Commodore’s new flip phone!

I have heard of this phone a few weeks ago but I got to actually hold it in gamescom yesterday! It feels very solid and looks great with the transparent shell. It has a headphone jack on the left side.

Supports video calls over WhatsApp, has navigation etc. I am not knowledgeable about the exact technical specifications but it definitely seems like it would be my dream phone.

My family and friends live abroad so we do a lot of video calls over WhatsApp. Having a regular flip phone was difficult because getting WhatsApp to consistently work on a tablet or laptop was a struggle.

I also asked the CTO if there will be any pink version in the future and he said they might consider releasing more colors in the future. I love they are approaching technology differently and I hope we will see more of such devices in the future.
I am also hoping for a comeback of the stick mp3 players as those were the peak design for listening to music.

I know this phone is very expensive compared to other things but I am using a 500€ iPhone with a lot of features I don’t use or even want. Why not spend a similar amount of money to get a phone that fits my needs.

Nokia 2780 Review (after 9 months)

I have been using a Nokia 2780 for over half a year now, and will probably continue to do so until it dies. When I was looking for a flip phone, I had a lot of trouble finding exactly what I wanted. I mused over every option. Eventually, I bought the 2780 because it is cheap and supports Google Maps. I was extremely nervous about it changing my life for the worse, adding unnecessary complications, but it was a quick and easy adjustment. This is not so much of a review as just a few thoughts on how I've adapted to it. But some thoughts like this may have helped me when I was looking for a phone, and I hope it will help you.

TLDR if you don't want to get into the nitty gritty: I've recommended it to a lot of people BUT it's not possible for everyone to adapt to using this phone. As a 24 year old woman artist musician living in a major American city, it makes my life slightly harder, but really not by much, and I'm much happier and honestly chiller. I have relinquished at least a portion of my chronic need for control because this phone is so annoying.

THE PHONE:

  • This is not a well-made phone by any means. It constantly crashes, sometimes the screen just snows out. The alarm glitches, the home screen clock is out of sync randomly, the speaker phone is terrible, email is not accessible even though there's an app for it. You just need to learn to work with it. It's okay when things are glitchy, roll your eyes and move on. It always works out.
  • It is physically fairly durable, but when you drop it the whole thing will come apart. I've been lucky to never drop it in such a way that breaks it, but the old myth about Nokias being indestructible definitely doesn't apply to this baby.
  • It uses T9 texting, which can be frustrating if trying to communicate a complicated or long-winded idea. I call people more now, and also don't respond to texts a lot. But I've gotten very fast at T9. New skill.
  • The camera is great (for me), takes a surprisingly clear photo. I like the old school pixelly look you get from a flip phone camera. If you don't, consider purchasing a camera. The video camera... it is not good. The audio recorder.... it is not good.
  • MMS messages from group chats do come through 98% of the time. I am in lots of group chats, and it can be annoying that you cannot name them, but it's okay. Another bothersome feature is that MMS messages will sometimes send, but you have to download them before a certain date. If you get a lot of texts in a groupchat, you have to individually download the messages from your solo chats with the person who sent them, and then they appear in the groupchat out of order. Well, I rely on a little trick called "wait can someone explain what's going on?" My friends are dear and kind, and they do this for me and I hope yours will do it for you.
  • The Google Maps feature is helpful in a pinch. It's very stripped down, but it does have a good handle on where you are most of the time.
  • The Internet feature is practically unusable, which is great. I've found it helpful when I need to look up quick things like the hours to the library or who won the big game. But it is not really worth using or possible to use for much more than quick questions. Certainly no AI, which is a plus.
  • There is a Youtube feature - I opened it once and it immediately crashed my phone. I forgot about it until writing this review right now.
  • I also use the Podcast app they provide, which works great and has every podcast I could think of on it. You download one episode at a time.

MY SITUATION:

  • I live in a very walkable, bikeable, beautiful, shining city. I rely almost completely on public transit. It's sometimes frustrating to not know when the next bus is coming, but often I can just ask a friend or a stranger to check for me, or I check before I leave wherever I am. Getting places on time is a HUGE stressor for me and one of the reasons I had been waiting to switch - but I have not been more than 5-10 minutes late to work in the past 9 months.
  • I imagine if you have a corporate job, live in a rural area, communicate with family overseas or travel overseas, drive a lot, run a business, things like this, this phone would not be good for you. OR, you'd need to use it in tandem with a smart phone.
  • WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS: My old phone was an iPhone SE that was constantly bugging out. I took the SIM card out of that and placed it in my Nokia. I still own that phone and use it for things like banking, scheduling apps for my jobs, navigation if I'm driving long distances, and occasionally I bring it with me to places like the DMV just in case I need to scan a QR code or quickly access information. Since it doesn't have a SIM, it needs to be connected to wifi in order to operate. Worst case scenario, I can replace the SIM card if I'm doing something like travelling overseas, which I am not. All other components of the iPhone are on lockdown using the app Screen Zen (my absolute favorite screentime app, changed my whole life, honestly if you are considering a flip phone but are afraid, start with Screen Zen).
  • I'm also lucky to own a computer, where I do most of my internet-using if I do use the internet. I try to keep it at my desk, and that works okay for me. Used to be that my screen time was 8 or 9 hours a day, a few years ago. Now, it's at one or two hours, and that's because I have been watching every Werner Herzog movie.
  • MUSIC: When I first got the Nokia, I downloaded some music to it, but the process was arduous and soon I procured an old iPod nano. That served me very well, and then I lost it, and now I don't listen to music when I'm out in the world and I talk to strangers instead, which makes me smile.
  • Otherwise, everything is exactly the same and my life is luckily only like maybe 2% more annoying because I have a flip phone. But it would be so embarrassing, right, if I couldn't handle 2% more hardship, because my life is comparatively really easy. Like compared to all lives that have ever been lived. I think go for it.

Sorry, this post has been rem

Flip phone brand & shop recommendations in the PH market?

Hello. I'm from the Philippines, I've been wanting to own a flip phone again after so long. But I never owned a Japanese brand of flip phones before, and I've been seeing many people are buying these Japanese flip phones, so it kinda urged me to own one again, because I really love the feeling of going back in time with the help of the things we own. So I wanted to ask to anyone here who could recommend what brand I should be looking for if I want good/decent camera, able to listen music, used for text & calls, one that can handle all the usual chill activities but has a long battery life.

Also I would also like to know if you have any recommendations of legit and trusted shops/sellers aside from the ones in the marketplace. I'm kinda skeptical buying from people who doesn't have ample feedbacks or reviews, because I almost got scammed before when I tried buying from a person directly.

Thank you!

Recommendations wanted flip dumb/feature phone

I'm wanting to make the switch to a simple flip phone but I have a few requirements and have been struggling to find options that accommodate my needs during my research. Was hoping someone would know about a good option for me. There's certain features I need for my job and other less important preferences as well.

Necessities

  • whatsapp
  • passable camera
  • physical keys (preferably no touch screen)
  • headphone jack
  • small and narrow (I hate the ones that look like two iPhones stacked on top of each other)
  • decently reliable
  • flip aspect
  • 4G/ 5G
  • no ai

Less important preferences

  • colour options (preferably purple, green, red or blue)
  • some sort of display on the back
  • maps and banking
  • qwerty keyboard
  • no social media
  • raised keys
  • browser of some kind
  • bluetooth
  • prefer more rounded edges, not too rectangle

If anyone knows of any please let me know!! I'm from Australia if that matters at all anything.

Free updated Calendar app for Flip Phones - syncs with Google Calendar

Post image
14 Upvotes

This is a fully DPad navigable native Android calendar app for de-Googled flip phones. The calendar syncs with Google Calendar and no Google Play Services are required.

There are no ads and I don't make any money from the app. The app doesn't share any of your info The full code is available on GitHub at the links below.

This is a simple tool I built for my TCL Flip 2 and thought others might find it useful. This app should work fine on other flip phones as long as they are jailbroken and running AOSP 11.

NOTE This app will not work on flip phones running KaiOS.

You can get the app (APK) here: https://github.com/jevdemon/flip2calendar/releases/tag/v1.1.

To install see here: https://github.com/jevdemon/flip2calendar#installation

Before using the app you’ll need to setup Google OAuth for your account – follow the instructions here: https://github.com/jevdemon/flip2calendar/blob/main/README.md#google-oauth-setup-required

NOTE: If you need to jailbreak your AOSP-based flip phone I suggest consulting one of the many online guides such as this one: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-MIkXxDkNXKJvHGgAItGbsWlFX1xQ2j5q-o0eOtPYNk/mobilebasic and https://github.com/neutronscott/flip2/wiki. These guides are not for flip phones running KaiOS.

I hope someone finds this useful.

Feedback welcome.

Talk &text only tween phone

Im looking into buying my son a phone so I can call him to let him know when Im comming home from an errand and he can call or text when he walking to and from the convenience store or coming back from a school event. We only need call text and no internet

Today I looked at the Debut Flex Cricket flip phone . Is worth buying? Do they hold a charge and have good calling ability? I looked at it in the store but I dont know how hardy it is.

I also looked into the TCL with Verizon but they looked mediocre at best -pieces of garbage at the worst!

I looked at the Kyocera DuraXA but they look so exspensive!

I would like something that can survive my kid being clutzy with it that isnt crazy exspensive.

I dont want to waste money on a phone thats hard to use and dies easy. I personally miss the old slider qwerty keyboards but dont know where to buy them.

Recommendations are much appreciated!

AT-M140 calling problem.

Hello. I have a problem with my mive folder 2. Sometimes iI cannot call or receive calls. I don't know why since sometimes it works other times it doesn't. I have tried calling and getting called from multiple people on different networks and the same thing.

I have Wi-Fi calling on but I don't believe that is the issue. I have looked through all of the settings and I couldn't see the problem. I did research if I could use the phone since I'm in Europe before buying it. Now I'm very confused and I don't know what could be the problem.

Thank you.

hello. i am currently struggling to set up my kyocera digno 902KC.

I'm trying to enter my sim card but it asks me for a PIN to unlock it and it won't let me enter it. acording to this handy manual : https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1835569/Digno-Keitai-3.html?page=29#manual

i should use 9999 as the standard pin at the begining. then press the glob button to confirm. but when i press the glob button nothing happens. it seems i am unable to confirm the pin...

has anybody encountered this problem with this specific flip phone?

i'm from canada and i'm using fizz if that changes anything. i included a photo of the menu it pop up to enter the pin when i boot up the phone with the sim card in it.

I’ve run into a problem: the "matvt" app doesn't work on the Japanese Panasonic P-01J phone due to its Android version. What are the alternatives for using a cursor and controlling the device via hardware buttons instead of the touchscreen?

Looking for a flip phone running open source firmware and Linux

I am looking for a “smarter” flip phone that runs open source firmware and Linux. I would really like to escape the proprietary ecosystems of iOS and Android for my own privacy but still want to be able to do web browsing, emails, discord, etc. I have heard of the commodore callback 8020 which sounds perfect except that it blocks browsers and social media. Is there a way to disable that? Or are there any similar phones?
