Announcement Moderator Message on Steven's Departure
Hello fearless freaks!
The news of Steven's departure from the band this week has understandably been difficult for this community. There's been a lot of speculation and discussion surrounding the reasons behind it, and a lot of blame being thrown in every direction. It also feels like an old wound has been reopened, with a lot of strong feelings from previous band member exits resurfacing as well. I'm not sure what Wayne is planning to post later, but I can imagine it may only stoke the flames further.
As a moderation team, we are not taking sides on this split and encourage continued discussion from all viewpoints. While our aim is usually to keep the vibes positive, it'd be disingenuous for us to pretend this isn't happening and that it doesn't suck. We don't think a megathread is necessary yet, but will be monitoring new posts closely to prevent this topic from overtaking the feed.
We also want to remind everyone of Rule 3: be civil and respectful to others. The last thing we want is for this space to turn into a battleground between different factions of the fanbase. At the end of the day, we're all here because we share a love for the music of The Flaming Lips! Please keep that in mind and be courteous to others.
This rule also applies to how you speak about the band members directly. You are allowed to be critical of band member conduct, but personal attacks, insults, and over-the-line speculation regarding private lives will not be tolerated. It is not the environment we want to cultivate.
Please report any rule-breaking behavior when you see it—we are a small mod team and it will help us out a ton.
This community is usually great about this, but it felt important to reiterate the message as we continue to navigate this transition. To quote A Change At Christmas (Say It Isn't So): "I think its all gonna work out just fine."

Is ‘SpongeBob & Patrick Confront The Psychic Wall Of Energy’ the first recording with Kliph on drums?
This might be a dumb question, but I couldn’t find instrumental credits for this song anywhere. I know he’s in the music video, and it sounds like him, but Ronald & Steven were in the video for Frogs and they didn’t play on that. I don’t know, can anyone answer my question? Thanks!

Discussion What got you into the flaming lips?
I was stationed in Bremerton from 2001 to 2003. I remember riding the ferry into Seattle and seeing a guy singing/ screaming “they punctured my yoke“ at the top of his lungs in the aft end of the boat while everyone else stayed to the forward end (presumably to get away from the guy).
But for me, I recognized the song from somewhere and had to go back to listen. At the end of his song we talked and I asked him “what are you singing?“ I was surprised when he told me. He said there was an open mic night in Seattle and he was going to bring the lips song to sing. If I had a guitar, and could play better than I can now, I probably would’ve joined him.
Over the years I bought a lot of their album. Finally the Punks are Taking Acid, Priest Driven Ambulance, etc. I even thought about moving to Oklahoma just to meet Wayne and the band. Saner heads prevailed, but they’re still one of my favorite bands out there.

They have either been removed or sold out and just got lost in time. Enjoy.

Last year there were quite a few guest performances (notably when Jack White and half the festival lineup joined Ringo Starr for With a Little Help from my Friends), I’m hoping we get to see KM play with the Lips!!!

Audio Just Added: The Flaming Lips, 3 Live shows 1994-95
archive.orgThe Flaming Lips Live at Metro 1995-09-18
The Flaming Lips Live at Double Door 1995-09-17
The Flaming Lips Live at The Blind Pig, Champaign, IL 1994-10-24
Aadam Jacobs (aka the Chicago Tape Guy) recorded more than 10,000 live shows, mostly in the Chicago area. Volunteers are preserving his collection by digitizing and uploading it to the internet archive. These three shows were added just this weekend.
The Blind Pig show appears to be already in circulation (available on YouTube), but I'm not sure about the others.

Discussion I wish there was a Mystics 20 box set like Yoshimi
I know it's not everyone's favorite Lips album but there's some great high points like Sound of Failure, My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion, Vein of Stars etc and also, there's so much B-side material and songs written around that era that it would be nice to have them all in one place. Quite a few of those songs are actually better than what made it on the album. Where Does It End is so amazingly depressing and heartbreaking.
The whole era deserves a reevaluation I feel. Maybe they fear it wouldn't be worth the time, but I still think it's a very good album, just with a few sillier songs like the singles.

Any idea why this awesome track wasn’t played at this awesome concert?
They were at the zoo and had Santas on stage.

I totally licked it a few times to see if it was an LSD blotter. Sadly, it was not.

Picture This album is an underrated classic
I wasn't expecting much from it since it seemed lightweight and some people don't think too highly of it, but I was impressed how much this album harkened back to Yoshimi at such a late point in their career.
It sort of has that whimsical but serious fairy tale vibe that Yoshimi had but maybe a bit more twisted. I really like the cute trip hoppy type songs at the beginning like Giant Baby and How Many Times and then it gets a bit more solemn with the kings death and then once they celebrate his head being dipped in steel and going inside its very emotionally uplifting.
Like Yoshimi it's a very twee album but it deals with serious issues such as a death of a parent or sacrificing your life for the people who love you. I like that approach to storytelling and was surprised that Wayne wanted to make an album like that after all the darker works he did. This one is definitely twisted and trippy like those old fairy tales but it's still got so many positive moments too and like Yoshimi, it's a very cozy album to hear.
