dundee and actually ended up chatting to a few really cool people.

I'm thinking of heading to Wetherspoons tonight for a couple drinks and thought I'd see if anyone else fancied joining. Doesn't matter if we've spoken before or not, could be a good way for a few of us to meet each other.

I'm 21, into technology, programming, gaming, music, movies, card games/magic and generally just having a laugh. But you don't need to be into any of that 😂

Thinking maybe around 7–8pm, but I'm flexible. If you're interested, comment or DM me and we can sort out where/when.

No pressure, just a few drinks and hopefully a good laugh 🍻

Hoping someone would be open to swapping driving tests

Sorry if this comes across a bit nippy

Just wondering if anyone had their test coming up soon and weren't feeling ready to take it.

I have my test at the start of January and was hoping to see about getting a closer one.

Getting to and from work has been a nightmare the last few months

All the best

Looking to expand my social circle a bit

I’ve been working from home for a long time, and my social circle has gradually shrunk more than I’d like. I’m hoping to connect with some new people who enjoy good conversation, shared interests, and a bit of humour.

This is purely platonic — just looking to meet decent people and build some normal friendships. Nothing romantic or anything like that.

If you’re in a similar place, feel free to say hi.

Any pubs that may have the North Carolina vs TCU (college football) game on?

American here, sorry in advance, we’re not all loud assholes I promise! Know it’s a bit of a long shot but what’s my best bet for a pub showing the North Carolina vs TCU college football game? Starts at 17:00 out of Dublin, any recommendations are highly appreciated!

Do you speak Dundonian? Help with research on the Dundonian dialect

Hi everyone! I’m a PhD researcher in psychology studying Dundonian Scots and Scottish Standard English, and I’m looking for people who genuinely speak Dundonian to help with my research.

A lot of language research focuses on major languages, while regional varieties like Dundonian are much less understood. My research looks at how Dundonian is stored and processed in the minds of those who actually speak it, and what this can tell us about the relationship between Scots and English.

I’m particularly keen to hear from people who consider Dundonian a genuine part of the way they speak, whether you use it all the time or change how you speak depending on who you’re talking to or where you are.

The first step is a short online study (around 5 minutes) about your language background and use of Dundonian and English. It also includes a brief Dundonian vocabulary task.

You may then be invited to take part in a paid follow-up study, which investigates how people who speak both Dundonian and English store words in their memory. This involves naming pictures in both Dundonian and English and takes around 30 minutes to complete.

If you speak Dundonian, taking part would help us build a better scientific understanding of a language variety that is an important part of Dundee’s linguistic and cultural identity, but has received relatively little attention in language research. Click the link below to take part in the initial five-minute study:

https://research.sc/participant/login/dynamic/681A506B-A13D-4687-925D-A52B70C6968A

Thank you very much, and please feel free to share this with anyone else who speaks Dundonian and English!

EDIT: Sorry everyone, I should have said that there is a half-hour time limit. If those of you who were rejected would like to participate again, feel free! And thank you to everyone who has taken part so far; it is so helpful and very much appreciated!

Anyone keen to do the 5k Camperdown Parkrun?

This is a long short of sorts but I (39M) used to do the Camperdown Parkrun with my dog and really loved it. I've now got a 3 YO boy and bought a running pram recently but realised that you're not allowed to run with a dog and buggy, which has kinda prevented me from using it at the parkrun.

So if anyone wants to try out the parkrun with me, a cool 3 YO kid and a beautiful dog, I'd be all the happier for it.

I reckon the fastest I could do this course is 33+ mins with the buggy, but I'm not in this for PBs, so I don't mind going a little slower.

Arabic fragrance stall - Overgate

Anyone thinking of going to the Arabic fragrance stall in the overgate, get the fragrance you like and the name of it then buy it online for more than half the price they sell it for. Do not buy from that stall.

I fell victim to this today, bought a 90ml bottle for me at £35 then got a female one for my partner at “half price” so it was £55 in total… To then go home and google both, mine was £15 on amazon and my wife’s was £12.

Better yet, the £35 scent i bought, on the stalls official website, they’re selling it for £18 down from the RRP of £20..

Never again.
