Mod Post Dealing with the recent uptick in bot spam

TL;DR: We're making spam filtering stricter; regulars shouldn't be affected, but message the mods if your post got caught

Hi folks,

If you're a regular visitor to the sub, you've probably noticed over the past couple of weeks an uptick in bot activity, characterized by low-effort image posts from account names that follow a pattern of feminine-name##. The mods would like to thank those who have reported such posts as spam; once a post receives multiple reports, it will automatically get filtered for review and confirmation of removal.

However, this wave of spam posts is just the latest in a longstanding issue, and trying to permaban these bot accounts is just playing whack-a-mole, since they are likely not all individual users, but part of a broader, consolidated spam effort. In order to help stem this recent wave, we're enabling stricter posting criteria managed by Reddit's internal auto-moderation and safety algorithms. This change will primarily affect new and low community-karma accounts; while regular contributors to the sub should remain unaffected, we expect there may be an increase in false-positive detections.

If you have made a submission, have followed the flair posting rules, and believe that your post has been unjustly filtered (i.e., not made visible to the public), please send a modmail and one of us will try to review as soon as we're able.

We'll revisit this enhanced spam detection policy in a few weeks when the spam wave settles.

Thanks for your understanding!

Mod Post Introducing the r/espresso Coffee Bean Database: a place for people to share—and get recommendations for—beans and brewing recipes

A common question we see on this sub is about coffee bean recommendations—whether it's newcomers just getting into espresso or seasoned home baristas looking for fresh, local offerings. Many of you have also asked for a place to discover brewing recipes for specific beans.

We're happy to announce a new community-driven resource to address these needs! Introducing a platform where people can share the beans they've brewed and the recipes they've used.

How it works:

1. Submit your brews: Share your favorite coffees and brewing parameters using this Google Form. The form collects:

  • Basic details about the beans (roaster, roast date, etc.)
  • Your brewing recipe (e.g., dose, yield, shot time)
  • Equipment used
  • You do not need a Google account to fill out the form and no personal information will be collected.

2. Explore the database: View all submissions in a publicly accessible Google Sheet.

  • Use filters (e.g., Roaster's country, Cost-per-unit-weight) by selecting Data > Create filter view in the toolbar.
  • Note: The spreadsheet is view-only and updates automatically with new submissions. You can download or copy it, but those versions won't receive updates.

Tip: For the best experience, view the spreadsheet on a desktop browser.

Our goal:

We hope this grows into an invaluable resource for the community—a way to share your favourite coffees and provide others with a reference point to kickstart their brews. This is your chance to contribute to (and benefit from) a collaborative coffee knowledge base!

Let us know if you have suggestions for improving the form or the database.

Happy brewing!

General Coffee Chat I can’t be the only one doing this.

After researching freezing beans in reasonable quick use quantities to preserve freshness, this what I’ve come up with. My vacuum sealer extract any excess moisture for freezing (slowing down gas loss) while removing air. Obviously there is a ton of negativity as well as positivity about this but would love my fellow home barista’s on the ground thoughts… please pursue being constructive 😬 but I welcome negative impressions.

To date I have found this successful reducing regular redialing for gas loss. But I’m still evaluating.

Always loved my Kingrinder flavor profile but it was god awful slow at grinding for espresso… gave up and just always made French press with it… got a new drill and went wait I think this fits!

I can grind my espresso’s now too haha. It’s a monster at grinding and the trigger is pressure sensitive so I can go slower or faster.

I’m so happy!

Coffee Station Finally upgraded the setup — Profitec Drive + Mahlkönig E64 WS

Post image

Pretty excited to finally have this setup together.

I started my espresso journey with a Breville Barista Pro and ended up pushing it pretty hard, including using it in my coffee trailer. It definitely had its limitations, but I learned a ton from that machine dialing in shots, troubleshooting, adjusting recipes, and learning how to get the most out of the equipment I had.

It isn't a commercial setup, and I don't consider the Profitec Drive to be a commercial machine either. But for where I'm at, the Drive is the next rung on the ladder and a pretty significant step up from the Barista Pro.

I'm excited to put everything together and see what I can do with it.

I only know how to make this shape right now, tried to do a rosetta but haven't got the hang of it yet. I'm really happy with the texture of the milk, that used to be a problem. Flavorwise it's okay but I'm guessing these beans aren't my favourite ones (light roast from Perú)

Coffee Beans Irish Coffee

Hi all,

Hope this post is allowed

I started a subreddit dedicated to coffee roasted in Ireland 🇮🇪☕

Ireland has an incredible number of excellent independent coffee roasters, but I found there wasn't one dedicated place to discover and discuss them.

I've created r/Irish_Coffee_Roasters as a place to share Irish roasters, review beans, post espresso recipes, brewing setups and discover coffees from around the country.

I'm hoping it can become a useful community for anyone who enjoys supporting Irish coffee roasters. If you're interested, feel free to join and share what you're currently drinking.

I recently wrote another post about how I completely disassembled, cleaned, and refurbished this 2011 Ascaso (featuring a 300ml brass boiler and a thermoblock for steam). I also carried out custom modifications, such as installing the well known steam wand from the Lelit Elizabeth (had to customize my own fitting and threading), custom lcd gauge, switches, leds, made the polished metal effect look like new, and built my own circuit board and code to measure and control temperature and pressure using configurable profiles. All told, the machine and parts cost me around €500. I snagged a Mahlkönig X54 used for a bargain price of about €270. Add in some extra equipment and beans, and the total comes to around €1,000 actually slightly less with the whole coffee machine project taking me about a month. Shots taste perfect, no temp surfing, perfect steamed milk in about 15-max20 seconds, way more powerful than I thought.

Coffee Beans Mini PERC haul came in! 💅

Post image

Just got my order from PERC delivered. First time trying their beans. Now just have to be patient to let them rest for the next two weeks. 🥲

I’m super excited to try the Young Producers for espresso milk drinks. The others will likely stay strictly for pour over, but I might try to dial in the decaf for espresso, too. We will see. 🙃

What PERC beans have you tried and what have been your ratios?

If you live in Denmark, Bean Machine in Esbjerg is the place to get your beans, i lived in this town all my life and, I'm beating myself for not nowing about this place sooner. They roasts beans every Monday, and if you don't have the pleasure of living close to their cafe , they ship to the entire country.

Ps: sorry i couldn't help myself taking a sip of my cortado before taking the picture 🤣

General Coffee Chat Barista breakfast? Milk drink + espresso shot

Post image
Upvotes

I’m working on the roaster at market lane coffee in Prahran and the barista’s always look after me here. I’m always impressed by the staff that work here tbh. I was asked today if I want the barista breakfast which is apparently a milk drink accompanied by another shot of espresso on the side, who would say no to that haha. What’s your ideal barista breakfast? Mine is flat white with an extra shot on the side

General Coffee Chat How many espressos is “too many” in one day?

Post image

I usually stop at 2 because I start feeling like my brain is running on 200% 😂

But every now and then I'll have 3 or 4 and convince myself that tomorrow-me will deal with it.

Where's your limit?

1–2 cups?

3?

4+?

And does it depend on the coffee or how strong it is?

Drinks & Recipes Espresso Negroni

Post image
Upvotes

Saw a reel combining my two favorite drinks, so I had to make it.

Typical Negroni, 1 oz of Campari, gin and sweet vermouth, and a double shot of espresso. Then stir with ice, and used a milk frother to foam it up. Strain and pour over a large ice block and I scooped some foam onto the cocktail. It’s delicious, will definitely be making more of these

Coffee Station Everyone ends up with a lever

Post image
451 Upvotes

After five years of using a Gaggia, I finally pulled the trigger on a (used) Londinium R24. Oh. My. Goodness, I love this thing:

  • It wakes up before me in the morning, so by the time I'm out of bed it's already warmed up and ready to go (and I don't have to temp surf either).
  • The shots this thing pulls are incredible! Even when not fully dialed on, this thing pulls amazing shots, and it'a quite forgiving too. I used to not enjoy straight espresso, but I'm starting to re-evaluate that choice!
  • The hx design means that as soon as I let go of the lever I can start steaming milk - and it has great steam pressure too!

In short, I'm super impressed and happy with the R24. The only downside is needing to use a catch cup since I can't stop the shot early, but that's an insignificant downside to an otherwise perfect machine.

Equipment Discussion Real happy with my new grinder.

Took advantage of the Labor Day sale and got the white Eureka 65 zero AP for what felt like a steal.

I have been very happy with my shardor 64 for the coffee it makes, but it was loud, slow, and messy.

The shardor was running like 85db from my phone app at ear level. Now running like 71db when grinding.

Hoping the chute adapter helps keep the area clean.

What a beauty, and surprisingly quiet. Slower than my previous machine but that doesn’t bother me. I’m mostly grinding for espresso so like the precision/control I get with it.

Espresso Theory & Technique Help with inconsistent espresso shots.

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello, friends. I am a couple of months into making espresso at home. I learned how to dial in my shots and learned how to make them more/less sour and bitter by playing with timing and such. The issue im having is that i feel like my shots are very inconsistent even tho i use the scale and do not touch my grinder after the dial in process. I think a big part of it the way i tamp the puck. I used to do 2 pushes with the tamper i attached. Then i realized that the tamper might not be fully pressing the coffee down so I started using this self leveling tamp followed by the tamp that came in the box with the espresso machine to press it all the way down. Anyways, my shots always come out different with different yields and different times. I have Bambino Plus and DF54. Please help! Thank you in advance

Equipment Discussion New Mahlkönig Xenia Brew-By-Sync Machine

This just hit my email today. Only available in Germany and Denmark with limited distribution for now. I'm considering pairing this with me E64. I have an Elizabeth and this would be a step-up workflow and aesthetic wise. Not priced yet though.

What I still don't understand is how they get around - in this brew, weight, adjust, brew, weight, adjust closed loop system - the recommendation to purge three seconds of grinds to ensure grind size uniformity in the next shot. Seems like it would always be chasing a properly purged shot. Unless the algo adjusts for retention, and retention does not result in channeling.

Buying Advice Needed My Varia VS3 gen 2 killed itself (again). Can't get it fixed so looking for grinder recommendations [~£650]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Tried to record a video my grinder died. Had issues with the VS3 since purchased, and had it replaced once already, but now I'm out of warranty I can't get support without paying more than it's worth and would need to resolder it myself.

I've been looking at the Timemore 078s as a replacement / upgrade for ~£650 but I'm not too up to date with the current generation of grinders (or anything newer than the VS3 Gen 2 tbh) so any suggestions are appreciated.

I drink a lot medium-light roasts, I really like SL28's. Usually espresso for myself, but often make flat whites and latte's for guests.

Equipment Discussion [Various Grinders] How much do you change grinder settings?

So I bought a new grinder earlier this year (the Tuni G3 flat burr from Amazon). This decision came after pretty much always using the finest grind setting on my previous grinder regardless of the coffee I was using. The Tuni has such a wide range of stepless settings and I figured changing from light to medium to dark roasts would result in such a wide range of settings. Instead, I pretty much stick between 5 and 8.

This has gotten me wondering if I'm still doing something wrong somewhere. So my question to you all: How much do you actually adjust your grind setting? Are your changes actually only a size or two, or do you have a much wider range when dialing in and achieving your appropriate setting?

Buying Advice Needed DF54 V5 vs DF64 Gen 2 vs Lagom Mini 2 vs Lagom Casa for daily Espresso / Pour-Over switching (unmodded GCP)? [$550]

Hey everyone, looking for advice on choosing a single grinder for a two-person household using an unmodded Gaggia Classic Pro. We are both novices and have never used a proper grinder.

Our Use Case:

  • Me: Lattes/flat white.
  • Wife: Pour-over.
  • Key requirement: Daily switching back and forth (espresso ↔ pour-over) without losing dial settings, jammed burrs, or heavy retention contamination.

I’m currently choosing between these four options (in the US):

  1. MiiCoffee DF54 – ~$230
  2. Turin DF64 Gen 2 – ~$360
  3. Option-O Lagom Mini 2 – $379 + shipping $64
  4. Option-O Lagom Casa – $526 + shipping $64

For anyone who switches between espresso and filter daily, is the stretch from the DF54 up to the DF64 Gen 2 or the Option-O models (Mini 2 or Casa) worth the money for workflow, dial repeatability, and quality? Thanks!
