New fly fisherman here. I've been doing a deep dive and am taking a fly fishing 101 class at Orvis this month and everyone talks about how the gear is so expensive and you need so much of it but it seems like you could just have a $200 rod and reel, nippers, hemostats, a net and a box of flies and you're good.

Are people just crazy or do I just not get it yet?

Still making imaginary flies but this one might be my favorite so far.

After fishing for steelhead for 18 months with a Spey rod, I finally got my first one on the swing!

Have a leak in the stocking of a fairly new pair of waders on the stocking.
Any tips for repairing?

I will be in Bosnia next week, 5 days in Sarajevo and 3 in Mostar but will have a car. I am looking to go fly fishing on some of the country's beautiful rivers.

My problem is that I don't know (1) what specific spots to go to on the recommended rivers for access, (2) how to get a license and (3) where I can rent any of the gear that I probably won't be able to bring with me on the plane, specifically waders and a net.

Any advice or recommended resources to help me out?

I'm just starting to learn how to fly fish. I've been going with my good buddy with 40+ years experience. We start out and we're walking up river for about 25 minutes, and I catch this awesomely weird fish! My 4th fish ever. My friend couldn't believe his eyes as I guess these are quite rare to catch in Ontario. Hope you all like!

Howdy fly fishing community. I’m a long time backpacker and after finishing the Wind River High Route, passing lots of amazing alpine lakes (and people fishing them) I’ve decided it’s time to add some fishing to my time in the mountains. Only problem is I know absolutely nothing about fishing. I know vaguely what I want out of it though.

I want a lightweight setup for taking way into the mountains to fish streams and alpine lakes. I typically follow the ultralight backpacking philosophy of less is more. I like the idea of catching a fish big enough to have for dinner, but understand that might require a bigger setup, so maybe I’ll have two. I would like to keep things affordable at first before I find out if this hobby is gonna stick around.

I think the big question is Tenkara, Spinning, or Fly. I like the simplicity of tenkara but not sure if it’s super difficult or if I can catch more than tiny fish with it. Fly seems difficult and expensive so maybe that’s for another time. Spinning seems the easiest and most reliable but maybe heavier?

After sorting out that question, I would also love to hear specific recommendations on a setup.

where can I find one? all the ones I see for sale seem freshwater-specific, and I'm worried about corrosion on guides that I've experienced on rods I've owned in the past. don't want to drop a lot of money on a nice, expensive rod if it's not going to hold up

will be using this rod for blind casting in the surf in NorCal (striper, halibut), am not interested in a 9' rod as I greatly appreciate the extra length for longer casting distance, lifting line over breakers, backcasts over steep beaches, lifting power at distance, etc.

also will be using it for kayak fishing in the bay where I also appreciate the extra length

already have a 11' two hander, but really want a single hander for slightly lighter conditions

I bought a raft this summer I got a great deal on and love it, only issue is I don’t have a garage or trailer (yet, working on this). Right now it lives completely disassembled and obviously is a pain to transport and set up each time. I’m very hesitant to store it outdoors, but could protect it with a cover, I just fear the heat might melt the seams of the raft over time. Is the only safe option to stay in a garage? Anyone have success keeping a raft outdoors otherwise?

Has anyone purchased and used their riverquiver shortcut. I’ve been seeing ads for it and I see the appeal of it if you drive a pick up, but does it really save you any time and effort since your still assembling half the rod and untangling the line around the two rod halves. Just looking for input from those who have it and use it! Thanks

Hey yall. I’ve been looking for a pack system to use for both fly and UL spin fishing. This system seems sweet since it has the belt with the net holster in it. I haven’t seen the pro version of this in a minute, so the regular one is what I’m looking at. What has yalls experience been with it? Worth it, or no.

I’ve been slinging the dogwood canyon 9/5 for a couple years now, mostly goofing around my local east coast lakes for panfish and occasionally PA rivers for trout. I upgraded the line to ye old cortland peach and I feel like I’m getting better at hitting my spots without the spagetti disaster (40-50 feet trying to tease them out of brush and lily pads).

I’ve been staring at the echo carbon xl to just move my line and reel to as the next upgrade. Is there something better in the same ~300ish range? I’m going to struggle to get 5-600 past “finance”.

I mostly just throw buggers parachute Adams and a foam spider here and there. Thanks!

This is my personal rod for the fall. It took me a little longer to get done than usual—I had a couple of customer orders I needed to put ahead of it, and I was trying to spend as much time with my kiddo this summer as possible.

Put in a couple of late-night hours to make sure I got it finished.

This is my take on the 206. I modified the taper a bit to give it a slightly more modern action while keeping the character of the original. I also went with a more updated reel-seat locking setup and cork grip.

Really looking forward to getting out there.

I went by a garage sale I found on marketplace on the weekend & heres my haul!

- Ross Gunnison G-5 (with an extra spool) I believe this is the pre 1998 model- any info would be greatly appreciated. I plan on pairing this with my 8wt Loop Z.

- Ross Airius 1.5 reel, cant find much info on it but figured as a ross reel it cant be 1/2 bad.

- 3 cortland GRF 1000 rods, 2 in 5-6 wt and 1 in 6-7wt. I only had my 8wt rod prior, so I thought one of these paired with the Airius would be a good lighter set up.

- a small net, vision lovehandles bag, and a spare reel

All in I paid $150 cad… I think it’s a steal? Would love to hear thoughts & any experiences with the reels or rods, I know they’re a bit older but condition seems good, especially for me just getting into fly fishing.

Ordered a meiser 11ft 8wt highlander cx. Really want to get Abel custom reel. Drag strength is important to me for big kings. Abel rove is the logical choice but idk if I go 7/9 or 9/11. On this rod I’ve read don’t go to heavy.
Abel sds 9/10 seems right but not being fully caged worries me. Although I’m not running mono
