I use an Alesis Nitro Max with the free BFD Player, but I don’t really treat the Nitro Max as a fixed drum kit. I use it more like a flexible MIDI trigger system.

I remapped some of the pads, and I also use a MIDI keyboard to trigger a China and other percussion sounds. I even went through MIDI notes 0–127 by ear to find different sounds and articulations in BFD that I liked, then mapped them wherever they felt most useful on my setup.

The hi-hat was the hardest part. BFD gives me multiple hi-hat articulations — closed, tight, half-open, open, etc. — so I spent quite a bit of time finding and mapping the sounds that gave me the half-open texture and response I wanted. I also adjusted the velocity curve so light hits stay clear and there is a more natural transition from soft to hard hits.

BFD Player itself is free, but my setup isn’t completely free. I bought the Zildjian Session Mix Vol. 1 expansion for about NT$1,300.

Interestingly, I didn’t choose it because it was new. I listened to several BFD expansions in different styles, including Pop and Metal, and simply picked the one that sounded best to my ears. Only afterward did I realize that this was the new Zildjian collaboration released in August 2026.

After using it, I found that I preferred its overall tone and balance, and it gave me even more sounds to experiment with and remap.

So this isn’t necessarily a setup I’d tell everyone to copy. 😂 It took some experimenting to build, but once everything was mapped, it became very simple and comfortable to play.

Really only posting this here because the drum shells are pretty rare and unique and maybe someone’s been looking for them.

I currently have an alesis nitro max and i’ve been eyeing arborea low volume cymbals, i want the feel from real cymbals and the sound, plus hi hats that i can actually play would be nice. How is the volume? i can make a bit more noise than e drum cymbals.

I have had a Yamaha dtxplorer for almost 20 years now. It has served me well and had very few, if any issues even after storing the kit in a hot Texas attic for a few years at one point. In the past year I have really rekindled my desire to play, I added a cymbal to the kit, started using Steven Slate Drums and it's really made the experience much more enjoyable. I'm at the point where I'm about ready to upgrade but in a little bit of paralysis by analysis state.

I'm 45 y/o, intermediate skill level at very best and in a good week I can find about 2 hours to play drums as a fun release from the stress. I'm ready to move to mesh heads and there's so many options now its daunting. Right now I have approximately $1000 saved for a kit and I'm not necessarily in a huge rush to get a new(er) kit but I find myself scouring, r/edrums, Facebook Marketplace and GC/Sweetwater looking at kits and wanting to make a move. In that price point I do like the features of the Simmons 90 and Nitro Ultimate/XL but with the dtxplorer lasting almost 20 years I am afraid these kits would last 3-5 years then I'm back on the market or doing repairs/replacements. I've also considered the Lemon T950 although the size might be too much for my space I currently use.

I wish the decision were easier or I just had an extra $1500 to get a higher end Roland or Yamaha and not have to worry about the longevity of the kit. I'm sure patience is my best bet and to just hold out another year or so and continue saving to see where I am at a year from now. Confused between Donner DED70 and Yamaha DTX 402K, they both cost basically the same to me and I am very confused which one to buy. Would like help deciding and also would love to know if there are any other options in the similar price range.

So i have discovered you can use a lemon kit with a roland module. I was going to buy a roland V31 module and buy a lemon kit. I was just curious, does anyone know if the lemon kit has trigger issues like the alesis strata prime and other alesis kits where when playing death metal and fast tech death and fast double bass and rolls and blast beats etc, the triggers dont pick everything up? Does anyone know if the lemons have the same issue?

Hello, as the title states I plan on converting my acoustic kit into an electronic/hybrid kit mainly for triggers. I don't know if this is the right sub to ask about diy drum triggers so please let me know if there is one out there.

Anyways, I plan on having clip on triggers kind of like the Roland rt30 series and only want them as single zone triggers, the tricky part is the housing, I have everything needed for the trigger itself(piezo discs, foam, etc) and the housing for the triggers is the only thing I'm missing.

Are there any ways to either find the housing that's somewhere out there or do I have to build it on my own, if so do I need to make a custom part or can I just grab a microphone clip and slap the trigger on.

Any help will be appreciated, thank you.

I have 2 questions - pardon me if they're on the noob side:

1. Our church purchased a VAD716, and I've been tinkering with it for months now, but I'm still not satisfied with the sound. Does anyone know about any downloadable worship kits for the V71? For those in the know (a minority of players, I would assume), church worship kits have a distinctive lower-snare sound and large, washy cymbals. I've made all the necessary changes to size up the cymbals and have played with the mic position, EQ, and ambience. I don't have time to set up layers, and I know this is really holding it back. It's not satisfactory to my ears right now.
2. https://collaborateworship.com/ has a downloadable kit for the V51 (compatible for V71 I assume), but the .td0 file never loads properly. I've formatted the SD card multiple times and followed all of the proper steps in the manual (and on YT videos). I get this screen every time (above)

Had to add a right hand tube extension to the rack to bring the second tom out more, but WOW. It's way more ergonomic in my opinion.

Hey r/edrums, I bought a Roland TD-17 kit half a dozen years ago that has served me incredibly well, and I'm looking to make an upgrade. The main thing I'm looking for it to go from an 8 piece kit (4 toms, 4 cymbals) to a 10 piece of 5 each. My local music store has a beautiful Alesis 10 piece kit on display for sale, but I'm hesitant to spend the five grand they're asking for it.

I was wondering what the consensus was on incrementally upgrading/hybridizing parts of my Roland Kit for Alesis components, and what I should be on the lookout for. Despite owning the kit for a number of years, I've done little to investigate how it works under the hood, so I'm hoping to gain some insight.

Here are the immediate modifications I clocked in the store:

• Upgrading the kit's brain. Naturally I'd need to replace the Roland module with the Alesis. The issue there seems to be the cabling? With my Roland kit, all the cables condense into a single input that I can't readily manipulate while the Alesis module has 10 individual plugs for each drum. The jack that plugs into to the toms/cymbals look the same, but I reckon I'd still need to buy individual cables for each piece once I make the upgrade.
• Cymbals - Already I need to replace my hi-hats and my ride; it's what prompted the upgrade in the first place. However, my ride has 2 inputs (one for the bell and one for the body) while the Alesis ride had just the one plug for both. The hi-hat module was also different. So both of those would need an upgrade. I guess the question here is whether I'd also need to replace my two crash cymbals for an Alesis model, or whether the cymbals are compatible as is.
• The toms and kick look like they can be re-used regardless of module. I'd just need to buy the missing 5th tom to complete my set.
• A bigger frame, since mine wouldn't have room for the bigger module and extra tom.

Am I missing anything obvious? Like I said, it's my first time undertaking such a project, so I'm not entirely sure what's standard in the industry, which component I can re-use from module to module, and what would need to be fully replaced. Or is bastardizing a kit like this not entirely recommended and it's better if I just bite the bullet and get the Alesis as is. Last I checked, my music store can order the individual pieces, but I haven't done a full inventory yet to see what the final price is. As far as I know, it might be cheaper to buy the kit that's on display anyway.

Hello, looking to replace the wires from the pcb to my cymbals for a guitar hero drumset. They are 3.5mm mono jacks. I have a stereo cable handy. Should I: solder the ring and sleeve wires together and use the ground or just connect the ground and ring wire to the existing wire connector?

So, I have everything set up and all my pads are set up to be the same kit. I noticed that one of my PDA120's (I have a 5 tom set up) is MUCH softer than any other drum in the kit. I have checked the volume, everything is good on that end. Is this a bad pad?

I have it mixed in with my acoustic kit but the pd 14 gets set off by everything.

How do I mix and match the internal sounds to make a custom user preset? I was able to do it on my nitro max. Is this kit too old for it?
