(Global) News Goddess of Victory: Nikke to reduce scale of collaborations
https://x.com/NIKKE_en/status/2093224964459728943
"Plan B will exclude mini-games and 3D fields, feature fewer characters, and include a simplified story similar to an April Fools' Day event."
(They say they'll mostly do just plan B for collabs now)
Looks like even Nikke isn't completely unscathed by the Persona curse.

It’s like walking into a soup store and they have a new limited item that they made in collaboration with the meat store and instead of meaty soup it’s a vegan salad

No no, here's the worst part:
Makoto in P5 literally has a bigger ass. Like, they want to not go overboard on the characters so much they made them less sexy than their actual game appearance which is honestly impressive.

"However, future collaboration events will be divided into two plans: Plan A, which retains the existing large-scale event format, and Plan B, a newly introduced smaller-scale format.
Plan B will exclude mini-games and 3D fields, feature fewer characters, and include a simplified story similar to an April Fools' Day event. Since these collaboration plans will run alongside NIKKE's original events, we expect them to achieve two goals: expanding opportunities to tell NIKKE's stories and giving prospective Commanders who have not yet experienced NIKKE a good opportunity to try the game. Please note that if we determine that a collaboration theme would satisfy a large number of Commanders, we may still use the Plan A format depending on the circumstances."
Tldr: plan B will run alongside other Nikke events, plan A will be used on collabs that have "potential"

Seems like they plan on larger amounts of collaborations but current collab events are too large and costly to fit together with normal nikke events
76
u/TerryWhiteHomeOwner 4d ago
People play Nikke for Nikke and collabs almost always water down what makes the game work (designs and story beats) without adding anything.
It sucks that the team puts so much effort into them (especially this P5 one) but unless you're Nier and have the perfect confluence of horny+transhumanism, they're gonna flop.
35
u/user-766 4d ago
perfect confluence of horny+transhumanism, they're gonna flop.
Evangelion had it, they had 2 chances and they still failed it. They managed to make both stories that doesn't fit either worlds.
Evangelion collab stories were so dogshit that I started nikke because of it and EVEN I a newbie could do a better story fusing both franchise story elements into one.
Even making mistakes in characterizations that goes against the series they are collaborating and writing decisions like removing their memories from previous collab.
And it wasn't lazy at all, they made the assets but instead of doing something cool with it, they made boring slop.
I still can't believe that they never made Misato and Marciana story about sending young people to die and instead just booze lol. Or ignore the fact that Asuka had military training and Rei didn't so she should picked a sniper gun in the first place. They even made Rei fucking fish when she is vegetarian.

Counter argument dave the diver
3
u/Present-Secretary597 1d ago
Except that collab was their base game turned into a mini game instead of full character collab. Also Dave the Diver was released as a collaborative summer events between both games where we get Marciana and Sakura's alt which was a massive success, so not much of a lost. Besides, we played as Aegis squad instead of Dave.
Sure thanks to that it made me bought the game and I enjoyed it a lot, but I wouldn't call it the same level as other collab like CSM, Nier, etc.1
u/Cephalopod_Joe 1d ago
God, that was their best mini game. Got me into actual Dave the Diver and I loved it.

The less nikke does collabs, the better. they ate terrible at it even at their full force, now imagine they half assing it

u/Old-Helicopter1689 Replaying NIKKE rn - OHHH YEAAAH!!! 4d ago
I feel like IPs the game collabed with didn't necessarily fit the vibe of the game itself.
But I personally would have never done collabs tbh.
6
u/Subject_Offer_9621 3d ago
Also Collabs become way less exciting when they do it every other month
Seriously, nikke wasn't even doing that bad, but the collab behavior is like those dying and desperate japanese gacha game that need collab to stay alive another day
2
u/CoomLord69 3d ago
Collabs for the sake of collabs make it feel more cash grabby and immersion-breaking. Like I don't wanna see John Persona running around in a high fantasy game, it feels wrong. Obviously the end goal is to get more eyes (and wallets) on the game, but you can do it without it being completely shameless by at least grabbing other franchises that don't seem completely out of place in your world.

Whats more laughable is that in P5R she may have had a small ass but at least it was really defined.
In Nikke she has the first cutting board ass.
2
u/TheGamerForeverGFE No Saint Quartz? 3d ago
Nah I wouldn't call that small, definitely somewhere within the average but enhanced by latex range.
56
u/GarlicKaraage 4d ago
They said they will still keep the same scale of collab event if they deem the IP worthy enough.
This change is for less important IPs. Its not reducing the scale but inviting more smaller collabs alongside bigger ones.
13
u/Charming-Type1225 4d ago
Its not reducing the scale but inviting more smaller collabs alongside bigger ones.
As long as it's not clearly reducing the amount of collab that the game has, i fail to see that it's a positive change, and rather it could even harm the game in the long run. Even worse if they are allowing less important IP for nikke
A problem with the Nikke collabs are they are simply one of the worst in the whole industry. The story are bad and Nikke's gameplay is too shallow to allow good faithful recreation of the source material.
Now instead of cutting down the amount of the half-assed collab, they now decide that they're pretty much going to make half of them slop and half of them maybe "acceptable", which in turn hurts player immersion even more (which is also a big issue in Nikke).
Since they're pretty much going to half-assed the story, are they also going to half-assed the character kits? Are they going to half-assed the QA for the character that will lead to yet another restart of raids?

Imagine they end up doing a Plan B collab that ends up being more well received than a Plan A collab.
I will laugh my shit off because that will truly show they don’t know what we want.

From what I gather its potentially due to Bayonetta’s Japanese VA passing away a few years ago

don't Nintendo own Bayonetta? doubt they would allow a collab
7
u/planetarial P5X(KR)/IN/Prosekai(JP) Future: Petit Planet/Silent Whispers 3d ago
Sega owns Bayonetta, Nintendo owns the copyright to all the titles they funded (so basically everything except the first game).
SMT Dx2 had a Bayonetta collab but iirc it only references stuff from the first game.

I'm not sure your headline is really a fair summary of what the note says. I read this note as saying "we may do even more collabs than before, but many of them will be smaller in scope, while the current major event structure will be reserved only for collabs we think players will like most."
Also, specifically:
(They say they'll mostly do just plan B for collabs now)
Where do they say this? I don't read anything they said as preferring one or the other. It may end up true that we get more "plan B" collabs but I feel like that's bound to be the case based on volume alone since the whole point is to allow them to do collaborations without committing to a major event. Lots of other gacha do this; since I play it, Wuthering Waves comes to mind as one that ran some small profile collaborations (Sonic, Persona) that just gave cosmetic rewards, and reserved their major event for the Cyberpunk collab.
Honestly, this move makes sense to me. I think the only two collabs that went over well with the playerbase were Nier and Stellar Blade, and the rest have had lukewarm reception at best. It's no coincidence that Nier/Stellar Blade are the most fanservicey IPs and also have a lot of overlap in terms of world and character lore, so they fit in well. This structure lets them focus efforts on collaborations like those that mesh with Nikke and its active playerbase, while allowing for smaller-scale collabs that don't demand as much effort or attention from either the devs or players but can still reap the benefits of casting a wider net and drawing in audiences of different IPs.
4
u/Terrible_Ad6495 4d ago
" Please note that if we determine that a collaboration theme would satisfy a large number of Commanders, we may still use the Plan A format depending on the circumstances."
This implies Plan A will be the exception, not the norm, I believe.
14
u/creveruse Nikke | ZZZ | WuWa 4d ago
Like I said, that might well be true since the nature of the Plan B format means they can and probably will do more of them, but I'm not sure I agree with the interpretation that Plan A collabs will be sidelined (for now). There's a world where they keep the current 2 Plan A collabs per year while adding a bunch of Plan Bs to the mix, in which case they actually scaled up collabs (by adding more).
In the context of the post, that comment reads like a follow-on of the previous paragraph to assure the reader Plan A is still on the cards--I read it like "we will be introducing a new Plan B structure that is smaller in scope, but to be clear, Plan A collabs will still occur."
Regardless, I realize while typing this out that I'm probably being too semantic here. I agree Plan B collabs will probably outnumber Plan A, I'm just saying that seems like it'll be by design rather than an effort to scale down collabs as a whole.
7
u/Anfini 4d ago
I'm an active player and I would roll for the characters for hero collection purposes, but skip all the event story because I just know it's going to be boring slice of life stuff between the Nikke and collab characters. The Stellar Blade collab is probably the only really good one that the game has had, and it's because both games come from the same company.

But also has multi universe shit, they can just create a universe where all the characters are virgin and shit. Also, it’s not like the collab characters will be in the harem. Nikke’s collabs are basically “wow what is this place? Ok bye!”
2
u/Ha-Gorri 4d ago
meh I guess some people could get offended since many of the games in the franchise have it, still many taimanin games may aswell be just female protagonist hentai game, and taimanins collab with many games where they just become part of whatever harem the game has going on, my point is that I'd rather collab with eroges and adult games than whatever sfw anime is popular with a completely different community
2
u/IntelligentWriting47 4d ago
There is dxd, high school of the dead and many other that i cant name, which have heavy fanservice without the ntr part. Its very clear that SU prioritize acquiring new player base over serving their already invested playerbase with these collab, which is why they often just choose whatever the most popular/hyypepd ip. But choosing the likes of taimanin serve neither, that shit is too niche and also it will drive away your own playerbase that loves the ML part of the game
1
u/Ha-Gorri 4d ago
They are reducing collabs because they are a failure so far, the problem with using characters from stablished romance (ecchi and harem) stories is that if you get this schizo about NTR being in a route of the games (literally just pick the taimanins from a vanilla story) then I can also bring up how this is disrespectful for the franchise because commander would be NTRing the protagonists of said franchises and you will get backlash from some of the fans if there was a male in the vicinity at some point. Then there won't be collabs. By the way this did in fact happen with azur lane and idolmaster collab and a bit with the date a live one, also happened between majhong soul and blue archive, which ruined the game reputation in china for a while.
1
u/IntelligentWriting47 4d ago
Are they failure? maybe, i personally dont have the data to claim that it is or not. But what i can say for certain is that i really do hate collabs, it serves nothing for me, they take over 2 event slot where it could be actually be used for nikke own story build up. And i hate it even more when people bring up nonsensical collab idea. Thats all im gonna say, im not in the mood to argue about another gacha game drama
1
u/WuWaCHAD 3d ago
commander would be NTRing the protagonists of said franchises
Its not impossible or unreasonable to work around it. You can have the original MC of those franchise also join the collab, but as NPCs only. Then when the player starts the bond story for the collab characters, have a few lines in Bond 1 to indicate the POV is from the MC from that franchise, not from the Nikke commander. Not really that hard, and I don't think anyone will interpret that as NTR, since the Nikke commander never has any real "bond" with collab characters before anyways (advice session is disabled, and the bonds for existing collab characters already lacks a heavy involvement from the commander, if at all).

u/Charming-Type1225 4d ago
I mean Chainsawman was the highest age rating IP that Nikke has collab with (18+ with some putting as 21) and it's arguably the worst collab the game had.
They also thought it was a good idea to cover makima with the coat.
28
u/Grayman103 4d ago
No the worst was EVA 2. The fact they made players sit through an entire month of only Eva just to turn around months later and go “Guess what guys? MORE EVA!” It was probably the first time the game ever done damage control for how negatively received it was.
5
u/Charming-Type1225 4d ago
Oh yeah the EVA collabs were pretty bad I'm with you there. It's just Nikke just have so many bad collabs it's not east to pick which one is the worst.
My personal pick is still chainsawman. The collab units are ass and simply don't make sense. Why are they not using their powers? They can do creative stuff like scarlet's sword but giving the csm chara just guns with somewhat matching decals. At the very least the eva units are usable
Even the best collab that they have (Stellar Blade) still is rife with problems due to how buggy it was. It exposed how lacking Shift Up's QA team was considering the raid had to be restarted like 3 times. It killed any drive I had to do raids. To this day the QA is still underwhelming

u/Kyubey210 4d ago
I mean Rebuild of Evangelion did feel like it's big enough to be split into more or less Front End (1 and 2) and Back end story wise (those that are left) but still
1
u/Adamantium17 1d ago
The world of Chainsaw man has outlawed guns (IIRC, only watched season1), so just that makes it weird. Why collab with a cover shooter booty anime game if your IP has no guns?
0
u/Fishman465 4d ago
The real issue is CSM isn't a fanservice series and fans have made a sort of imagine of Makina that the Canon self is different than. That said if AL touched on CSM, they'd try to make fanon Makina in all her thicc glory

4
u/Global_Rin NIKKE 3d ago
That’s what Commanders have been telling ShiftUp since forever. They just didn’t listened.
CSM, ReZero, Evagelion, Lycoris…and now Persona.
Of all Nikke’s collabs, only three really stick and receive more positive feedback; Nier Automata, Dave the Diver, and Stellar Blade.
Nier worked because Yoko Taro is a man of culture, and IP has similar vibes to Nikke. Dave because it was a smaller collab, mostly focused on minigame, which tbh, is Nikke one strong trait. Stellar Blade is in house collab.
Hopefully, future collabs will be more on tune with the game itself, and not chasing current trending IPs.

u/Responsible_Fly6276 4d ago
the thing which leaves me puzzled after that text is
Please note that if we determine that a collaboration theme would satisfy a large number of Commanders, we may still use the Plan A format depending on the circumstances.
If they have some metric to guess which collab might satisfy the masses, then why not just do these? I don't understand why one would make a weaker version of a collab just for the sake of it.

Stellar blade and neir makes perfect sense in terms of collabs.
But resident evil? That's a head scratcher honestly.
Also if a gacha exists, is there some written or contractual rule that it has to collab with persona? Cuz I think they've nearly been in every gacha game at this point.
But the again when that happens ppl call it the persona curse and in some cases leads to the gacha eventually EOS.
Clarification needed: how many gachas have EOS after a collab with persona, out of curiosity?

A few, and its happened often enough that its become a meme amongst the gacha community. But quite honestly there's probably alot more gachas that have survived collabing with P5 than most people realize.

They have themselves to blame for constantly doing collabs with franchises that wouldn’t want their characters to be involved in Nikke.
If Shift Up were smart, they would’ve chosen God Eater, Senran Kagura, or Black Lagoon for a Nikke collab.

Great for current fans. Their content is already good, collabs lower it down for sure. Though that can be said about most collabs.

u/RayDaug 4d ago edited 4d ago
This is a good call. The collabs, narratively, are not interesting, and having them take up so much time creates pretty big dead zones.
The requirement for the characters to be The Characters from The Series really holds back anything potentially interesting from happening. The D-Wave stuff is super lame. If the characters can't be made to fit the setting, then just stick them in the simulation room!

u/Grouchy-Chain-7853 4d ago
I knew the Lycoreco collab story was going to be unexpectedly good when they mentioned the D-Wave in passing and immediately moved on to making an actual storyline and engaging interactions between the collab and Nikke characters.
And then they go right back to terrible, uninspired writing for Persona. Felt like half the storyline was just introducing characters to each other (including the Persona characters to each other, since they're from 3 different games).

u/hobozombie 4d ago
Good. Personally, I'm a full-on collab hater. If I wanted to engage with these characters foreign to the game I'm playing, I'd consume whatever media they're from. Usually they're complete FOMO characters, reruns are rare, and their scenarios are a tonal mismatch for whatever game they're guesting in.
→ More replies (5)15
u/VegetableMusician345 4d ago
The problem is that they didn't say there would be fewer collabs, they only mentioned reducing the resources put into them. This means Nikke will have the same number of collabs, but they're going to be even worse than before.
5
u/hobozombie 4d ago
By and large, units are the biggest resource hog for collabs, so if this means just themed skins and little time-limited missions instead of FOMO units, that's a win in my book, I already ignore almost all paid skins in games.
2
u/Middle_Bottom 3d ago
Okay no offense, but shiftup doesn't know what they want to do with most of their collabs for nikke...
2
u/OneDabMan 3d ago
I think the issue with Nikke and collabs is that the collabs often aren’t particularly interesting to Nikke players and people who might be interested in the collabs aren’t interested or are actively disinterested Nikke. So, you kind of have a situation where the collab serves no one.

this is bad, really bad. not only they want to reduce the amount of work put into collabs(mini games, areas, story scenarios even if they are kinda mid), they want to keep releasing collab characters but without the effort put into selling them. lazy fcks. they promised in the newest developer notes that they would double efforts in main scenario quality and events , but who cares about something you are promising a year from now.shift up as a company has been getting on my nerves, with both stellar blade and nikke direction.

I thought they finally understand that making big events for franchise that don't match up with the setting (and also missing lots of fan service) is not a good idea, but it seems they just wanted to push the original story instead and made that change due to workload. Well, whatever.

Yeah, I think the choices they made were bad, even if they make sense due to the sizes of the IP's.
Persona, Re: Zero, Evangelion and Nier are all very basic crossover's. Nothing we haven't seen before in a dozen different games. Chainsaw man is a bit more rare but also did not fit at all to the point of not being able to play as the titular character.
Not everyone liked it, but I think Resident Evil was actually one of the better one's just due to it being a bit more out of the ordinary and giving anime designs of normally realistic characters.
By far the best one was Stellar Blade due to them owning the Ip and being able to make the story cannon within both games. We need more stuff like that. More obscure anime/games that fit the art style and world better.
But there is no point in having a boring 2 part story where nothing happens like what we saw with Persona and Re: Zero.

It makes sense I think out of like all the collabs they did there were one or two that weren’t at minimum nothing burgers, some even disliked a lot. Too many story and design limitations for these collabs that clash with the rest of Nikke. Most people play Nikke for Nikke characters not insert other character from other game here.

Honestly, I don’t think NIKKE is doing anything wrong by collabing with popular anime. If anything, I think these collabs are helping NIKKE become more popular and bringing new players into the game. Not every collab has to be 100% within the same genre.

I know collabs are welcome for any game... But they need to calm down with it.
So far, the only Collab which I enjoyed was with "Stellar Blade" (obviously, SU own IP).
1
u/xiaoguy 3d ago
it's not really the persona curse. most of the collabs were just honestly pretty awful, the persona one was just especially bad because you can tell that Atlus/Sega weren't letting them do anything that you would expect for nikke. i think the only ones that really turned out well were Nier and stellar blade, and one is because yoko taro is happy to do anything, and SB is shift up.

Thank god tbh. This game has always gone so bizarrely hard on collabs. Honestly though I'd prefer the same scale they're at now but less, rather than pared down collabs that barely matter even less than the ones we already get.

Pretty sure they also implied collabs will be more frequent and run alongside other events because of this.
1
u/alexelbdmc Nikke & HSR 4d ago
The developer notes say that aside from large collaborations, they're also going to consider doing smaller collaborations, meaning that apart from the two "big" collabs they do each year, they could add smaller event collaborations(similar to April fool's events)or depending on player reception, turn those into "big" collabs

They didn't say this. They said they'll do big and small collabs instead of just big collabs.

u/Seth-Cypher 2d ago
The problem is the narrative for most of these collabs...just don't really work that well? Like I'm often finding myself going like "Uh...thats great and all but can we just get the next main story chapter already?" At its heart, Nikke is semi-grounded in the way its world works. Involving interdimensional stuff or other worlds simply doesn't work for its kind of story telling.
On top of this, for a game that advertises T&A alot the collabs sure are lacking in this department. The only exceptions seem to be Stellar Blade and Nier.

I guess I'm the wierdo, I actually really like Nikke collabs, and look forward to them. I generally enjoy Plan A events, because I think the maps are fun to explore and full of neat little details. I like that there's a freebie SR to add to the roster, even if I'll never use her.
I don't see any issue with expanding collabs to include plan B events, too. I'm sure there's IPs that couldn't really support a full event, but would be fine for a side story and a single character.
I might be biased a little, I only started playing because of the Eva collaboration, but I think the current style of using collabs to 1) showcase another property, and 2) have an excuse to bring out existing characters again is a good combo, and I hope it keeps up.

Last collab is Persona, censored, flat *ss. Why would player pull for them. Units are quite meta but not exceptionnal and we're close to 60 days to 4th anniversary

Dunno that I would attribute it to the persona curse, I don't think the community has ever taken particularly well to the collabs the game has gotten the entire time.
This collab just broke the camel's back with lower skin sales than ever if I had to guess.
