Ford Ranger Buyers Guide; v4!

Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.

Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!

It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!

Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)

From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

Grabbed this 1991 3L V6 from an older gentlemen who didn’t have the time to upkeep anymore. Purchased from his neighbor so confirmed 2 owners with maintenance records from him.

Bummer it’s automatic but I couldn’t pass it up.

E brake was seized and battery was dead so I’ve yet to start it up - gonna run compression tests to confirm the block is good and then fully revive this thing!

I’ll throw a before and after back on the sub once I’m done.

ODO first digit looks pretty straight, pedals and interior also show signs of the mileage being actually 92K. What do yall think?

I decided last week I was gonna get a camper shell. Then I found out that they're getting increasingly harder to find for the stepside bed. Fast forward a week later, checking FB marketplace every day. This one pops up, it was only 20 minutes from my house and in a matching color. I see posts from people driving hundreds of miles just to get one, and it doesn't even match the color. Just feels so good I had to post about it.

My new to me $500 1997 Ford ranger. It had some issues and after $600 in repairs it runs great. It needed a new iac, syncronizer, and camshaft position sensor and now it's running great. It was pretty gross inside and out but after washing and cleaning it she's good as new.

1999 Ford Ranger 4.0 OHV - A/C Condensor Core Insulation

Post image
Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I am having a massive headache with a local shop over my 1999 Ranger 4.0L V6 AC system and really need some community input and pictures.

Originally, my AC wasn't holding pressure. The shop diagnosed it and replaced the evaporator core and the plastic HVAC box. I didn't notice it right away when I picked the truck up, but they completely left off the factory silver foil heat shield blanket—they just threw it out with the old box and left the new aftermarket box as 100% bare black plastic.

Since that repair, the AC works great while I’m moving/driving fast, but the second I sit at a red light or get stuck in traffic, the vents start blowing warm air.

I brought it back to the shop because of this idle issue. They kept diagnosing it and have now replaced both the compressor and the condenser coil, yet the issue remains exactly the same: cold while driving, warm at idle and in traffic.

Now they are guessing it might be a "drain orifice" or a "dryer box," but I strongly suspect the bare plastic box is just getting completely heat-soaked by the passenger-side exhaust manifold when there’s no highway airflow to cool the engine bay down.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is losing that factory heat shield the exact reason it’s failing at idle?

Could anyone with a 1998–2000 4.0L Ranger drop a clear picture of their engine bay showing that silver factory insulation wrapper (Ford Part # XL5Z-19B666-AA) on the passenger firewall? I need solid proof to show the shop manager that this part exists, is necessary, and needs to be replaced with a universal aluminized heat barrier on their dime.

Thanks in advance!

Thinking about doing a 302 swap in my 2003 B3000 - looking for advice

Post image

I’ve got a 2003 Mazda B3000 and I’m thinking about doing a Ford 302 swap. This will be my first swap, and I don’t wanna ruin the truck so I want it to be as simple as I can make it. I’ve read that 98-2001 explorer swaps are the cheapest.

A few questions:
What’s the easiest route: going automatic + EFI or going manual + carb vs EFI? (Trucks a manual right now and I’d like it to stay that way, just don’t know if that’s harder to do)
How difficult is wiring if I stay EFI?
If I go carb, how much of a headache is it to get things like gauges, AC, and accessories working?
What transmission setups are people running with the 302 in these trucks if I go manual?
Rough budget range for a clean, reliable swap?
Biggest unexpected challenges people run into?

Not trying to build anything crazy, just want a solid, fun V8 truck that I can rely on and think itd be a cool first swap to do. Any advice or build threads would help a ton.

2009 Ford Ranger (2.3L engine, 5 speed), Completely Stalled While Driving.

I was driving up a small incline approaching an intersection to yield to make a right turn. I was slowing down from about 45 mph when suddenly before reaching the crest of the incline just before the yield sign, my engine stalled.

I tried cranking the engine but it just wouldn't turn over. Immediately I felt it was a fuel issue. Hazard lights on. Traffic going around me.

Thankfully a police officer pulled up and started diverting traffic and called a tow truck.

While I was waiting for the tow, I read online about the inertia switch (fuel pump shut-off switch). I read that it can be triggered and kill fuel.

I found the red button in the fuse panel at the passenger foot well and my Ranger started up again.

Has this happened to anyone? Seems extremely dangerous if I had been on the highway. I have no idea how it was triggered. Any thoughts for diagnosing?

Thanks.

Someone had put ranger badges on my Mazda but I want to put the b4000 badges back on but they don’t even line up? The pins aren’t even close to where they need to go, anything I can do about that?

vehicle storage

Ive got my ranger that i absolutely love but needs a lot of frame work (what a suprise). I can no longer keep it in the garage and plan on fixing it within the next couple months when im back from college. Im looking for places to keep it while waiting to be fixed. If anyone knows an option for storage that doesnt cost 200$ a month I would love some advice.

Im located in Bridgewater MA and this is sorta my last hope at finding a place.

How do you bypass PATS for a remote start in a 04-11 Ranger?

Seen some posts saying it can be done and a $150 service online to do it by reflashing your ECU but nothing on how to do this. I would really like a DIY remote start.
