I wish the UK never left the EU. The EU is so much stronger with the UK in it, and thanks to Trump, I think it would end up with few left wanting to side with the US and the UK likely would have become fully into the EU project. That in turn would have helped pull in Canada, Australia and NZ with closer ties (although I don't see Australia abandoning US military hardware) but with Canada's and Australia's natural resources, and the UKs financial sector the EU could be cushioned a lot better than anything both the US and china could throw at it. I think even SK and Japan would integrate a lot closer and that would be unstoppable. It's a real shame. The investments would be insane

This sort of thing is only happening because the UK left. When we were in, they didn't want a single financial market because it would benefit London.

I think plans for unifying the capital markets started before brexit

We'll be back.

I don't see it happening until the migration crisis in both Europe and the UK is solved. Until then the far right will continue to hold a lot of power unfortunately.

Maybe if Trump actually does something as stupid as invading Greenland or take the Falklands it could be a catalyst for European unity. But I doubt it.

Na the far right will always find a group to demonize. The idea that there is a migration crisis is hogwash to begin with.

The UK had the highest immigration rate in 2023 since the 1950's, even now the illegal immigration rate, so not the total net immigration rate is relatively close in amount to the total net migration rate in 2017-2021. The illegal immigration rate is very similar to the total migration rate per annual from 1975-1995.

This is why the Right have correctly at this point won the argument, the Right wing were once going on about whatever, but facts are they are now just correct. If you had a negative immigration rate of 100,000 a year, bearing in mind the immigration rate from 1975-1995 was less than 100,000, 100,000 is a perfectly reasonable figure, positive or negative, to get back to the same population as 2020, only 6 year ago, would take 23 years. There was a year where 800,000 people were imported...

All while there is the highest youth unemployment rate since the 2008 recession the biggest recession in 100 years. That is caused in part by immigration.

The whole system and country is screw, and part of that is because of immigration, just from an economic point of view. We aren't importing the best and brightest, a lot are unable to speak English, and their education level is below even a basic standard for a modern Western economy, let alone a liberal social country (which of course the right wing are against as well).

From an economic point of view, you guys did the moronic thing called Brexit. But it seems genuine and honest acceptance of this mistake is not going to be allowed politically. The economy goes down the toilet but somehow it's immigration that gets blamed and not the obvious economic amputation called Brexit. Even the immigration situation was made worse by Brexit. Is it completely forgotten how much of a disaster it supposedly was when Eastern Europeans had access to the UK job market?

The UK had the highest immigration rate in 2023

Damn, 2023? Wow. One could've thought things were bad in 2016.

It's sad that Brexit happened and that the UK economy is in the shitter but at the same time I have to say it is mentally such a relief to see the obviously moronic populist right wing policy leading in utter failure. Just like a reasonable person would predict. The same thing applies to Trump, while it's unfortunate he is causing horrible damage. Like imagine if Trump just did fuck all and coasted on Biden's economic recovery and legislative achievements for 4 years. People would think he is a genius.

The Immigration rate in the EU was close to 250,000 a year in 2016, it was 800,000 in 2023. Even 250,00 is too high. People seem to have this ignorant concept that hundreds of thousands of immigrants is normal. Between 1964-2000 the immigration:emigration ratio was pretty neutral, that is what is normal, I am not even arguing for that as I think filling true economic holes and gaining high skilled workers is a good thing if you can, that is not some Ubereats rider on an illegal electric motorcycle, or a Nurse taking a job away from a graduate UK trained individual under the guise they are more qualified, train the person you have then they will be "more qualified", while not putting addition strain on other infrastructure.

I am not arguing for or against the EU, that is not the subject, the subject is, is mass immigration a good thing for the UK or any western economy, Spain is doing a similar thing and is running into similar problems.

Mass immigration isn't getting the best and brightest, it is just taking anyone as a Ponzi scheme to drain some money out of them and prop up asset holders, it isn't a way to run an economy in the first place.

Damn, 2023? Wow. One could've thought things were bad in 2016.

Lucky Brexit or America isn't and wasn't the subject then. I am not against joining the EU. I am against importing unskilled, uneducated, socially unfit economic drains to prop up rich asset holders who refuse to build infrastructure in this country and fund political parties as such.

Total bullshit.

> The whole system and country is screw, and part of that is because of immigration, just from an economic point of view.

More bullshit. Stop with this "I failed at life, I'll blame an immigrant" type shit. It's not going to make your life better.

I just provided statistics on the reality of the situation, your ignorance is just that at this point.

Also I haven't failed in life, I have a professional job and a good career, I don't see why the next generation should have to be competing with a right wing economic system that imports labour to depress their wage rates and opportunities.

There is a million young people in this country who are there to be trained and work, you don't get to claim there is some kind of lack of labour force when that is the case. Graduate nurses in some cases can't ever get roles because an immigrant who is "more qualified" has taken them, on a wage that isn't sustainable to live or buy property, have some kids, and live a life. Let alone in other industries, or taking into account housing costs.

That is called a Ponzi scheme, not an economy.

You don't get to claim the Right wing are ignorant and respond to a response with factual historic statistics with plain ignorance.

A reasonable immigration rate is 100,000 or less, that is reality, and we have already had 2x that quota for this decade, so negative is a reasonable value until then. Many of these individuals are not going to be of economic value while our own native populace of whatever creed and colour are highly educated and can't find opportunities to their education level.

Your statistics aren't the problem per se, although you've provided 0 credible evidence for it. Even assuming they are true, it doesn't for a foundation for your conclusion that immigration is the problem. You say something happened, you gave 0 reasons why it's a problem. It's just your feelings. Also in your latest comment, just more baseless claims and bs.

u/Psyc3 United Kingdom 8h ago edited 8h ago

If you want to have a conversation about the topic should already know the statistics or you are just as ignorant as the Right wing you so protests against.

The Right wing were once whining on about nonsense. Post 2021 that is far from true, the immigration rate as I have just quoted from the statistics is clearly an unsustainable joke, all while many highly skilled postgraduates have been off elsewhere basically since 2008 for one reason on another.

You don't get to claim there is a problem with supply of labour, while a lot of your best and brightest are off for actual opportunities at pay rates often 3x as much in places such as Australia, Switzerland, the USA, the Netherlands, Denmark, even Germany is better paying than the UK by an nonsignificant amount at this point.

The whole time there has been mass immigration in the UK, there has been a claimed "productivity crisis", it is complete BS, there is been active stagnation of wages is what has occurred, to the point there isn't any point in doing anything but leaving the country. Part of that is due to immigration, more supply means a lower equilibrium price point, because that is just a basic concept of economics, which once again you seem to be entirely ignorant of as a concept. If you have 10% more people you need 10% more infrastructure, housing, public services, public transport...literal space...for everything to stay the same, the UK refuses to build basically anything in regard to this, let alone a relevant amount. If they aren't going to, the solution is also just have less people, there is nothing wrong with that approach, there is this deluded concept that "more is better", it just isn't at some level of density.

This isn't to say some immigration isn't important to fill economic gaps, that is very useful, but when you have 981,000 16-24 year olds not in education of training, bearing in mind you have to legally be in education to 18, so many of those are already Graduates, you aren't using immigration to fill essential holes, you are using it to prop up UberEats, and with it Landlords asset prices, while these individuals don't get paid enough to be an economic net gain while putting weight on infrastructure and healthcare, people cost money, the going rate to breakeven in terms of tax the UK with zero kids or a partner is tow is £40K-50K, the average pay rate is around £37K, many of these individuals being brought in are being paid less than this or even when they are just breakeven, what is the point in that to have more people? Often they are a net economic drain on the economy, that is just basic maths.

Buddy, what year is this? Denying data-based facts and calling people names is so 2021 and passé.

Go outside and check for yourself.

I'd like to, but it's debatable, even if so, it won't be in the next 2 years where Trump has given everyone agency. I'd love to do it while the coals are still hot
