Crude Oil Tops $90 as US-Iran Fighting Escalates
Brent crude has climbed above $90 a barrel after fresh US-Iran strikes raised fears of major disruptions to oil supplies. Brent was around $91–$92, while US WTI was near $87. The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern because it carries a large share of global oil shipments.

homeowners want more predictable energy costs but my utility company makes that basically impossible
our power bill last month hit over 450 bucks which completely threw off our household budget for the month. living in an older house with central ac means summer months are always a total gamble, but seeing a massive jump out of nowhere without changing our habits was rough.
we tried doing that levelized budget billing plan with our power company last year to keep things consistent, but we still got hit with a huge true up charge at the end of the season anyway. now im looking into whether window film and a smart thermostat actually keeps monthly bills steady or if utility rates just keep climbing regardless.

Do Chinese electrolyzer OEMs overstate efficiency versus real operating performance?
I’m researching electrolyser performance and have come across reports suggesting that some Chinese alkaline electrolyser efficiency claims may look better on paper than what is achieved in actual operation.
One issue seems to be the way efficiency is reported. Some datasheets quote stack-level DC consumption or calculate efficiency largely from cell voltage, while actual hydrogen production can also be affected by Faradaic efficiency, shunt-current losses, auxiliaries, part-load operation and degradation.
For example, an OEM might advertise around 48–50 kWh/kg H₂ at rated conditions, but the effective AC system-level SEC during real renewable operation could be higher.
I’m trying to understand from people with actual project/OEM experience:
- Have you seen a measurable gap between quoted and actual SEC for Chinese electrolysers?
- Is the often-mentioned 10–20% performance gap realistic, or is that overstated?
- Are differences mainly due to reporting boundaries (DC stack vs AC system), Faradaic/shunt-current losses, or actual equipment performance?
- How do Chinese systems perform at part load and under variable solar/wind operation?
- What degradation rates have you actually observed?

I went looking for the primary source of a quote that gets repeated constantly, and theattribution is wrong.
The line is from January 20th, that's the day you take office, one year from January 20th, your energy bills will be one half what they are right now, 50 percent, 5-0.'
Nearly every write up sources it to an October 2024 Detroit rally.
The Detroit Economic Club transcript from Oct 10, 2024 does not contain it.
The promises on the record at Saginaw MI (Oct 3), Milwaukee (Oct 1), Reno (Oct 11) and Madison Square Garden (Oct 27). Transcripts are public on Roll Call's Factbase.
While checking, one more: coverage dates last week's grid emergency order toAug 27 and calls it a Wednesday.
Aug 27 was a Thursday, and the Federal Register has Executive Order14421 signed Aug 26.
On the substance, ElA Table 5.3 has the average US residential price at 15.94 cents/kWh in Jan 2025 and 17.45 in Jan 2026. Up 9.5%, against a promised fall of 50%. June 2026 is 18.34.
The part I found most interesting is the reasoning rather than the number.
The promise rested a supply: "we're sitting on more liquid gold than any other country in the world." EO 14421 is a demand-and-hardware document, and it names its own cause: "the rapid growth of advanced manufacturing data centers, artificial intelligence, and defense production."

In a previous post, I suggested battery electric vehicles were a rich man's toy subsidized by government money. I also asserted that sales of battery electric vehicles would drop after the government subsidy was abolished. Was I right or wrong? Are BEV sales increasing or decreasing?
