My guess is to keep water off the device. It’s a knife sharper and knife block in one.

you got it! its the ninja never dull knives. It actually works decently well for everyday knives. I didn't want water to get into the opening for the sharper since it's next to the sink. I could 3d print a cover but I didn't get around to it yet.

That's what those are! I started to see them pop up at thrift stores and couldn't figure out what it was. Picked one up anyway hoping my cats might play with it. No luck.

coiled my pc power cable for years before i learned it was "dangerous", never even got warm. the stuff people worry about man

Quality power cables should be insulated enough to where that shouldn't be an issue. Extension chords in the otherhand... I still coil them because I don't overload them, but still, cheapos are no good.

I don’t worry about overloading a cable ever because all of our plugs here in the UK have fuses in…

We do too (per circuit/room, but same same), but it's not uncommon for extension cables/power strips to be rated lower than the fuse/house wiring itself, and some cheap ones don't have a built in fuse, so you can literally melt the thing and it wouldn't shut off.

Under the right circumstances you can overheat a coiled cable under load.

This is not stopped by a fuse in the circuit as the load rating of the cable in free air was never exceeded. The fuse in the plug has no way to tell you coiled a cable up under a carpet and plugged in a space heater.

Not because they shouldn't worry about it though. They don't worry because they're entirely ignorant of the potential danger.

This is why people set their houses on fire by running cords under carpets on a regular basis.

You can coil them by folding them in half and doing a loose figure eight coil. It won't eliminate the risk but it's safer.

You can also buy reels rated for the cable to coil it and a sufficient spacing.

But best to just get a cable of appropriate length or leave it fully uncoiled

Thank you!! I bought this exact speaker six months ago and planned to make an identical mount at the time. Twenty other projects have taken precedent since then. You just saved me several hours!

Thanks! STL files are included along with a faceplate test piece - its a good idea to check the fit in your individual outlet as different outlets in my own home have a few mm variance.

Nice, I have a 2 gang version of this I designed for the same Sonos Era 100 perch purpose.

Mine has the duplex outlets though, not decora.

Yes. The risk in coiling wire only exists for high power lines that have the potential to heat up where coiling would inhibit heat dissipation.

Total non-issue. Urban legend type stuff.

What are you worried about. Wouldn’t store a floppy disk near it as you could make a small magnetic field. If cord is good enough there should be no heat issues.

For a coiled wire to make a strong magnet, the current through the wire must all pass in the same direction.

When you have a compound wire like a power cord (whether AC or DC) the current is flowing up one of the wires, and returning through the second in the opposite direction.

This has the effect of canceling out the (vast majority of) the magnetic field.
