I write my Goodreads reviews 90% for myself and 10% for my VERY small group of GR “followers,” all who are my IRL friends and know me well. I never consider that strangers will see or care about my reviews, as I pay no mind to reviews by people I don’t know, especially not enough to take time to comment on them.

A couple years ago I was pretty shocked when a 2 Star review I gave to a BOTM book began getting attention from strangers. It started with a few likes and comments agreeing with me pointing out (what I felt was) a significant plot hole. It took a turn, with people criticizing me and my opinion before turning into something reminiscent of a political Facebook post with passionate comments from both sides.

At first I was slightly amused, then a bit unsettled when the comments turned particularly nasty, and now I’m just at peace with it.

Today, it sits at over 1k likes and 200+ comments. Some may see it as a seasonal read, and every year around this time I prepare myself for a new wave.

What should I do? I’m so annoyed because this was a review for a gifted book so I took a lot of time crafting a thoughtful review ugh

Every single time I open the Goodreads app, I get the popup asking for email verification. And I did verify it this morning and now when I opened the app, it asked for verification again. I stopped using it awhile ago, just because of this and today I thought I’d try again, and it keeps happening.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I have to read the whole book over the course of a semester for a class...so is it reasonable to count it towards my reading goal?

I just read a review that started with "Yawn." And ended with "I honestly have no idea why any avid book reader would give this more than 3 stars. Don’t read it."

Maybe it's just a me thing and I'm not built for the casual confidence with which strangers announce personal preferences as universal law, but isn't it more helpful to just review why the book didn't land for you rather than dictating no one read it?

I know this is slightly rant-ey but I suppose my question is... do you actually enjoy or find humor in these types of reviews? If so, I'd love your take on it.

EDIT: Getting hateful DM’s over a post about mean-spirited GR reviews is wild. This was meant to be a Sunday afternoon chat with other readers, to get differing opinions, etc.

It’s about the notifications "The group GROUPNAME will start reading BOOKTITLE on STARTDATE". I do know there had been a setting for how many days before STARTDATE the notofication should be sent to group members. But I cannot find it now.

I’m the group moderator (and creator, but AFAIK that does not count in Goodreads), and I have checked the group settings several times, nothing there.

I‘m trying to read as many books (I mostly read fiction with some thrillers, science fiction, horror and nonfiction sprinkled in) for the Choice Awards as possible. Since I mostly use libby I‘d love to already place some holds. Which books (that you liked) do you think are pretty much safe bets for this year?

Hi all. I want to separate my TBR by genre (one for YA, one for MG, one for graphic novels, etc) and I figured I'd use the new exclusive shelf feature to do so. I created the shelves, exported my library, spent 2 hours changing shelves in the spreadsheet, double-checked that all of the shelves were spelled the same in GR and in the sheet, and imported it. And...none of it took. I tried changing the shelf in GR and exporting again to see if there was some weird formatting thing I was missing, but no, I had all shelf names correct and it should all have imported correctly. Did I do something wrong? Is this even possible to do? Please help. TIA.

Edit: I already had some books on custom shelves that I had changed in GR, they exported and then imported just fine and it didn't get rid of the custom shelf.

Hey! I have a Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, and Goodreads is already linked to my Amazon account. It also works fine on my Kindle app on my phone.
But on my Paperwhite, it keeps telling me to “Link your Goodreads account” even though it’s already linked.
Anyone know how to fix this?

For this entire week I haven’t been able to access Goodreads content at all on my iPhone app. It will open the app, but will not load any content at all. Not my lists or recommended books, nothing. If I log in on a PC I can see everything just fine.

I’ve reinstalled the app three times to no avail. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Finished my Summer Challenge. Unfortunately on rather low note, as The Cotton House (Staff Shelves) was not for me.

I do not double my categories except the number ones (read any x books).

This time I tried to make a shelf to remember what I read for every category. I do not know if I will keep making new shelf for every challenge, or one for all of them and add the challenge in the notes with the category.

Edit: I have found my challenge data since Fall 2025, so I transformed my shelf to keep all the data.

Earlier today I accidentally deleted all of my books, which is more than 12 years of tracking. I was trying to import a book and mistook the button for deleting ALL of my books for deleting all the tries I made when trying to import the book to GoodReads.

I’ve searched for an option to get all my books back and have read that I’m not the only one accidentally deleting all books.

Goodreads’ customer service is very cold and not understanding at all. Only said that it was impossible and that I should visit Goodreads help.

I know it’s my own mistake - both for accidentally deleting and also for not having a backup. But a part of me still thinks Goodreads should have some sort of option for retrieving one’s books. At least within the first 24 hours. Or have the user enter the password before mass deleting.

I’m sad that I’ve wasted and lost more than 12 years of tracking - and I’m also sad that Goodreads doesn’t care about its users.

I realized I have a very predictable pattern.

I'll read something completely outside my usual taste, love it, and then spend the next month adding five books that are almost exactly like it to my TBR.

Has Goodreads ever made you notice a weird pattern about yourself as a reader?

I dont' know what Amazon is doing, but I have been using a Kindle to update Goodreads since the ability to do so started. I also use Calibre to keep track of my books, so knowing when I have read, and re-read a book isn't too dificult, but if you are only relying on Goodreads - your re-reads of books that have "new editions" out will be wiped out.

Normally, when you use a Kindle to move a book into re-reading it happens when you select "move to Goodreads shelf" from the cover menu. You will normally see it currently in the "read" shelf, then you select "Currently Reading" and proceed to read it. When you are done - Goodreads updates the shelves and your re-read start and finish dates will be there, along with any shelves you had.

Now - when you select a Goodreads shelf to put it on - there is no indication that it was ever on the shelf to begin with. So, selecting "currently reading" just puts it in Goodreads for the first time. Not combining and older edition you had with the current edition - it removes the edition you have in Goodreads all together - and puts this book in as a new book, added that day.

I dont' understand it fully, but I do know that there is no record of your old reads. No record of the book being in your library - the original add date is missing, the original read dates are gone. Its as if the book has never been there.

The only way to bypass this is probably buying the newer editions. I don't know. But I worry that if I have to reset and fix my shelves EVERYTIME I open a new book or re-read a book that was taken off I am going to have to go through this.

Hi! I’m trying to export my Goodreads library, but when I go to the export page I’m getting an “Invalid Page” message instead.

Is anyone else having this issue, or is the export page working normally for you?
