I mean, Nicole is hot, but the proxies found her more annoying at that point.
58
u/Rea404 May 02 '26
She probably owes proxy millions of pennies. Being annoyed is the kinda thing they can do
20
u/Amitius May 03 '26
She owed the Random Play around 193,760 store credits, according to one event. But other members of Cunning Hares are also in debt because of her.
16
u/ShinigamiRyan May 03 '26
Joining the Cunning Hares requires going into debt to the Proxies. Sorry, this is non-negotiable. You will not have a positive bank account balance.

u/tannegimaru ZZZ & Endfield May 02 '26
I mean, there was an evil hot woman we know in chapter 1.
But she died a pretty meaningless death in 2.4 imo. And died by an NPC's hand as well. I mean, Shiyuan was an important NPC, but it still just means we never actually get to fight her after over a year of buildup.
Yeah, the 2.5 main boss isn't even actually her. It's just her corpse controlled by the creator at that point. Sarah was such a wasted potential 😞
25
u/DarkenVragon May 03 '26
Sarah's story was insanely all over the place. I still can't believe Isolde was THE top guy of their cult. Like wtf? Your only "big threats" are Isolde and Bringer? How did the cult last that long?
Not to mention in beta leak, Sarah had unreleased CG images delving into her backstory. Iirc it was the one where she were with several children during the fall of Eridu. Not sure why it was cut, but the devs really was done with Sarah at that point.

You can read the "we need to fucking rewrite this immediately, we've written ourselves into a corner" from a mile away on this one.

The Exaltists themselves were really half baked. I thought they were gonna be this overarching antagonist throughout the whole series, but we demolished their whole cult in like a week (game time)

I kind of liked that she was disposable and being used in the end and meeting her fate offscreen kind of highlights that the threat of the creator isn't wound up in Sarah. She was just a tool.

u/tannegimaru ZZZ & Endfield May 03 '26
Huh, that's a fair point made from another perspective on her fate tbh
7
u/bioknight99 May 02 '26
It might be wrong, but wasnt the situation that she hive minded with creator and serves as it's voice?
16
u/tannegimaru ZZZ & Endfield May 02 '26
She was dead after Ye Shiyuan backstabbed her in an attempt to stop the Creator.
That flashback she has is in her dying moment, and then she merges her body with the Creator. Arguably, we don't have proof that her mind actually became part of the Creator, or her mind's gone. But her body at that point is definitely reduced to the Creator's corpse puppet.
41
u/happymudkipz May 02 '26
It looks like we're now getting the "chosen ones" who can deal with the "corruption" trope though.
And you get the amnesia in effect since the Siblings speak almost nothing about their past, even to each other.

u/DepressedTittty May 03 '26
My hopes of uncorrupting the lingering corrupted npcs like pompey and twiggy is once again ignited.
They kind of started mentionning this possibility in lucia's chapter. I wonder if they will actually get to this at some point later in the game
5
u/ShinigamiRyan May 03 '26
It's a very likely possibility among other things. Notably, YSG's childhood flashback you get with the MC makes the Proxy feel something is off. There is also the legend of the Hollows containing a door to the 'past', which seems like a far stretch, until you remember there's an entire cutscene of events that plays out of events that haven't occurred (such as detonating the towers around Hollow Zero).
This is before noting that Ether and Ether corruption seems to resemble how information gets distorted on VHS tapes. There's a good chance that ether corruption may be something akin to people are turned into a sort of data (effectively ether) and ethereals are the result of that (which may explain why Belobog's Constructs have to be exposed to ether to be fully turned online as there may be a connection between the constructs becoming self-aware and exposure to ether that contained people at a point).

Counterside (RIP) is a nice example where this didn't happen.
MC has amnesia from a self-inflicted mind wipe, but there is no meet cute. He goes about manipulating events in the background and orchestrating things like some sort of supervillain. It's great.
63
19
u/ChanceNecessary2455 May 02 '26
So Administrator is already tired of being the mastermind and is now orchestrating the no update aka maintenance mode.
15
u/someonehere234 May 03 '26
He actually closed things off really well & did more than just saving the world in the end. It's one of the best showing of a competent MC until the end, without diminishing the other casts' significance— something that mainstream gachas can't quite capture nowadays.

27
u/xedar3579 May 03 '26
It's kinda peak how they put small lore bits and distinctions between the siblings on cosmetics and they're different depending on which sibling you are. Like there's one banner's description where Belle goes "Wise always lets me win at snowball fights", but if you're Wise it says "Belle's snowballs hurt for some reason so I just give up quickly and let her win".
7
u/YEET_Fenix123 May 05 '26
Even in the most recent patch, the reasoning they give for the amount of snacks in Belle's room is presented differently:
If you're playing as Wise, Belle will tell you that she wanted to throw a party to celebrate the competition.
If your playing as Belle, Wise will tell you that he was planning a surprise specifically for you. (Where he would also invite everyone)
The same idea, essentially, but presented differently enought that you can see how different these two are from eachother.

u/XaeiIsareth May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26
It’s a bit of an awkward situation cos his past and where he came from are obviously pretty big story points about what’s actually happening in the universe and what Teyvat is, so they can’t really tell you until the story gets there.
Especially cos Genshin’s wider story is more cosmic horror than high fantasy and they have to kind make that transition smooth.

By how masterfully the OG Arknights did it, it's not a bad idea by itself. It's the execution that matters.
146
u/Hollownerox May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26
It's also nice because Arknights awknowledges natural problems with being amnesiac like prexisting relationships changed among other things.
Most games that go the amnesia route just go "you might have lost your memory but you're exactly who you used to be "insert name here!" While Arknights sorta does this, mostly in terms of the Doctor's skillset, it was really nice to see the varied reactions of character who knew them. Some were pleased, some feel like they are interacting with a completely different person, and others are outright hostile.
And the cheery on top is the fact pre-amnesia Doctor is relevant to WAY more to the story. Whereas any history for a lot of amnesia MCs is just.... never brought up. Because it's probably a nothing burger.
73
u/Many_Leading1730 May 02 '26
In Limbus as well your character was clearly pretty important and seems to have been a much different person than you are now.
It helps that Dante has a pretty clear personality as well, so they dont fall into blank slate tropes
30
u/Superior_Mirage May 03 '26
Plus it helps that having your head replaced by a clock is a pretty decent excuse for having forgotten some things.
"Where are your memories?"
"Left 'em in my other head."
8
u/Vegetable-Pickle-535 May 03 '26
The Intro of the Game in general is intresting in general, as we don't get Dante waking up with no memories, the first thing that happens is the process of losing said memories and the last remnants of what kind of person Dante was slowly fading out. Probably will get increasingly relevant to look back on the further the Story progresses as well.
4
u/Superior_Mirage May 03 '26 edited May 04 '26

Dante while being an amnesiac, also has their own personality, is curious about the city like us and clearly has some kind of mysterious past to the tree of light plan and it's always been reminded to us once in a while (BHKim interavllo breakout, seeing the stars in canto 5, the animal trio in tutorial...)
51
u/karillith May 02 '26
Which makes very jarring the decision to make another amnesiac for Endfield. Like why putting yourself into the situation of using a similar base situation where comparisons will be unavoidable with a previous work you already done well?
43
u/EtadanikM May 02 '26
Well, theories are that the Endministrator is just a clone of Doctor like how Laevatain is a clone of Surtr. So really it literally is the game retelling the original cast in a shared but alternate universe.
23
u/daniel_22sss May 03 '26
Endministrator just being clone of the Doctor would be the final nail in the coffin of the plot.

u/ArcaneBrocoli May 03 '26
I think the literal only way they could have Endmin and Doc be related is to have Endmin be some creation or apprentice of a kind. If Endmin is Doc or a reconvener it's gonna be so bad.
But we probably won't learn that for years and years because Arknights is still ongoing and I'd like to believe they wouldn't spoil the fate of their previous game like that.
15
u/OrangeIllustrious499 May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26
For this we really need time to judge what they plan to do with Endmin since for now, we dont have an idea of what they are like back then. We only have a clue based on how Ardashir, Andre, Fangyi, Nefarith, etc... acted torwards us which I do appreciate(let's be real, we prob had a double life with Ardashir lol). But it will prob be like the Doctor in that for a loong time, we wont truly know if it's actually good or not until it is revealed.
At least they seem to actually be doing smt with the amnesiac aspect (I even got a bit of surprise that Endmin took some thoughts regarding his relationship when Xi mo and Summit met eachother), so I will at least give some credits for their efforts. Unlike some games I know which dont even use it at all for the story.

i liked it when Arknights did it because the people around you knew you from before your amnesia and theyre all either afraid of you, wary of you, or outright detest you. You're dropped into a leadership role but your main colleague outright hates your guts and thinks youre faking it.
I feel like a lot of the time Amnesia is used without really having the other characters address it beyond "whoa you have no memories and a strange ability? Well, lets just show you around!" In AK its more "Oh hey so you dont remember that time you sacrificed my best friend to complete a mission? No? Fuck you."

everyone goes with amnesia because it's the most straightforward solution to write a self-insert story that can fit everyone. The real problem is the obsession with self-inserts
45
u/Golden-Owl Game Designer with a YouTube hobby May 02 '26
It’s a fast and easy way to solve the exposition issue.
Usually protagonists in a story need some reason to justify having stuff get explained to them.
Classic stories would work around this by having the protagonist be a country bumpkin thrust into a big world (e.g Star Wars, the Hobbit), or introduce them to a whole new world altogether (Harry Potter, Narnia), or have them as a foreigner in a new land (Around the World in 80 days… kinda)
Amnesia is a viable choice.

I know they making him/her amnesiac cause they want players to self-insert, but would be cool to see a game where MC just knows everything and hes the one explaining shit to other ppl, off the top of my head, one of the few gacha that does this is Counterside where MC is basically a mastermind is planning shit 3 moves ahead of everyone or w/e. Technically MC in Eversoul is not amnesiac, he just get isekaid thousands of years into the future so he has no idea wtf is going (but later one we found out her forgot shit from his previous incarnation aka when he banged Ayame, so thats kind of amnesiac?)
