yes but shirley definitely had no say in that 🤷♀️ so its not a counter to what she says even if she shouldnt have said it. shes a ballroom purist and whoever is casting on dwts is not. jan, who i don’t dislike at all before anyone comes for me, was hired because of his association with taylor swift who was at her absolute peak of popularity at the time.
Adele would've had to choreograph a basic samba routine for Jan and would have looked like a fool against the other contestants who had trained standard/latin pros.
This is my issue with this show altogether; it is not a fair playing ground at all.
It’s the way they are definitely right too…Selena does deserve to be a pro. And it kinda bashes her which is really kinda off considering Selena’s been pretty mature and supportive of everything going on. She’s an incredibly dancer and professional. She’s been putting in the work to get even better since next pro stopped filming. And I mean I LOVE Jan, but he didn’t have any ballroom or Latin experience when he joined the show and they still hired him! And he isn’t the only pro that was in that position at time of hire. So honestly this seems a little rude of Shirley imo… but what do I know.
Krysten Burtt made a comment on social media saying that she hopes Selena joins Derek’s tour this fall. Clearly she’s not on the show. Adele is following Conner. The winner is the worst kept secret and it’s kind of disappointing there is no surprise!
This comment by Shirley seems sooo unnecessary?? Especially considering how much flak Selena has gotten for being on the show. It doesn't sit right with me.
Why has Selena gotten so much flack for being on the show? That’s wild if that’s the case. Briar Nolet was on it and she’s far more inexperienced in ballroom. Like the fact that she did a backflip at the begging of her Samba solo really bugged me.
If you browse through the other DWTS subreddit, you'll see it. So much nastiness. Selena also posted an IG story responding to people calling her a "DEI hire" on Instagram. People are upset about her lack of ballroom training.
I think for Briar it was different because she got eliminated in the first week, so it didn't really matter. Especially after Erik got eliminated, the comments towards her got really nasty
Stephanie is trained in Ballroom and Latin and when she was younger she did win a couple of national Latin titles. And she's been cross training in multiple styles since she was a kid just like Ezra
This sounds condescending? Please don't hire people who have not trained in ballroom to generate drama and elevate ratings and then as a judge, slide into the comments section of people who ended up liking the commercial dancers.
Literally! Also, keep in mind this isn't like a huge influencer person who made this video. It's a relatively small account, so for her to be all up in the comments is just weird imo.
If Shirley had any say, Jan would still be touring with an artist.
2nd of all. She wants to see Selena as a pro, but she also wants Shirley as a judge to keep the pros in line for proper technique. That basically means Shirley has to correct Selena every week for 6 million people. I doubt OP is gonna love that.
Fact is thud Shirley has not critiqued any of Selena’s technique she has praised it. She has asked for more ballroom content , but Selena is a commercial dancer she does ballroom fusion and honestly that is what translates to tv the most …
She has done both. And she could've gone even harder if she wanted to, but Shirley is not dumb and can read the room. The US audience doesn't want to see an adjudicator at work, and Shirley knows that.
And no, Selena didn't do Ballroom fusion. That quickstep was just not a quickstep. (no turns, no chasse, no travel)
And salsa which isn't even a ballroom dance, was also a complete disaster.
Whether you like it or not, this show still has some responsibility to safeguard the art of these dance styles.
Ok now you are just jealous her salsa was a perfect blend of stage and salsa content. Also on the note of a quickstep no one and I repeat no one wants to watch a pure quickstep which is basically running in circles around a room and Selena was asked twice in row to do this style. What she put out on stage was entertaining and fun it was a fusion of ballroom and commercial which is stage ready. I am sorry I did not appreciate Adele literally grinding on gleb … and I love me some gleb but can we tone down the sexual inuendo just a bit and show actual dance?? I get it she’s beautiful to look at but the fact is they danced to one of the most powerful dance songs of all time and it hit flat. Musicality is huge in Choreography . I know Selena and Adele are friends and I am glad to see the professionalism between the two but I have a feeling if Adele is the next pro like spoilers say she likely won’t make it very far with her celeb as the choreography isn’t great and the personality doesn’t translate well. So much of this show is coaching and presentation. I am a Selena Stan and though all signs point to her not winning I still feel like they scouted her for this show and knew her experience if they had no intention on her winning why even ask?? Also if it’s about social media numbers and views she by far has the highest .. all except the Adele/glen combo which jmo just not a huge fan
This is the only issue I have with Shirley potentially being a fourth judge this season…. she cannot stay out of the instagram comments 😭😭 she loves to argue with people and always makes herself look worse
I miss the days of a two night show where night two was just glorious dancing that featured both ballroom and commercial dances, amazing choreography and professional dancers! Things started to unravel as they did away with all that and only recently made a come back with younger and more commercially appealing dancers like Rylee. It’s often painful watching the celebrities dance. Having the pro numbers mixed in makes the show worth watching for many of us. Selena would be a fantastic addition to the pro line up but I do think we need Adele too.
I mean, Shirley did not say who won. The only thing she said is what should have been obvious to everyone from the outset: You're not going to do well on DWTS if you don't know all the ballroom and Latin dances proficiently. The Selena stans are the only ones living in denial.
I personally think the issue is less that she doesn’t have much ballroom and Latin experience…and more that DWTS hasn’t appeared to care about said experience when hiring pros before. So double standards. It was stated that that’s who TNP was looking for, but it’s still a bit of a blurred situation. And lowkey unfair of Shirley to say this considering all the past hires DWTS has done that completely opposes that statement.

It’s not that it’s wrong. She is very much correct. But it’s not a great look as a whole because of last years controversy with Jan. He also isn’t the only pro in the history of the show to not have the Latin or Ballroom experience waking in (including some current pros). So while it is a valid point, it almost feels like not enough of a reason to not hire Selena if that makes sense? Like an odd thing to diss her about (if that’s even what it is because we all know tone is hard to read over text lol). I mean Adele has the experience so it makes sense that they hired her instead (allegedly hired I should say lol). But it just adds to the whole questionable mess. Idk, does that make sense? I also went and watched that TikTok and the person didn’t diss Adele or anything like that. It was very kindly put. Actually it makes me wonder if Shirley said that here because she’s tired of hearing that ballroom Latin criticism stuff but can’t professionally say any of that about pros currently on the show. At least from a public standpoint. Because that would be a much worse look than this. Idk lol that’s just speculation. Nothing too serious to think about 😅. And also I really respect Shirley. I think this whole Latin ballroom discourse is just generally messy
