It’s a fairly significant piece of the EU’s attempt to make its economy function more like one enormous capital market rather than 27 financial markets awkwardly standing next to each other pretending they’re integrated.
Imagine having €50,000 in savings in Ireland. Instead of that mostly sitting in an Irish bank, the financial system could make it much easier for you to put €10,000 into a diversified EU investment account.
That money might finance a Spanish renewable-energy company, German semiconductor factory, French defence company or Polish technology business.
Multiply that across roughly 450 million Europeans and suddenly Europe has a very large domestic pool of investment capital.
