I grew up as a devoted member of Iglesia Ni Cristo. Both of my parents were born into the church and held positions in the congregation, so religion was a major part of my childhood.
Even when I was young, though, I often felt that something about the world was different. I had strange thoughtsālike maybe I was the only real character and everyone else was an NPC, or maybe we were somehow all connected. At the time, I treated these thoughts like stories in my imagination, the way children create entire worlds in their minds.
As I grew older and lived away from my parents, I started doing things I had been taught were sinfulāpremarital sex, drinking, stealing, and other choices I knew went against what I had been taught. Sometimes I would even wonder, āWhen am I going to be punished?ā
My perspective changed even more after I met my husband and had a profound experience with a psychedelic mushroom. It made me question many of the beliefs and systems I had accepted since childhood.
I began questioning religion, government, education, and the many structures that teach us how we are supposed to live. For me, it became a realization that perhaps we spend so much time following systems, expectations, and distractions that we forget to deeply examine who we are and how connected we are to one another and to nature.
I understand that not everyone will see things the way I do. Some people may even think my experience sounds strange or unbelievable. I can only speak from what I personally experienced and how deeply it changed my perspective.
What I came away with was a strong feeling of connectionāthat beneath all our differences, we share the same humanity.
I hope we can question, learn, understand one another, and live with more compassion.
Sending love to everyone. ā¤ļø
