Discussion Fatal Frame 1

Post image

So I wanna preface by saying that I've played Fatal Frame 2 previously and finished it (PS2 version). I decided to go for it first because of it being the most popular FF game. It was a great game, for sure.

But fast forward to a little while ago when I decided to try Fatal Frame 1 for the first time to see what it was about (I had a craving for a classic survival horror experience and realized I haven't played it, or FF3 for that matter); I actually dare say I really prefer FF1 over FF2.

It just feels more intimate, more focused. If that makes sense. Music and ambient is so much more atmospheric than I remember FF2 being. I also remember it feeling like a ghost would pop around every corner in FF2, here they're a little less frequent but more impactful. Maybe I'm just exaggerating how often it happened in my head though, I don't know.

Though of course FF2 is a great game, I guess I just wanna show my appreciation for FF1 and how great it is, despite being less popular and having a lower reception over all.

For your information, FF2 was nerf because people complained about FF1 being too intense and scary. FF1 is notorious for the brutal Night 3 as a huge roadblock for the first time players, you still can see occasional posts about getting stuck at the Night 3 because they run out of resources.

So, while the story of FF2 resonates with more people, you will see people who want a more challenging gameplay preferring FF1.

Wow, I did not about that. I do love all of them, but FF1 is going to be always #1 because I have never played a such scary game before.

Fatal frame 1 is way better and freakier than 2.

Still my favorite, though I vastly prefer the Xbox version

My most recent playthrough wasn’t nearly as hard as the ones I did previously; and I had harder ghost spawns. Wandering Monk was in the room with the Long Hair Woman. But I finished the game with so many more healing items and film, with way less struggle. I don’t feel particularly better at hitting the zero shots so I don’t know why.

I appreciate the...intentionality (?) behind FF1's design. It feels a bit more tighter as a survival horror experience, resource management is much more prevalent, ghosts pose much more of a threat (partially due to the controls) and the exploration is a lot more non-linear.

I love the subsequent games ofc. But FF1 still holds up remarkably well.

I have them equal but 2 edges it out for me

Wish there was an FF1 remake that’d be so cool, better if that keeps its difficulty and intensity of it.

The game is just…really ancient and can have trouble running on newer gen devices.
