Be careful with this, because I reset it two days ago so I could install third-party apps, and the device never told me (I have a Pixel 7 Pro) that I needed to do so (I thought it was automatic), so now I have to go through the process of waiting 24 hours all over again
Yes, I started the process two days ago and thought that, after waiting the mandatory 24 hours, it would either activate automatically or I’d receive a notification asking me to activate it. The thing is, neither of those things happened, and yesterday I had to start the 24-hour waiting period all over again
I managed to do it yesterday, and it turns out they give you 24 hours to accept it, but they never actually tell you when the window opens – you have to keep an eye on the clock to make sure 24 hours have passed, and only then do they let you activate it, accompanied by a couple of threatening messages along the lines of: “Do you know what you’re doing?! Are you sure?! Are you sure?!”
It never said it we'd get a reminder however it did say "return here to check the time remaining" Edit: Either way, they gave us plenty of time to get it enabled.
God, I just want this shit to appear so I can allow unverified apps and move on. Genuinely an awful way considering the Playstore has far more junk. Can't wait to get myself a Motorola or Pixel to start using GrapheneOS.
And there's nothing wrong with that. If your "average person" is so indifferent that their ads aren't worth waiting 24 hours to install another app, then let them have their comfy ads. At least I don't need to suffer that - and I know that my elderly parents are far less likely to be scammed into installing some predatory app.
I write my own custom apps for myself and friends and coworkers. I run Debian Linux at home. In theory, I hate the idea of locking down Android. But in practice, I love it.
I'd bet money that in a few years they remove the ability to install .apk files completely. They are setting the narrative that they are inherently dangerous.
iOS is already this way and MacOS is a major pain to run unsigned applications.

MIUI kinda does it per apps permission though, it's super damn annoying with the warning but atleast it's only 10 second and only applies once per apps, so you could just allow your file manager but not your browser and move on
We should use every easy we can to resist this change including logging complaints through their feedback system, getting politicians involved, switching to alternative OS' and dumpling Android if possible
Harmony os is looking really good without any of this shit google is doing. And sure they might not have the best chips but still really good nonetheless
Have you used an iPhone? The *worst* OS, not even considering the restrictions.
Updates take hours, battery life is horrid, the UI wastes all the gains in performance that the At-home chip gives, any bug in the software can brick parts of your phone, no system-wide ad blockers (that you don't have to renew every once in a while), and good luck getting the thing fixed if you drop it, add on the lack of customization options, and no apps from anything other than what daddy Apple lets you.. I'm good.
