Asian Cuisine Winter Laksaturdays : HAPPY CHEF

Hello everyone, it's Laksaturday

This week I chose HAPPY CHEF which has been mentioned a lot on reddit. You enter the building from Chinatown or Sussex Street, up the escalators to the top floor and there's a cute cosy little food court.

I can't believe I didn't go to Sussex St food court more, it's so close to my work. There's cheap delicious looking options, I'll definitely be back here. Thanks for the recommendation reddit.

I went right at 11am and it was really easy to find a seat and order. I imagine it might get busy later.

I ordered the spicy tripe and tendon laksa and the wonton laksa. This was the perfect choice as I got to taste the two broth versions. You also get to choose the noodle type, small egg, rice stick, fresh rice, or large egg.

Extra large for +$4 each. $50 for two bowls.

The shop lady called me darling I kinda like that.

You can scoop yourself the home made condiments including chilli oil, sate, etc. I got little scoops of these for a taste - definitely try these as they are bloody good. I didn't add them to the laksa because I didn't want to change the taste, but i just used them like appetiser

Food came out very quick, only waited 7-8 minutes I think.

The spicy tripe and tendon : wow I really really liked this. The powerful beefy taste permeates the broth, adds a spicy kick and depth of flavour I haven't experienced before. I'm also an offal lover and really enjoyed the Chunky juicy tendon and tripe pieces. AND it has juicy meaty Wontons as well. The Wontons are really impressive, I feel like they are so much meatier and delicious than most frozen Wontons. Maybe they make them too.

Also I normally don't really like the big spongy pieces of tofu I feel like they're kind of tasteless. But for some reason I really liked the ones here. Like soft sponges for the delicious delivery of broth

Tons of toppings, absolutely addictive.

The smoother wonton laksa was just as amazing. The depth of flavour is incredible. The creaminess and saltiness blends perfectly together, Id really like to know the recipe to this broth. The Wontons are plentiful and meaty. Both bowls came out nice and hot, I got a little sweaty even. Was incredibly satisfying.

I would definitely carry a Thermos of these two broths and drink it all day. Only regret is that I chose fresh rice noodle for one bowl and the noodles were quite soft. I still finished it. The small egg noodles were perfection. I might try the large egg noodle as well next time.

I cleared the two bowls, now I was a HAPPY DINER. I was also intrigued by the nutty pho at the next door shop pho vien, and Ken chan curry. I'll absolutely be back for more laksa and other options. You even get a prime high rise view out the dirty windows! Very exclusive kind of dining experience in Sydney.

Location Market St, CBD

Wait 10 mins - Walk-in for lunch

Atmosphere A lively little hidden gem which is tucked away under an office block.

Ordered Yokohama Tonkotsu Shoyu - $21.90

I found this place on a random google search and my god I'm glad that I did!

A fairly plain looking bowl turned up with all the usual suspects - Choy sum, scallions, roast pork and a half ajitama egg. It was a simple bowl presented well.

I took my first taste of the broth and the things that hit me right away were; A deep and complex flavour with a subtle soy note and lingering porkiness from the fat, the seasoning was on point, and it was served at the perfect eating temperature. I ended up slurping about 1/4 of the broth before I started on anything else.

When I finally got to them, I grabbed some noodles, a bit of pork and some scallions. The pork was tender, the noodles had a good chew and the green onion cut through the richness of that fat - A near perfect bite. After going back for more broth I sliced through the egg and devoured it with a bunch more noodles. I tried to take it slow, but quickly smashed the rest of the add-ons before finishing up the broth - This was one of those bowls that was gone in a flash!

Final thoughts A genuine hidden gem! I was there during lunch but the line moved quick. The broth was complex and got me hooked, I'll be back for sure! 4.6⭐

Discussion Charges for 6 month old baby at restaurant

Hi everyone,

I am a first time mum and learning a few things on the fly. I have had a reservation for over a month at a Sydney restaurant for Father's Day this Sunday. It includes 4 adults and I requested for a table which had space for us to have our pram. Our baby has just turned 6 months old and only has bottles. I had explained that our baby was 6 months in the initial dialogue when booking.

The restaurant today has updated my booking to include my baby as a child under 12, charging us $45 for this head count. For context, we will be sitting in their outdoor patio space which has ample seating space.

Is it normal for restaurants to charge for a 6 month old? He will not be partaking in eating any food, hell he won't even be sitting in a high chair.

My first reaction is that this is ridiculous, however is this a normal thing and I just have zero clue? Thanks!

Not sure how new but the biggish restaurant is gone and now it is a new entrance with two new stores. Wine can be purchased by the glass now which is great. After a day of work it is so good to just wander in, quickly find some thing tasty and filling (singapore noodles, beef with fried egg) and a glass of Cab Sav. Not too crowded on a Tuesday but still defs buzzing and on a balmy night like this the lights dangling are just magical for an outdoor dinner for one :)

Japanese How is Zen Zen Sushi's business model legal/acceptable?

Food is acceptable.

Prices are outrageous. However, they are basically always 50% off on eat club and 50% off cash discount

At that price its comparable to most dine in sushi places. But that seems very predatory for people who either dont have cash on them or dont have dining apps

Discussion Are the pizzas at Costco worth it?

Im considering getting the annual membership for Costco. Mainly because I love how massive their pizzas are. Of course I’ll end up buying other things from there.

Does anyone have anything bad to say about their pizzas?

Discussion Recommendations for a slow lunch around CBD?

I'm pretty new to Sydney but all the lunch places I've seen around CBD so far seem to be very much the finish your food and go kind.

Anybody have recommendations for slower and relaxed dining where you can linger a bit after finishing, maybe read a bit of a book, around CBD?

I'm looking for food that isn't east/south east asian in particular, been eating a bit too much of it recently.

Budget is anything under $100 but the cheaper the better of course :)

Food by suburb Lean weekend meals near CBD + surrounds

I like to treat myself to a meal alone on the weekends, usually a late lunch/early dinner

Admittedly i am cutting weight at the moment so indulging in high carbs or super creamy meals arent a priority (dont worry, ill be having my fill overseas)

Anyways budget is ideally under $26, more than happy to stay cheaper as im not exactly a food critic and easily satisfied, just hoping to expand my palette more as i typically stick to asian cuisines

Happy to go anywhere as long as its near public transport really

Look I haven't tried plenty of Mexican spots (~5) but for a halal spot close by this is absolutely delicious. Tried multiple types but nothing compares to the pulled beef tacos from here. Definitely recommend visiting Belmore to try this out and Calvin's crepes for dessert while you're there

Asian Cuisine Old town HK

I'm devastated.

Old town HK Dixon is no more.

For years it was my late night Chinese feed of choice. Where else can you get good peking duck after midnight ?

But as for Chinatown... Old Town gone on one end.. Emperors Garden gone on the other.

I was just starting to get over losing Arisun...

It'll never be the same.

At least for Old Town their barangaroo location still kicking and I plan to go support... Assuming I'm eating before 10pm ..

Discussion On the hunt for local charcoal chicken or fish and chip shops around Sydney

Hey guys! I'm a producer for an AFTRS student film and we're currently trying to search for small charcoal chicken or fish and chip places (or adjacent that can double as such) that have a slightly dated 90s/2000s suburban energy -- or if not, any at all!

The tricky thing is that we need it to be available on a Wednesday or Thursday, and for the store to be closed in the first half of the day until at least 1 or ideally later.

I'm new to Sydney so I thought I'd come to Reddit to see if anyone knew any... Would love to hear about any of your favourite or known obscure little neighbourhood places (or even in centres), thanks! :)

Discussion Italian Bowl (Newtown) wifi always down??

Ik the sub’s general opinion with Italian Bowl, but the location is convenient and it’s a nice option when I don’t wanna think about what to eat.

But it seems like every time I visit, the wifi is always down, prompting us to pay with cash.

I’m guessing the answer is pretty obvious with potential tax evasions and such - But does anyone has any inside scoops as to why/what is happening exactly?

Vietnamese Best chicken pho?

I lived in Toronto the last 6 years and the food scene is pretty strong there as well. One thing I’ve noticed is the pho is prepared very differently over here in comparison. I’ve tried about 10 different places and all use a thicker noodle. I’ve grown very accustomed to the thin noodles I’ve been eating the past 6 years. Apart from that, I’ve been kinda disappointed overall by the quality. There’s one place in Marrickville I could say I give a pass rating but nothing I genuinely love. I can get over the noodle type, despite my preference still being the thinner variety. But Im starting to feel defeated in my search for really good pho. I tried a place in newton that fried the chicken and placed it into the pho!!! I would really appreciate your suggestions

Thanks to this groups recommendations, I had the best Sunday roast today at The welcome hotel in Rozelle. It was by far one of the most delicious meals l've had in a while. We also had the pork which was great too.
Looking forward to trying some of this groups other suggestions.

Japanese The Ramen Chase #11 - Gogyo

I found this place on a google map search and I was really looking forward to it. The restaurant looks really nice and the reviews were pretty good too. Unfortunately though, that's kind of where it stopped.

Once seated, the first noticeable thing was the menu which had some interesting combinations. The tonkotsu came with a seared scallop and gold leaf, which just isn't what I'm looking for in a ramen (before you ask, the online menu differed from the current options, hence that disappointment).

Location: Albion St, Surry Hills

Wait: No wait, as I went straight after work before anyone was rushing in for dinner

Atmosphere: I can't take away the sophisticated feel. There was lots of wood, some soft jazz playing and some traditional Japaense features which made it a very nice place to be.

Ordered: Kogashi Tantan men - $26

It took longer than most places to prepare, however, watching the chef in the kitchen it was fairly evident why. Everything is cooked to order and it was genuinely great to watch how much work was going into each bowl.

Eventually my order was placed over the counter - I snapped a couple of quick photos and went for a smell. The sesame hit me first and it was absolutely to die for. The way it was fried off before the stock was added gave it a smokey hit which really shone through.

I went for my first taste, and the sesame not only smelled great, but was the first thing I tasted too. It was strong, so strong that I didn't get any of the spice for a good 10-15 seconds after. That spice did end up coming through and left my lips feeling warm. The chicken broth meant it was light and there was just the right amount of fat which left me with a nice syrupy mouth feel. On my second mouthful I also picked up some of the onion and coriander and this is where things started to fall apart. While there was a nice initial bite from both the overwhelming flavours meant I could no longer taste anything else, not even after a mouthful of the broth again.

I tried the noodles next, and they were OK. Unfortunately not handmade, but they were cooked well and were plentiful in the bowl. Like the last few places, they were on the thinner side too. I thought I'd try the pork next and this was unfortunately another let down. I grabbed it with my chopsticks to break it apart, but alas, there was no give. I picked it all up and went in for a bite and even that was difficult. While it had some nice char from the flame it was definitely undercooked. I finally tore some off, but it was chewy and not the kind of pork I'm looking for. There were a few scattered pieces of mince in the bowl too, but sadly didn't have the usual spicy bean paste flavour I'm used to when eating a tan tan.

The final hopes were the egg and the add-ons. I was really hoping for something good here but it was another mixed bag. The egg was cooked well and the yolk was soft with easy to split whites. The cabbage, onion and bush of coriander were all a bit strange to me though. The cabbage delivered some crunch, but it was honestly the wrong flavour profile for the dish. As described above the sheer quantity of raw onion and coriander was just too overwhelming and I'm not sure what the lemon was for. I did get through it all, but this was a tough one.

Final thoughts: The menu was confused and it felt like they were trying just a bit too hard. As a result the dish suffered - It wasn't balanced, the flavour profiles didn't work well together and they missed the mark on the protein and the basics. Sadly the lingering onion flavour didn't leave me wanting more. While this place had a nice aesthetic, it's not the place I'd be heading to if you're wanting a more traditional style ramen and probably not somewhere I'd be going back to any time soon. 3.2⭐
