My bride agreed to my suggestion to use the Claire Littley version as a wedding dance on the spot the first time she listened to it. Unfortunately, I can only find choreographies on YouTube made with the Frank Sinatra version, which have a whole different feeling.

Did anyone ever heard or have seen Fly me to the moon used in Eva as a wedding dance? I would like to avoid hiring a dance instructor, marriages are already stupid expensive where I live.

This is the second part of my thoughts on the upcoming Evangelion series. The first one focused more on production, the creative team, and realistic expectations. This one goes deeper into what I think is the hardest part of the whole project: the characters.

Again, pure speculation. Nothing official.

The problem with a new protagonist

Creating a new main character for Evangelion is extremely difficult. Shinji is a very specific type of protagonist. He is not a classic coward, even though a lot of people reduce him to that. He runs away several times, but he also comes back. He saves Asuka in the volcano. He refuses to kill the person inside Eva-03. In episode 19 he could have left, but he returns.

He exists in a very narrow space between fear, duty, the desire to be needed, and a deep reluctance to hurt others.

If the new protagonist is made more confident and proactive, he risks becoming a standard mecha lead.

If he is too closed-off and quiet, people will immediately compare him to Rei.

If he feels too similar to Shinji, the reaction will be “they just redrew him.”

That tightrope is one of the biggest creative risks of the entire series.

The old archetypes and why they are hard to reuse

Evangelion is built on a very clear set of character functions: the tsundere (Asuka), the kuudere (Rei), and the damaged, adult, outwardly lively woman (Misato).

These roles are so strongly tied to the identity of the franchise that removing them completely would make the new series feel like something else. At the same time, simply bringing them back in new designs carries its own problems.

The tsundere archetype has become lighter and more comedic in modern anime. Asuka’s version was heavy because her trauma was heavy. Very few later characters have managed that same density. Even Rebuild Asuka felt softer and more functional to many people.

True kuudere protagonists are rare now. When they appear, they are usually in completely different genres. In romance or mecha they often stay underdeveloped.

The Misato-type (adult, sexual, drinking, outwardly energetic, inwardly broken) has also become uncommon. Himeno from Chainsaw Man was one of the more recent examples that actually worked, but she was not given a long arc.

So the new series faces an uncomfortable choice:

reuse the classic functions and risk feeling nostalgic or derivative, or try to reinvent them and risk losing the emotional structure that made Evangelion feel like Evangelion.

Homages vs. direct connections

I personally hope they avoid easy nostalgia traps — no grandchildren of the original pilots, no “Katsuragi protocols,”(I made up an approximate name for this) no heavy-handed name-dropping of old characters.

Visual and situational homages can work. Directly dragging the old cast into a new story (even through mentions or descendants) usually feels like the franchise is unable to let go. If they really want this to be a new chapter, the cleanest way is to start fresh and let the similarities exist only on the level of themes, atmosphere, and directing choices.

Atmosphere, cruelty, and tone

One of the things that made the original series hit so hard was its specific temperature — the sense that something was wrong, dirty, and uncomfortable. The berserk Eva in episode 19 felt genuinely terrifying, not cool. The blood and body horror had weight.

The Rebuilds moved toward a cleaner, more spectacular, and sometimes more heroic presentation. That approach has its own strengths, but it changes the emotional register.

Yoko Taro’s work tends to carry melancholy, cyclical tragedy, and a certain coldness. Combined with Tsurumaki’s more dynamic directing style, the new series could end up somewhere between the psychological discomfort of the original and the larger-scale spectacle of the Rebuilds. Whether that mixture will feel coherent is still an open question.

A quick note on Darling in the Franxx

I bring it up only because CloverWorks was involved and because the series was frequently compared to Evangelion at the time. The first half had energy and strong character moments. The second half lost a lot of people. Zero Two was deliberately designed as a high-fanservice, aggressive, clingy character, and that choice defined much of the show’s identity.

It is a useful reminder of what happens when a production tries to capture a similar mood with younger characters and big emotions, but does not fully stick the landing. The new Evangelion will be judged against a much higher standard.

Final thoughts

I do not think the new series will be a disaster. The brand is too strong and the resources are too serious for a complete failure. Merchandise will almost certainly do well in Japan.

But I also do not expect it to replace the original in most people’s minds. The most likely outcome is a mixed but passionate reception: praise for animation and certain sequences, criticism of the characters or the story, and the inevitable “the original was better.”

The real test will be whether the new protagonists can make us care about them on their own terms, without constantly leaning on the ghosts of Shinji, Asuka, Rei and Misato.

That is the part I am most curious-and most nervous-about.

For the people who own a Rei Chikita, I want to know how do you clean her if she ever got dirty, say like a stain or some of the stuff that got into her, how would you clean her. Maybe with a tap of small towel or you guys just put her in the washing machine and let her dry out

So like the title savs, I sianed up for the Criterion Channel as I heard the same as evervone else, that Neon Genesis Evangelion was to beain streaming there on September 1st, 2026. On a whim, I signed up and put on an episode anc skipped to the credits because I just had to know if they got FMTTM on there. And while I had some hope, it's not on there. Then I started listening to the voices and found them to be the exact same as on Netflix and the Blu Ray, the 2019 dub or whatever it's called. So the Criterion thing, unless it's some sort of initial fluke, is not the OG ADV dub from 1995 and there's no Fly Me To The Moon.

I always wanted to collect Evangelion figures but there are so many options for them and i get a little confused. I'm really looking to start my collection with TV Versions of Eva 01, 02 and 00.

After completing the series, I started looking at content online related to Kaworu, and it seems that quite a few people consider him as an all empathetic character, which I have perceived differently.

Unfortunately he appeared and died in the same episode, which makes it difficult for me to read him that much so I’d like opinions.

Personally I viewed him differently, his empathy targeted towards Shinji, such as the bath scene “You are worthy of my empathy/grace” and later on telling Shinji that he is not the existence which should die when he sacrificed himself and betrayed his purpose. Not to mention Kaworu is still an angel or at least classified as so aside of his body. Considering that he is aware of himself in that sense and the way he behaves. I am not sure about how he experiences emotions though, but I’m open to hearing others opinions.

And I apologize if I misinterpreted things terribly, watching neon genesis evangelion for the first time was a whole confusing experience for me

I had a shower thought about how Neon Genesis Evangelion, despite being a “mecha” anime from the 1990s, has remained so culturally visible for 30 years and still doesn’t seem to be fading.

On the contrary, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (1988–1997), it feels almost invisible today despite being from the same decade and having hidden meaning (even if it has 110 episodes and can get repetitive). 86, which is much newer and shares some themes with Evangelion, seems to have only a fraction of NGE’s cultural reach.

So what actually allowed Evangelion to stay alive for 3 decades and retain its popularity?

Today I decided to write about this.

First of all, a disclaimer: nothing here is official information(besides what we already know, but more on that later). This is just my personal thinking after the announcement and a lot of discussion. Take it as speculation and analysis, nothing more.

I want to start with something Hideaki Anno said-that he wants to turn Evangelion into “a new Gundam.” On paper it sounds ambitious and logical. Gundam has survived for decades by constantly reinventing itself: different timelines, different wars, different protagonists, even completely different settings. It was built as an expandable sandbox from the beginning.

Evangelion was never that. It started as a very personal, closed, almost painful story about specific damaged people. The mecha battles were never the real core-they were the routine these characters were trapped in. The real weight always sat in the relationships, the trauma, and the inability to connect. That makes turning it into a flexible long-running franchise extremely difficult. You can change the rules (Rebuild already did that with Impacts, multiple Adams, new Spears, etc.), but the further you move from those original broken characters and that specific emotional temperature, the more you risk losing what made Evangelion feel like Evangelion in the first place.

What we actually know right now

In February 2026 Khara and CloverWorks announced a brand new Evangelion television series. Yoko Taro is writing the scripts and series composition, Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toko Yatabe are directing, and Keiichi Okabe is composing the music. The only promotional material so far is the atmospheric teaser with the ruined piano and instruments in an overgrown circular pool. No characters, no clear setting, no release window beyond “in production.”

Why the silence feels so long

Six months (unless of course I made a mistake in my calculations) of almost no new information is actually pretty normal at this stage. Big franchises often stay quiet while the script, designs, and early animation are still being locked down. Showing characters too early would immediately trigger a wave of comparisons and backlash. The lack of new footage is more likely calculated restraint than a sign of serious trouble.

Production realities and animation expectations

Note: I am not a professional in the anime industry and production, and perhaps I am not the best analyst.

This is a TV series, not another set of films. That already changes the equation. Even with two studios involved (Khara + CloverWorks), a television schedule usually means resources are spread differently than in the Rebuild movies. Calm scenes will probably have more limited animation, while the big moments and action will get the real budget.

CloverWorks has a strong recent track record with character work and clean visuals, but their comfort zone is more romance and drama than heavy mecha. Khara’s involvement should help keep the quality floor relatively high, especially in key episodes. Realistically we’re looking at something around the level of a strong modern TV production (think Darling in the Franxx or slightly better), not the consistent cinematic density of the Rebuilds.

The creative team – strengths and limits

Disclaimer: I don't know much about Yoko Taro's work or the games, and I haven't played them.

Yoko Taro brings a very particular sensibility: melancholy, cycles, artificial beings, moral ambiguity, and a willingness to be cruel to his characters. The risk is that Evangelion has its own very specific emotional language, and Taro will be working inside an existing franchise with oversight rather than building a world from scratch like he did with NieR.

Kazuya Tsurumaki knows Evangelion from the inside and is excellent at dynamic, kinetic storytelling. That could mean more fluid action and stronger visual set pieces, but it might also pull the series toward spectacle at the expense of the slower, more uncomfortable psychological scenes.

Keiichi Okabe’s music is atmospheric and often haunting, which fits a ruined or post-apocalyptic mood. Whether that sound will feel like classic Evangelion or something more “NieR-like” is still an open question. The teaser track already leaned in a more ethereal, almost fantasy direction.

The biggest risks

The project has to walk a very narrow line. Lean too hard into new characters and a completely fresh setting, and it may feel like it has lost the soul of Evangelion. Stay too close to the old archetypes and structure, and people will call it a cheap copy.

There is also the simple problem of expectations. Anything released under this title will be measured against the original series and End of Evangelion, and those are extremely high bars. Add the fact that the mecha genre itself is not in its strongest period, and the pressure becomes even clearer.

This was the more grounded, production-focused part.

In Part 2 I want to go deeper into the characters themselves-why creating a new protagonist is so difficult, what happened to the classic archetypes (tsundere, kuudere, the Misato-type) and whether simply bringing them back is even enough anymore.
