Image post are temporarily disabled

Hey everyone!! We temporarily disabled image posts because we noticed an increase in low-effort image only posts and memes in the community.

We really appreciate how active everyone has been but we also want to encourage more meaningful discussions, study tips, study related questions and other contents that can actually help everyone in this community. For now, we’re disabling image posts to help shift the focus back toward those kinds of discussions

This is not a permanent decision. We’ll keep this change for now and discuss it further over next week. After that, we’ll review the community’s feedback and decide whether image posts should be brought back or if any changes are needed.

Thanks for understanding! Feel free to send us a modmail if you have any suggestions on how we can improve the sub. Your feedback is always welcome.

Other Day 1 | Starting Again

Day 1 | Starting Again

It’s been almost two years since I last studied seriously.

For those two years, I was preparing for a competitive exam, but things didn’t go the way I wanted. Now I’m starting again, from the basics.

I’m not going to pretend I have everything figured out. I’ll study, make mistakes, waste some time, get back on track, and keep going.

Starting today, I’ll be documenting this journey every day, what I studied, what I struggled with, and how I’m preparing.

Day 1 starts today.

Question I can't sit down to study for more than 20 minutes. How can this be overcome?

Honestly, I always thought that writing a post about yourself and your problems would be pretty simple and straightforward, but now I’m not so sure. I’m 16—turning 17 soon—and I’m a second-year student in a technical program. The academic year has barely started, yet I already feel like I can’t keep up with my classmates. This summer, I realized that I don't actually know most of the material I’m supposed to know.

Take basic mathematics as an example. I don't know it as well as I should. Realizing this, I made several attempts to start studying math, but they all failed for some reason I can't quite pinpoint. As soon as I sit down to study and start writing things down, barely 20 minutes pass before I find myself doing something else entirely. I even tried a mini-ritual just to get started, but that didn't help either.

I’d appreciate any advice or tips. Apologies in advance for my clunky English; this was translated using a google translator.

Other Day 1: 45 Minutes After Two Years

First day of studying after two years.

I studied for 45 minutes today. It might not sound like much, but after such a long break, I’m happy I started.

For now, I’m going to focus on adding a few more minutes each day instead of forcing myself to study for hours right away.

The goal is to gradually reach 6 hours of study every day.

Day 1: 45 minutes.

Let’s see how far I can take this.

Question I finally start taking studies seriously

The biggest change came in my life is that nobody will tell me to study anymore and now I study myself as I realised how important it is. Now there is no such kind of pressure. Just my decisions in my studies. Honestly, it feels good.

Does anyone of you feel same?

Question 15 days until exam that I have barely studied for yet

I really need some constructive advice on how to tackle this exam. It´s a retake of pharmaceutical drug analytics and I basically wasted a month due to fatigue and procrastination. I seriously need to pass this exam to finally enter the lab for it. I know that I need to focus on understanding concepts and practicing questions, but at the moment I´m just scared and panicking, since chemistry related subjects are my weak points. I have managed exams in less time than that, but the questions on this exam tend to be unpredictable and there isn´t much explanation online or even in the material. I´m overwhelmed and constantly tired and would really appreciate some realistic input.

Question How do I study maths when I find it painfully boring?

Upvotes

I'm a CS student, and my usual study method is curiosity oriented, I use multiple online resources, go down rabbit holes, and by the end of a session I can explain concepts to myself pretty accurately. This works great for CS topics, but not for maths, which also needs practice problems to actually internalize theorems and formulas, and I really struggle to make myself do those.

This semester's maths course is Numerical Methods and Analysis, and the exam expects me to solve a variety of numerical problems using what we've been taught. That means a lot of practice, which I HATE. I have plenty of resources available, but I can't bring myself to open them, even though they aren't that hard. It's usually just applying a theorem and solving until you get the answer, IT'S VERY TEDIOUS but doable, unlike calculus.

To say that I SUCK at maths would be an understatement. I secondguess doing 55 + 38 in my head much less solve differential equations (thankfully calculators are allowed in the exam). And I can't get myself to sit down and study, it's much lower stimulation than what I'm used to (Right now I'm binging Better Call Saul and scrolling social media/listening to songs whenever I'm not watching it)

Exam's in 5 days. Any tips so that I am able to push through the dread and actually solve problems for once?? How do y'all study for your maths exams?

Accountability How do I stop procrastinating when I KNOW I need to study?

I've been insanely unproductive for the past month and I genuinely don't know how to fix it. I'm in 12th, boards are this year and I also have a law entrance exam in December, so I KNOW I have a lot to do and it's getting really close.

But somehow I'll do literally anything except study 😭 scroll reels, watch movies, talk to people, random useless stuff etc. And even when I finally sit down I can barely focus for 35-40 mins before giving up.

The worst part is I know studying is important for me, I just don't feel like doing it. Has anyone dealt with this? How did you actually get yourself out of this cycle?

Question What's the one thing you genuinely hate doing every week as a student?

I'm a computer science student building a productivity tool for university students.

I have one simple question:

What's one repetitive task during university that wastes your time every single week?

I'm not talking about AI doing homework. I mean annoying workflows like:

  • organizing notes
  • searching across PDFs
  • making flashcards
  • lab reports
  • group project organization
  • exam revision

What frustrates you the most, and why?

I'll read every reply—I'm trying to solve a real problem, not build something nobody needs.

Question I realized that I never knew how to study or take notes effectively - How do I start getting better?

Upvotes

Hi,

I’m in my early 30s and I have an exam coming in less than a month, with about 12 modules to study and know about marine ecosystem and cetaceans.

I just realized that I‘m bad at taking notes and study in general. probably the reason I wasn’t that good at school when I was younger.

For example, my notes are just shorter version of what I read (PDF) or notes of what's being said in live lecture or videos. So, instead of memorizing, I just copy...

I tried reading, then closing the document and try to write in my own words, but I’m just bad at memorizing this way too because I just don't know how to clean up the content to really see what matter and what is just bonus or filler content.

For example, one of my modules is about the marine ecosystem. I think I know the overall aspect of what the ecosystem is, but there is also a list of about 20 species and I don’t know if it’s just for general knowledge or not. Should I know everything about those species (color, size, etc.), or just something like "X and Y are important because A".

So, I just write down everything in my notebook which doesn't really help when going back into my notes for review.

And now, the exam is coming soon and I barely remember my first few modules… I wanted to rewrite my notes in a better way, but it may be a waste of time for now.

I really don’t know how to study, take notes, and just memorize things. I should have done active recall when I was learning the content as I was reading it. Now, I have to do everything at once.

I’m trying apps to create flashcards, quizzes, summaries, etc. to help me right now.

For the future, I want to find a new way to take notes to better memorize concepts and links. For different species, maybe grouping them by similarities instead of writing all of them one by one.

Sorry if I just seem stupid to not know basic things at my age.

I appreciate your help and support.

Giving Advice Timer Motivation

Most random thing I’ve ever posted about on Reddit. Just studied for an hour. Or more like “I was efficient for an hour”.

I took 10 minutes to check emails and message teachers, then hit the books.

I started a timer… mostly just to see how long I’d study before I get bored. But the longer I went- 15-20-30 minutes, the more I realized I enjoyed the fact that the number was growing!! I’ve literally never felt this motivated after a study session.

The only thing is when it gets past an hour, i feel like it’s dragging since that 1 in 1:00:00 doesn’t change… for an HOUR lol. But i suppose that offers me a good stopping point/ pomodoro break.

Accountability Will start to live in the library from now on.

I dont study when at home.even if i do,its for maybe an hr at max. I have decided to basically start living in the library now(exaggerated expression ofc). I will enter at 9am(it opens at that time) and will only return for dinner at 10pm. I'll eat lunch outside and will come home only to sleep at night. I have blocked out yt on my laptop,so no shorts/distracting videos. its 1st sept today. I have my entrance exam in 1st week of December. So about 90 days left. Lets give it my all. My plan is first to make notes. then Active recall the theory and solve problems without seeing solution. Keep track of wt i did throughout the day(in terms of how much i covered in portions). Lets give it my all :)

Question How to Stop Being "Lazy"

I've always been someone who didn't need to study. I just did some extra revision before my exams, worked with the information I listened to in class and got good grades. But it hasn't been working since 11th grade. The shift was something I couldn't manage and since I was never used to building the habit of consistency, I'm really struggling to get good grades now. I constantly feel disappointed by my performance but I'm also too "lazy" to put in the work because I'm not used to it and I still believe it's not necessary. Right now, I'm in A2 level and my boards are in like 5 months. I'm resitting 2 subjects and I really need to lock in. Tips are appreciated! Please help me out. Thank you!

The past week was bad, I had an appointment with the psychiatrist that left me concerned about my mental health and all. I need to go back to studying, but I don't want to, all I want is to go home and play games instead. What can I do to study despite my low mood? Before that appointment I was studying at least 4x/week.

Giving Advice I really want to study, but I’m so damn lazy. How do I get myself to actually do it?

Guys, I need some motivation 😭 I really want to study, but I’m so lazy and I can’t get myself to start. I always end up scrolling on my phone or doing something else.

How do you guys force yourself to study when you just don’t feel like it? 😭
