A couple of snapshots of Flagstaff and the black cat café from around 1940

here are a few interesting photos of early 1940s Flagstaff I have in my collection. They show some early photos of the black cat café, a Route 66 buisness (which is now Karma sushi). There is also a photo of a popular style of Flagstaff home in the ‘30s and ‘40s. If you look around, you can see really similar houses still up downtown today

E-Bikes and Middle School Kids....Good or Bad?

My 12yr old daughter wants an e-bike to ride to friends' houses, soccer practice, and possibly school. We live near the Country Club where there are limited bike lanes, but the speed limit is about 25mph in the neighborhood and about 35-40mph on main roads near the area. I'm worried about the speed of the e-bikes and distracted drivers, but I don't know if I'm being overprotective or just crazy because she already has an e-scooter. Any parents have experience or opinions regarding e-bikes and safety for young teens?

Did anyone see the sky on Saturday night, 8/29, at around 1:15am? Clouds were a distinctly reddish hue despite a bright and clear moon.

I did not even attempt to take a photo, since it would have only captured the bright moon, but the whole sky was the color of a monsoon season sunset. Except...it was the middle of the night. Can't imagine this would have anything to do with the recent "Blood Moon" since that was Thursday. Would the light from any fires nearby be the cause? Certainly didn't seem like it was caused by the city lights (like when, during a snow event, when they reflect off low cloud cover). I was viewing from Chesire, looking toward the observatory, for reference. Anyone else see this or know what might have been going on?

e-Bikes on the AZ Trail/Buffalo Park

Is this no longer prohibited? I walk daily between Ponderosa Pkwy (near the Starbucks), up and around Buffalo Park, and back. I realize that the AZ Trail doesn't loop in until you're up on the Mesa just before the Catholic church, but most of my path is either AZ Trail or the Buffalo Park loop. I thought that e-Bikes were prohibited on both, yet I'm daily passed by them at a high rate of speed on both trails. It used to be occasional, but now it's probably 6-10 at a minimum every single day. If they passed by at pedal bike speed, no worries, but they ZOOM! Is there any way to request enforcement?? I haven't seen obvious signage, so most likely these folks have no idea that they're not permitted. Or maybe they are and I'm not justified in my annoyance. Anybody have any info on whether or not they're still prohibited on those two trails?

How To Quickly Sell Car

I have a sudden problem that hopefully one of y'all can help with. I'll be leaving Flagstaff for Virginia sometime next week. My car, would need to be sold before I leave.

The problem is that I'm not car type person and I have no social media...I have no idea what to charge or how to go about selling it?!?!

Can someone help me with any tips or places that may be able to help? I'm not looking for a lot just enough to be rid of it and give me money for a UHaul.

TLDR Need help selling my car cause I'm clueless with respect to that sort thing and leaving within the next week.

Is there anywhere actually decent to eat in this town that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

Seriously. Since when is mediocre bar food, and food in general in this whole damn town, at minimum $19.00 fucking bucks before tax?

How To Help Feral Kittens?

Thanks to some incompetent (I have other words for them that I will refrain from using for the moment) pet owners up here in Timberline who not only let their cats roam everywhere but decline to get them spayed or neutered, we have 4 or 5 feral kittens in the area.

Does HIgh Country Humane or any other organization do anything in these scenarios? These cats are quite flighty and feral and I suspect would be pretty hard to catch. Not sure how much or how they are getting fed. Don't want them to suffer but also don't want to create a local population explosion which would deploy even more suffering. Plus, winter is coming.

Any suggestions?

What higher-reward jobs would you like to see more of in flagstaff?

After enjoying this thought-provoking thread and even the inevitable critiques of it
https://www.reddit.com/r/Flagstaff/s/7e0BBWDF6H

What jobs do you wish there were more of available in flagstaff, and why?

Backstory 1: I just read the book “Collective Illusions” by Todd Rose, who has also done fascinating podcasts with Mel Robbins, Mike Rowe and others, and would love to hear what you wish for individually vs what you believe your community thinks? I will add more backstory if we get some responses…
My Summary, YMMV:
This post was intended to elicit discussion on IF we want better jobs in flagstaff (some do not) and if so, what would we be willing to do or change both as individuals and as a community. Some discussion devolved into individual criticisms, but my summary by theme:
Backstory 2: The 2023 failed vote for Proposition 480 - the Hospital Relocation. The community rejected an $800m proposal to build a new hospital and community around ft tuthill. Some voices wished it had moved forward and would have addressed overcrowding concerns and generated new jobs, while others expressed doubts of the merits and wished for better community involvement. I did not hear any thoughts yet on how such a plan could be improved for future consideration. Our elected city council who I dont find particularly business friendly did approve the plan, but voters rejected it.

Backstory 3: Datacenters? As the extreme example of changes the community could consider to support job growth, it predictably was rejected here. So what other ideas such as shipping centers would we consider, or do we stick with status quo and just wish more jobs materialized?

Backstory 4: I submitted my own experience for building my career and asked what others were willing to do or change for themselves. I commend those who made personal commitments to pursue jobs in the trades and remote work, it IS possible out there but yes tradeoffs must be made, such as establishing yourself elsewhere first (said several).

In short, I honestly dont feel the community commitment yet to support many new types of jobs. The previous post had good ideas on how the city and county could encourage and improve job growth, but without stronger individual citizen support and push, I just dont see it being any different than the past decade. Thanks to all who contributed constructive feedback! Peace Out.
