Does anyone have any solutions or tips for running a ERT survey with high contact resistance in gypsum? I’m using a super sting R8 and my contact resistance is 50k+ upwards of 200k, I’ve tried foil pits, bentonite/salt mixtures, multiple stakes per electrode and a combination of all; but I’m still having trouble getting the contact resistance down.

Hi, good evening. Are there any graduates/students of the IDEA League's Master's in Applied Geophysics here? Could you tell me what the program is like, how housing works, and how easy it is to get a scholarship? Did you find the program satisfying (from the outside, the program seems great!)?

I've seen that the employment opportunities are quite broad, but since it's a Master's in Applied Geosciences, I imagine there's a lot of competition with engineers. Did you end up doing "an engineer's job but paid less/with fewer career prospects because you're not an engineer?"

I'm currently attending a bachelor's degree program in geosciences in Italy (I have a very good GPA, but our program is pretty lousy and there's almost no quantitative content, so I imagine this could put me at a disadvantage in the selection process, even though I'm also doing a research project with a professor), and since I'm interested in working in geotechnics or mining, I thought my best options were to either finish my bachelor's degree and get a prestigious master's degree like this one, or immediately switch to engineering and pursue a master's degree in mining engineering.

I graduated with a BS in aerospace engineering and considering doing a master's in Geophysics, focusing on planetary geophysics.

Is there enough demand in applications such as satellite instrumentation and planetary geophysics? I am scared it is going to be too niche or there is no need for an engineer to know the instrumentation/geoscience behind the satellite's function. It seems like a systems engineer would be more in demand in that case.

Please give me some advice :)

Im in my senior yeat of high school and planning to major in geophysics if I get into my first choice college. I am not sure what I want to do with that degree yet and am still weighing my future options. Is having a masters degree essential to get a good job related to geophysics, or are there good paying and good oppurtnuites without having a masters? Thanks!

I’ve been building OpenMag, an open crowdsourced map for measuring local magnetic field strength at the Earth’s surface.

The basic idea is simple: people around the world take a magnetic field measurement, submit the value in µT along with the location and measurement details, and the readings appear on a shared global map.

The site is now live and working, and I’d like to start building a geographically diverse dataset rather than continuing to test it myself.

If anyone here has access to a magnetometer - professional, handheld, or a phone/device with a usable magnetometer - I’d really appreciate a measurement from your location.

Ideally, measurements should be taken outdoors and away from obvious local magnetic interference such as vehicles, large metal structures, speakers, power equipment, etc. Device information can be included with the submission.

The project is not intended to replace geomagnetic observatories or calibrated scientific datasets. The interesting question is whether a sufficiently large set of timestamped, geographically distributed surface measurements can become useful in its own right.

I’m also working toward confidence scoring, repeat measurements, interference/anomaly detection, and comparison against expected geomagnetic field values.

So we did a fun thing and recorded a concert in the university with geophones and are now analyzing the data (1000-3000 people, outdoors, around 20 triaxial geophones planted in grass in a around the venue (see picture), 500 Hz sample rate, velocity model should be 300-500 m/s).

Our biggest hopes and dreams were separating crowd movements from PA and music but we're still very far from that.

Right now we're trying to detect song starts and BPM using both STALTA and spectral analysis, similar but not exactly like that one Taylor swift concert paper and trying to use song starts to measure correct distance between geophones in hope to locate the major signal sources (stage PA and crowd mass).

1. STALTA results show major time delta between near geophones (scale of 0.05s) and sometimes geophone closer to the stage see the first peak significantly later than further ones. How would you make sense of these results? (sta: 0.1s, lta: 10s)

2.. An open question for anyone interested - how would you go about this? Which tools and algorithms would you use?

1. To detect BPM we tried to autocorrelate single geophone traces checking the lags that match musical bpm (50 - 180 bpm so 0.3 - 1.2s) and locating the highest peak in the range - some songs were a dead match so the studio version bpm, some were half or double and some were wrong, we haven't gone through the meticulous process of using all geophones yet but did find that sometimes the entire spectrum yielded a more accurate result and sometimes focused bands under 50 Hz were best.

2. What is the best way to differentiate PA and crowd-based signals in a rather noisy recording? especially when the crowd was much smaller comparative to previous works in the field (the geophones were also closer in our case).

3. Do you think paved roads between the signal sources and all geophone and terrain height differences between the stage and some geophones are a significant hindrance?

Geophone geometry: before you come for us about the geometry keep in mind that like every good field work, we had some issues with production and the law and had to compromise our array.

Hi everyone. I'm entering Grade 12 soon, and I'm trying to finalize my list of university applications... I adore math and physics, and I took Earth and Space Science last year. I love learning about applied physics, math, geology, and natural disasters. I want a career where I can see the math/physics. Tiny problem though... I don't enjoy being in the outdoors. Love learning about it, love studying it... just don't want to be in it. I would very much prefer an indoor career. I'm not sure if careers in geophysics are indoors or outdoors- or on a case-by-case basis... but I'd love to know 😭 As well, I have never really tried it, but as a concept, I don't think I enjoy coding? However, I'm not sure what coding even entails. Like, what sort of coding do you deal with if you deal with coding? Am I basically just a software developer/programmer, or is it more like using an advanced calculator to build maps?

Also... Do you think it is a worthwhile major, or am I choosing something too niche... like would it be better to major in something broader like pure math/physics, and specialize later? Or is geophysics broad enough on its own...?

Our digging crew just got fined for bursting a water line. Turns out, the 811 ticket wasn't updated and the markings weren't accurate. It's very frustrating because it's an avoidable mistake, but I'm partly to blame because I didn't double check on the ticket before they started working. I think I need a better way of managing our 811 tickets to make sure none of them gets overlooked and all dig sites are properly udpated.

Why does the Sunshine Protection Act attempt to make Daylight Saving Time permanent rather than Standard Time?

At some time in the past, I believe (though my recollection could be wrong) I saw a map that showed that under Standard Time, at 12 noon, the apogee of the sun occurs near the east-west center of most time zones. Under DST, 12 noon happens sooner so the apogee would occur over the eastern part of the time zone where the time is 12 noon (or the western part of the time zone that is adjacent on the east). Of course time zones are a messy concept so this isn't a strong motivator for Standard Time but it's better than nothing.

If my recollection is correct I would appreciate seeing that map again if it can be linked.

Hi everyone, I need some help/opinions, I’m working on a numerical model of mantle convection and tungsten heterogeneity using ASPECT with the goal of reproducing the observational dichotomy described by (Peters et al 2024).

I know how to identify the OIB material using a temperature mask, but I’m not sure how to identify the MORB material. With my current model I can get histograms comparing OIB vs the rest of the mantle. But if I want to compare my model with observations, I would need OIB vs MORB, not OIB vs the rest of the mantle excluding OIB.

Does anyone have any advice on how to define a MORB mask/region in this kind of model?

Hey everyone. So, I've got my Bachelor's in Math, and now I'm diving into a Master's in Geophysics. The thing is, this master's program has a bunch of electives, which means I can actually lean more towards Geophysics or go for Climatology/Meteorology.

I'm kind of stuck though. Climatology theory really grabs my attention, but honestly, I'm more drawn to careers in geophysics. A big reason for that is I'd rather not be stuck behind a desk all day, every day, just crunching numbers and dealing with data.

What's the best approach?

Most climate models are data-driven, but understanding the fundamental dynamics requires theory.

My research focuses on climate dynamics. By studying nonlinear dynamics we do theoretical analysis to understand the earth system better.

Using theoretical and nonlinear methods to reveal underlying mechanisms which helps deepen our understanding of the Earth System.

Every time a crew is racing to start a job, someone "forgets" to run our call before you dig software, and I don't find out until we've already nicked a line and I'm explaining the damage to a client. I need a way to make that step impossible to skip, not just a policy nobody follows under deadline pressure. Right now it's on me to catch it after the fact, and by then it's too late.

So the thing is i noticed a repeating noise within my dataset. At first i just thought it as the vessel noise but after a few adjacent lines, this sort of pattern keep appearing near the same area which made me curious. Need some others perspective on this, does it looks like a possible gas to you guys?

I was looking up some conference papers from 1994-2000 and went to pubs.geoscienceworld.org and found I could download the pdf for free. I remember doing similar 3 years ago, and one had to pay for a lousy 4-page abstract (or hope it was on Scihub). How long have they been free?
