Megathread Megathread: Discussion on Netflix's 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing'

As many of you may already be aware, Netflix has recently released a new documentary titled **Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing**. We know that many members of r/fearofflying will have questions, thoughts, and concerns about it, and we've seen understandably seen a large amount of posts being made about this documentary.

To help keep the sub organized and prevent a flood of repeated posts on the same topic, this megathread will serve as the central discussion space for the documentary. Any new standalone posts primarily discussing Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing will be removed and redirected to this megathread.

Ground Rules for This Thread

You're welcome to use this thread to share your thoughts, ask questions, discuss specific claims made in the documentary, or talk about how it may have affected your feelings about flying. Please keep discussions respectful and follow our community rules.

Remember that r/fearofflying is a support-focused community first and foremost. Questions and concerns are welcome, but please avoid unnecessarily sensationalizing aviation accidents or using graphic details that could make anxiety worse for other members. For any potentially triggering details, please be mindful to use the spoiler tag.

No fear-mongering or bad-faith arguments are allowed. Spreading unverified rumors, pushing conspiracy theories, or attacking people will result in comment removal and a possible ban.

A Few Key Reminders

  1. Documentaries are designed to produce a dramatic impact and evoke strong emotional reactions in their viewers. While the investigative reporting covers historical failures, the editing, cinematic framing, tense music, and pacing are specifically crafted to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
  2. The crashes covered in this documentary led to exhaustive scrutiny, and the concerns . The issues with MCAS have long since been resolved, and pilot training related to these incidents waa addressed years ago.
  3. Boeing, the 737 MAX, and the wider global fleet of Boeing planes have safely operated millions of commercial flights without incident in the years since returning to service.

As always, thank you for helping us keep r/fearofflying a safe and organized space. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the mod team.

Question What is this open door near the vertical stabilizer?

Post image

Nervous flyer here! sitting watching the plane I’ll be flying get replenished for our flight and noticed this little door near the vertical stabilizer is open. Can anyone help ease my worry why it’s open? My boarding pass tells me this is a 777-200ER. Three other planes that are the same have gone past without it. I’m so freaking anxious now.

In my last post on this sub, I talked about how my new job can unlock major doors for my family financially and flying needs to be a part of that. This is the first step and I’m just looking for encouragement from the community.

Ive got a program I’m going through to get ready for this flight and I’m ready to do the work.

Support Wanted I’m terrified of a 6-hour flight to Tenerife and I can’t enjoy the fact that I’m going

I’m flying to Tenerife with my husband soon. It’s a 6-hour flight, and instead of being excited about going somewhere beautiful, I am absolutely consumed by anxiety.

Every single night, I literally grieve myself. I look at my children playing, I watch them laughing and doing completely ordinary things, and I suddenly think: What if these are the last memories I’ll ever have with them? What if we don’t come back?

I know how irrational this sounds. I know that flying is incredibly safe. I know that nothing is actually happening right now. But my brain keeps treating this flight like I’m saying goodbye to my children forever.

The worst part is that I’m not even scared only for myself. I keep imagining my children losing us, imagining what would happen to them, and it absolutely destroys me.

I feel like I’m supposed to be excited, packing my bags and looking forward to Tenerife, but instead I’m mentally preparing for my own death every night.

Has anyone experienced anxiety like this before flying? How did you get yourself out of this mindset and actually allow yourself to enjoy the trip?

Tracking Request On my first flight!

Okay, taking off shortly but there’s been lots of delays due to Boston’s runway construction. Please track me! My flight is B6 2184, flying from RDU to BOS. Very nervous but trying to remain calm. Pilot said we’ll be running into some rain when we get there so there may be some bumps.

Support Wanted Flight tomorrow

Hey guys, I successfully flew St John’s (Canada) to Dublin last week and was and am soooo proud of myself.

Tomorrow I’m flying Dublin to Halifax (Canada) and the flight is longer and I’m freaking out a bit. It’s roughly 6 hours. Any words of encouragement are appreciated. I’m so excited to get to Halifax (it’s near my hometown) and know I need to do this to get back across the pond, obviously. Air line professionals, have any of you ever flown out of Dublin? What’s it like? I was at Howth today and watched probably 70-100 planes coming in for a landing.

Anyway. If anyone wants to chat or give me advice, comment here or send me a dm :) chatting with others while flying really helps me get my mind of the fact I’m in an airplane haha

hey everyone! this is my second post actually i wrote one for the flight to brasil now i’m heading back home. I landed and my legs still felt wobbly. but now i have the long flight back to milan and it’s going to be around 11h, i know long intercontinental flight should be better as they flight higher and there are less turbulence, is that right?

but still there is a terrible weather in sao paulo and the sky looks very scary 🥲

Support Wanted Looking for support from fellow Christians

I know this post is going to sound strange, and I've told myself that before. But no matter how hard I try, I can't get this nagging feeling out of my head. Especially given that I'll be going on a trip soon. Hopefully, this post will help.

I'm a strong believer in Christianity, and it's recently led me on an attempt to change for the better. To become less tempted by sin and be a better person. However, I still fall back on old habits after a day or two of trying to change.

And this is coming at a time when I'll be flying soon. I'll be taking a trip I've taken several times before. But no matter how many times I fly on the trip, I always get scared that something will happen. That I'll be the one in a million chance that my flight goes badly. If that were to happen, I feel like it would be a punishment for going back on old habits. That I deserve it.

Like I said, it's a ridiculous fear. However, it's one that I feel each day my trip grows closer. If you want to ignore this post, that's totally fine. But if anyone has any support they can share, I'd sure be grateful.

Support Wanted About to fly and very anxious, could use some advice/ encouragement

Upvotes

Wondering if anyone has felt similar to how I feel while flying and could offer some advice!!

*POSSIBLE TRIGGER AS I TRY TO VOICE MY FEELINGS BUT NOT GET TOO DETAILED! READ WITH CAUTION!*

I have flown so many times in my life. My mom is a flight attendant and sometimes I would fly on up to 3 flights in one day with no issue. some flights being 8 hours. Easy. Last March I suddenly got horribly anxious on a flight that was a little bumpy and it’s never been the same since. Like all of a sudden I feel claustrophobic. I keep thinking how we are so high up. Im now anxious something will happen and I will be in an intense state of panic due to an emergency. It’s almost like I’m more afraid of being afraid than I am of the plane itself. I know planes are safe I know pilots are amazing but I’m still SCARED! I’ve flown 4/5 times since then and each I have cried the whole time with no relief.

I’ve taken various medications under the supervision of my doctor and they had helped calm my body, but not my mind. Some I would fight the drowsiness because my mind would still be on high alert/ boardering a panic attack. I’m about to try Buspirone and hoping to GOD it WORKS because I don’t want to have another 2 sets of 4 hours of pure panic!

I’m flying Friday morning and am just wondering if anyone has any tips/ tricks/ stories of similar feelings/ idk just something to possibly help me with this intense dread I’m feeling.

Possible Trigger New onset

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I ask sorry for my bad English. I don’t know what happened but I’ve developed fer of flying recently.
I’ve took hundreds of flights, but recently (it has been a couple months maybe) I’ve developed this new fear, maybe because I’ve also been exposed to a lot of video crashes in the social media and my feed changed suddenly. I took a flight yesterday and today but I felt terrible. Rationally I know the flight is the safest way to travel, but emotionally I feel really bad and anxious whenever i have to take a flight.

Advice Brand new fear of flying

Hello everybody!

I'm looking for some guidance as I'm a bit lost ij trying to figure out why I've become fearful of flying and what I can do to go back to normal!

I've flown many times and have always enjoyed it, I like looking out the window. I would (and still do) look up the type of planes I see in the airport and what i'll be flying on, I've even lamented that if I didn't have terrible vision I'd have liked to take some flying lessons.

Last year, I was on a flight that had to abort landing twice, I ended up in a totally different country for 24 hours and the flight back was also through storms where we were in a holding pattern for ages before landing. At the time I wasn't at all afraid and was very grateful the pilots and staff got us home is bad weather. After this, I flew twice more and was fine.

My most recent 2 flights in the past month I have been absolutely panicking inside, I have never felt fear like it before. I tried to distract myself, looking out the window also helped. It feels like a very physical and lizard brained reaction.

I worry that there is something horrifically wrong with the plane and nobody has noticed. I then feel worse because it really is a bit mental to think like that. I described it to my partner as it feeling like I'm sitting inside my house scared shitless that it's going to collapse.

Has this happened to anyone else? Has anything helped you? The only thing that I have seen that might have contributed to this is that I am 27? Wtf!

I have 4 flights coming up in the next month, which I won't miss even if I have to sedate myself somehow, but ideally I would like to fly again without fear!

Thank you so much to anyone who offers advice ♡

Advice Flying tomorrow, anxiety is taking over

I’m taking a flight alone tomorrow evening. I haven’t been on a plane in 20 years. It’s only an hour and a half. I’ve been somewhat fine leading up to it but today the anxiety has taken over my body and it’s all I can think about. I’m talking heart racing, that weird cold feeling throughout my body and dry mouth.

I think there’s also a fear of having a panic attack on the flight whilst on my own.

Kind of spiralling, could really do with some tips please 😭

Support Wanted Return flight woes

Hi all - checking back in after my amazing trip to London and Paris… just now ruining my last day of the trip with stress and anxiety about the return flight - AF4. Flight here was smooth and easy and it was nice to have the structure of being able to sleep through… with this one in a bit more nervous because it’s a carrier I don’t know (what if the flight attendants are rude or mean about my fear if I have a panic attack). Anyone have any words of wisdom for me? Thanks!!

Question Pre flight check

I noticed my incoming aircraft did a go around and then I saw both pilots do a walk around the aircraft before departure. Is that normal?

Success! It gets better!

Post image

I used to be great at flying, but later developed a fear. Mostly about a lack of control, and not wanting to lose the life I had built. I've been traveling a lot this past year in preparation for my wedding, and in the past 4 days I've taken 3 flights! I still get nervous on take off and landing, but I'm not shaking or tearing up! Thats a huge win for me.

Here's some things that I do that might help someone else.

1: I saw a post on here a year ago stating that I was an anxious bag of meat with millions of years of threat perception that is incompatible with the modern world. That weirdly has been the biggest help! (If anyone knows the OG post please tag them!!)

2: I think about the idols I love and how they travel all the time. If they can do it, so can I!

3: Started to roll with turbulence. It's gonna happen. It's just jello. Let's jiggle with it!

4: Tippy taps! I tap my shoulders while crossing my arms to calm myself down. Gives me something to do!

I hope you all continue making progress. I still have a ways to go, but we are doing it! Safe travels!
