u/LtButtermilch 2d ago
At least in Germany its still lake Ontario. But we also have the gulf of Mexico

u/BeastMachin09 2d ago
There only showing it as lake of America and gulf of America here in America to please the government

u/Stella-HPVGekko 2d ago
I'm pretty sure it's to please one singular dumbass.

u/BlueBeanYT 1d ago
He can be a wacko a lot of times

u/QuantumFenrir001 1d ago
He does push the limits of everything and find loopholes that need closing so theirs that
37
u/Dijon_Chip 2d ago
In Canada it’s Gulf of Mexico with gulf of America in parenthesis.
Lake Ontario is still Lake Ontario at least.

u/CollectibleHam 2d ago
I don't know if it's because I'm in Alberta but Google Maps shows it as Lake America for me :/

u/sonofseinfeld2 1d ago
Thats interesting. British Columbian here and its showing Lake Ontario
7
u/InsanePacman 1d ago
Same here also in BC. Perhaps its an app update or app vs website
7
u/Snoo63 1d ago
Or political leaning of the region? If Alberta's more likely to support MAGA, then they might be shown it, and if everywhere outside of Alberta is more likely to oppose MAGA, then they might be shown the actual name.
3
u/InsanePacman 1d ago
Interesting, I hadn’t thought of that. You’re damn right that’s a possibility!

It is being shown in Germany as "Lake Ontario (Lake America)" within the description, but the image is still "Lake Ontario". For the Gulf of Mexico, it is showing as "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" in both the description and within the image.

I'm not sure what your point is but Homes is the acronym used for the Great lakes.
Huron Ontario Michigan Erie and Superior.
so shame is a rescramble of that with the a replacing the o

i thought they were making a joke about anti-homeless architecture

You know come to think of it I'm not sure if they teach that acronym outside of the Great lakes region.

Google Maps is a sellout.
52
u/CurrentlyObsolete 2d ago
Google sold out a long time ago right after changing their motto away from "don't be evil".

u/Sunfurian_Zm 1d ago
Google Maps always shows everything as it's legally recognized by the country you are accessing it from. Since some weird old guy with a tad too much legislative power decided to rename it, they are now using it's new legal name when you access it from the US. If you access it from literally anywhere else in the world (or even just change your location in the maps settings) it will say Lake Ontario instead (and you will even get the Gulf of Mexico back).
Google isn't exactly a sellout for this, rather it's simply smart enough to not start fights with superpowers that could destroy their entire business within days.

u/Timmeh-toah 1d ago
Apple Maps still says Lake Ontario. Granted they do also say gulf of amerikkka. 😑
7
1
u/TheBestBoyEverAgain 1d ago
It says "amerikkka" on Apple? You need to report that, that's an insanely bad spelling mistake.

u/I-Am-Uncreative 1d ago
I think that's incredibly stupid, given that that guy doesn't have the power to do that.
2
u/Lordlory95 1d ago
Ofc he has the power lmao, he is an executive order and a pill away from doing whatever the fuck he wants.
Note: I hate this.

Only for Americans I assume. The rest of the world doesn’t care about the childish tantrums of the POTUS.
34
u/Bool_The_End 2d ago
More than half of us don’t give a fuck about this dumb shit either.

u/2PhotoKaz 2d ago
I’m a Canadian currently in San Diego. Everyone is telling us “we are sorry”. Ya, so is the rest of the world. It would make some sense if life in the US was actually great again but it seems to be worse.

Only in the third world uneducated country of US. Nowhere else.

u/MousseHuge8339 1d ago
The current state of things here has gotten very tiresome. And no, we are not better off than 2 odd years ago and in many ways things have gotten much worse. But back to the topic, please be aware that a huge number of us DON'T support these actions.

u/CoyoteMother666 2d ago
Went to check Apple Maps, still Lake Ontario. Then went to check on the Gulf of Mexico and it say Gulf of America 😩
10
u/2PhotoKaz 2d ago
In Apple and Google Maps, both show Lake Ontario for me. They also both show “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”. I’m a Canadian currently in San Diego.

This isn’t new. Google pulls naming data from the GIS. trumps XO ordered the GIS record be updated. The same thing happened with the Gulf of America.
3
u/froction 2d ago
USGS - United States Geological Survey
GIS just means "Geographic Information System," a type of tool used by the USGS and other entities that produce/manage/use maps.
-1
u/20Factorial 2d ago
The XO directs the name change in the GNIS database, not the GIS like I said. The GNIS is what directly feeds the GIS name data.
-1
u/froction 2d ago
The GNIS is a USGS GIS tool.
-1
u/20Factorial 2d ago
Yes it is. And the USGS was not involved in the XO. He didn’t order the USGS to do anything. He ordered the Secretary of the Interior to update the GNIS. Google Maps pulls data from the GIS.

Google maps will show you different names for loads of places depending where you are viewing from.
Its still Lake Ontario to the rest of the world.
11
u/sociofobs 2d ago
Well look at that, when it's trending politics - the cunts update the map promptly. Meanwhile, crucial changes in other countries can be outdated for years.

lol if you hit maps from a us ip it’s lake America and gulf America, if …… anywhere else in the world it’s still got the correct name. I am so embarrassed to be an American these days. We’re well passed pathetic in the level of participation trophy’s these MAGATS are getting for being snowflakes about names. I hope every simp that voted for this gets a Tatoo identifying themselves.
1
u/MousseHuge8339 1d ago
Any ideas on how to get Google Maps to display the correct names for those places (correct being "Gulf of Mexico" and "Lake Ontario") when using GM from a non-rooted Android mobile? I'm figuring I will now have to use a proxy outside of the U.S. to get those names to display properly and avoid the recently introduced errors in naming as I don't think Google will fix the incorrect entries any time soon.

u/ChitownBlake 2d ago
We have been past pathetic for awhile. This shit is Juvenile, but 100 percent plays to his supporters. I wonder if they realize those names go away when he goes away.

It shows both in some location. These corporations will bend over backwards to please politicians rather than taking a stand.
1
u/MousseHuge8339 1d ago
They already lost all principals they had except for the almighty dollar. Don't expect Google or anyone other corp. to stand up.

Of course it does. Google headquarters is in California. They are going to update the US maps anytime the orange Cheeto sneezes in the middle of the name of a long-standing landmark.

Of course, as always, Google obeys His Master's Voice which can be anyone all the way down to someone who got a toy badge out of a cereal box. Kowtowing and toadying to anyone who remotely appears to be authority is what Google does best.

Not sure why I can't post my screenshot here but, mine is still showing Lake Ontario
I live in Ontario

u/TheJerseyDeviI 2d ago
Literally so unnecessary. Not everything needs to be American. As an American, I still call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of Mexico. Not Gulf of America. I hope someone in the future reverses this after he's done running his circus 😒

u/MousseHuge8339 1d ago
And take down all of that gold in the WH! Yikes! Imagine being a staffer and having your eyes assaulted by that garishness during every workday.

u/Sunfurian_Zm 1d ago
Google Maps always shows everything as it's legally recognized by the country you are accessing it from, sometimes even going as far as to show borders differently.
Google isn't exactly at fault for this, rather it's simply smart enough to not start fights with superpowers that could destroy their entire business in matter of days.

u/SeaPhotojournalist73 2d ago
Google Maps generally adds the changes depending on the country. Disputed territories feom other countries are also shown as belonging to that country (if you view Maps as said country. So at least rhey are consistant.

u/NyuxTheDragon-- 2d ago
Only for americans, the same with the gulf of mexico

It depends on the map. Apple still shows Lake Ontario. But they caved on Gulf of America.

This shit reminds me of that dictator of Turkmenistan who changed common words in their language to stuff that he liked, like the word for "bread" to his mother's name. What the shitty cheeto is doing is on the same level of idiocy.

Google is wise to just use "Whatever the USGS says" for maps in the US so that it doesn't have to even consider dumbass political arguments like in exactly this situation.

Orange dude on january 19th 2029: 1000 nukes shall launch to iran and russia and china and send 50 billion dollars to the israeli
-1
u/Icy_Communication262 2d ago
Forgive me if this is wrong but doesn’t tech already censor/manipulate what is seen already and has been for a while. I read something that a lot of Chinas internet is censored. Isn’t this par for the course in what is otherwise, a not so free internet? And yes, renaming the gulf and this lake is incredibly asinine.

u/forayer2 2d ago
In Brazil it's still Lake Ontario, but the Gulf of Mexico have both names (Mexican / American). That's what we get for using USA technology.
