Feedback Needed First time smith

Hi, I'm making a cosmic staff for a Starman cosplay and I've never worked with foam or really done any 3d craft before. I have the general outside form figured out? But I'm really struggling with how I'm supposed to figure out the two inside shapes and the base.

Foamtrooper finally finished

Or as finished as it’s going to get….. the terrible habit of going to the gym means it just doesn’t fit my arms and legs properly, so it’s a bittersweet finish, but glad it’s finally done :)

Work In Progress (WIP) anyone tried this?

Has anyone tried this before? I wanted to give the shield's rim an organic look, so I experimented with toilet paper and white glue, and it created this cool wrinkled texture. What do you guys think?

Question Working further on foamarmour

Hi everybody

I made for the first time a foam armour for a renaissance fair. I had a lot of fun with it. But everyone already heard of the con crunch and time limits. So i couldn't do everything i wanted. The foam is primed with a heatgun and cospaint and then painted with metallic cospaint. No time for any sealer. Now i would like to add many more details before the next fun event.

Now my question is: is it possible to work further without any sanding? Will foamclay still stick to the painted foam with just water? Does anyones have any experience with this? Tips and tricks are all welcome!

Question How to secure small foam bits for painting?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm currently working on foam bits for a glove and theyre quite small. I'm currently using a method I learned from painting gunpla (sticks with blu-tack on them) but the blu tack doesn't adhere that well to the EVA foam so sometimes some pieces just fall/fly off when they get hit with a burst of spray paint.

Is there a better way to keep pieces in place while painting them?

Feedback Needed Question about assembly and possible issues

Hello! I am currently working on a suit for armor for renfaire and im attempting to do a one pauldron setup with a cloak. THE VISION: The cloak will be attached on the underside of said pauldron to the other arm (across the back) and over the other shoulder. (please see attached photo)

QUESTIONS;

How would you recommend i attach the fabric to the foam?

How should i attach the pauldron to the chestplate? I was thinking belts, but if there's anything else that would work please let me know

Is it going to be too much weight? I'm using a light spandex like material for the cloak and maybe some fur for the other shoulder. but i dont know the extent foam can take. the pauldron is 6mm and the chestplate is 10mm (See Second Image)

Any future issues you think i might encounter?

Any Advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to foamsmithing and unsure of the constraints of the medium.

Completed: Helmet, gloves and boots.

Primed: chest, backpack, arms and pauldrons.

Fabrication and details complete: shin and thigh.

The Lights in the helmet are from AliExpress.

I still need to highlight the chainsword and when my new delivery with foam and flexprime comes in, i can get started on fabricating the relic boltgun.

I took on a lot of work with this one. So far I have shoulders, biceps, forearms, gloves, thighs, chest and back about 90% complete.

I still need to make shins, knees, elbows, and the arm-gun plus all the litte details before base coating.

Contact adhesive or contact cement?

I'm trying to make something out of EVA foam and was wondering if there is a difference between contact adhesive or contact cement. Can contact adhesive be used to stick two edges together? And would it hold up for a day?

Question Help for a beginner

Hi, I’m working on my first few foam projects, small pieces of armour (gorget and a pauldron).

I’m having trouble with templates and cutting pieces to be matching/even.

Am I just rushing (impatient to be finished I guess)?
Or is there any points I’m missing that can help make cutting pieces out easier?

Question

So I’m using weldwood contact cement and I’ve been noticing my throat is a little scratchy, so I wondered if my filters on my face respirator were working properly? I have the 3M 60921 Niosh filters and didn’t know if that was exactly what I needed or if I needed to get something better?

Please help! I wanna be responsible as I work!
