I’ve spent 10 years fuckin’ up my lawn. The bees approve. (Zone 4)

I've been experimenting with this wildlife habitat garden for a couple of years now. The focus is actually incorporating something called sinuous paths into it. These are paths that curve in a way so that they only reveal themselves as you walk along them.

It's meant to be visually alluring to walk through it if that makes sense.

It also attracts animals because they can use the paths as moving cover.

It changes with the seasons. Currently we're in late summer early fall. So the goldenrod is blooming I'm feeding all the honey bees and even monarch butterflies before they fly to Mexico.

I'm planning on reaching out to my state agricultural extension to get monarch caterpillars and or cocoons next year

I also really enjoy the queen Anne's lace silhouette with its slender stems and bulbous umbel and the bright magenta stems of the pokeweed.

It attracts amazing lightning bugs, lots of crickets, white cabbage moths, flocks of American goldfinches, and bunny rabbits. Even some deer every now and then.

The barns pretty much a birdhouse for Barn swallows like to circle me when I am mowing trying to scare me off. I'm going to put an owl habitat in one of the top windows eventually, let it hunt over the field for mice.

Rain gardens!

I want to switch out my traditional lawn for something more native, wildlife friendly, and low maintenance (ie f*ck lawns). I’m in SE WI (zone 6a). I have wood sorrel growing in a couple spots but don’t like how almost invasive it is and I’m not looking to go full wildflower (yet). I came across pussytoes as a native option. Does anyone have experience with it? Thoughts? Suggestions? All advice appreciated.

Any guesses to what we are planting instead of traditional grass?

I do plan on using native plants, but when I saw this at my local nursery, my eyes just couldn’t peel away. This is a black diamond crêpe myrtle. I purchased two because the original buyer backed out of them and the nursery didn’t know what to do with them. I can’t wait to see them grow. 🥰

Got a house. No hoa. Decided make the lawn NO LAWN. Zone 6 A/B ny. Have baby bunnies in the yard. I'm not sleeping. I'm afraid for them. Please tell me what is 'noxious'?

HAPPY EDIT! Guy came by today. We all chatted (he was very nice, just knew nothing about plants. He said that himself.)

We now have an agreement. We will keep the hell strip moderately trimmed, and he's agreed the inner lawn is A-OK!

We explained what we are doing, what things are. He now knows what creeping Charlie is haha. Had to pull up a picture on the web, because we are winning that battle!

He learned a lot today And we are grateful.

In the end, sanity won.

Moral of this story, find someone willing to listen and learn. Hopefully this helps others.

And hopefully I'll have pictures of baby bunnies soon! We showed him the nest, you can see where mama made a decoy tunnel to sneak in for feeding ti.

His approach focuses on what happens to rain after it reaches the ground. Rather than allowing water to quickly run off or disappear, his farming practices aim to help the soil capture and store it.

I have a 40’ x 80’ section of lawn that I plan to rototil and plant wildflowers in the spring. Does it make sense to smother with plastic over the winter to kill the grass and weeds before tilling?

Location: southwest Pennsylvania, zone 7a if that matters.

(Would rather smother with cardboard but finding 3200 sq ft of cardboard boxes and then spreading stuff on them is a huge task)

Hey everyone!

I live in UK and I am fairly new to gardening and have a small/medium patch of grass that gets light foot traffic to cover. I don't want grass, mainly because:

- It's boring

- Area gets almost no sun

- Bad drainange (currently have a bit of moss growing in the area)

I'd like something with a bit of colour if I can, something that is easy to maintain. I don't mind cutting the lawn a few times a summer, but would love something more interesting than grass.

Was looking at creeping jenny, but other redditors suggested it's invasive and I don't want to harm any wildlife.

Any tips?

Many churches have a "stewards of the earth" mindset that aligns well with rewilding efforts. Some churches have acres of excess land they can neither sell nor develop for tax reasons.

If they have a food pantry, talk up the idea of putting in a community vegetable garden or fruiting trees.

Environmental regulators in Texas issued an emergency order on Tuesday evening suspending requirements for the drought-stricken city of Corpus Christi to release water from its reservoir system in support of coastal wetlands.

On the same day, Corpus Christi lifted restrictions on watering lawns that had been in place since 2024, when its reservoirs remained below critical levels until a dramatic rebound in July.

“The city has chosen lawns over the bay,” said Larry McKinney, a former senior director of aquatic resources for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department who lives in Corpus Christi. “Without freshwater inflows, the bay becomes basically a giant sewage treatment pond.”

Regardless, the city opted to lift restrictions limiting automatic sprinkler system use to once weekly, which had been in place since March 2024. 

“Why do we have to let the residents suffer? They want to water their grass,” said City Council member Eric Cantu at a City Council meeting last week. “Let them water their grass.” 

Lawn watering accounts for nearly half of municipal water consumption in the summertime in Texas, according to the Texas Water Resources Institute at Texas A&M University. 

Cantu suggested that restrictions on sprinkler systems were affecting city water sales. 

“Let them use the water so we can get paid,” he said.

At the same time, City Council members described environmental water releases as wasteful, foolish and unlikely to provide meaningful impacts to the bay. State Rep. Denise Villalobos has pledged to permanently repeal the requirement for environmental flows.

I fucking despise roaches they are genuinely the worst creature conjured up from satan’s asshole and yesterday I found one in my bed. Scariest moment of my life. I recently started planting a bunch of natives and the like. Usually I’d have pest control spray around the house and they’re still scheduled for every 3 months or so I think. They’re usually the ones that keep the roaches out of the house but I like the other “pests” however and didn’t know how much the poison would mess them up. For the most part I don’t care much about anything else getting into the house like a spider or anything but roaches need to burn. How can I deal with them?
