Newbie FCPX to Pro Tools - Help Needed

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm helping out on a short that is trying to turnover to grade & sound. I've never used FCPX in my life and have limited experience with Resolve. The FCPXML worked on into Resolve and the conform team were able to work with it for grade, but creating an AAF out of that timeline for sound has absolutely not worked.

Do I need X2Pro?

x2pro5 is the most expensive option. i recommend ‘AAFeverything' by u/WholeOwls (runs as an extension inside FCP and gives you a preview and so on). if you feel adventurous, you can also use Resolve to translate into AAF for ProTools for free (can be messy)

I’ve tried Resolve already, what an absolute mess. Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out!

i've been beta testing AAFeverything a lot and it delivered great results. it is also unique due to the direct integration and visual preview. i used to use x2pro but it is pricey with a minimal interface and lots of missing options. but the translation was good. however, it's not up to modern standards even with v5

I've just now found an alternative called fcp2aaf - https://soonus.net/en/#fcp2aaf - with a $9USD price tag for a 3 day license, I'm much more tempted to take a gamble on this! But if it doesn't work out I'll get AAFeverything in a heartbeat. Thanks for the good review & help.

all of these heavily rely on AI, just saying. AAF translation needs handling a lot of edge cases. the website looks the same, the full price is the same, even the UI looks the same. hmm...but let's try it

Yes, the website screams AI to me, and now that I'm using the app, it totally feels vibecoded. Similar to my own vibecoded apps (but I don't sell mine for commercial use). The UI is lacking some sorely obvious features. However - I am on a very tight deadline and out of options. If this works, I will be over the moon.

i know! It's nightmare. there are so many like this. that's why i only recommend AAFeverything, because i know the code is mainly hand-crafted and the developer does not hide himself. you can find his real name and business in the legal footer and copyright/help menues.

x2pro is so expensive because it was 100% hand-made...but that also means the UI and features/options are very limited. you need a lot of knowledge of AAF and ProTools to code a translation. i do not buy any apps that use AI websites or UI anymore. usually not worth it. Too many are just hobbyists playing developer, abandoning the app after a year.

AAF Everything is the way to go - gives you a lot of options for roundtripping not just to Protools, but also Resolve, Premiere, and back again. More robust settings and a very detailed and useful report log with every transfer. And it's half the price of the outdated X2Pro

Whatever converter you land on, the AAF comes out way cleaner if the FCP timeline has audio roles assigned before you export (dialogue / music / effects, subroles if your mixer wants them). Every translator maps roles to tracks, so a flat timeline hands the sound mixer a technically valid mess no matter which tool you buy.

And if the deadline blows up before the AAF cooperates: export role based stems straight out of FCP (Share > Master File > Roles as Separate Files) plus a reference video with burned in timecode. Not elegant, but mixers can absolutely work a short from clean stems and a reference. It ships.
