Yeah, I'm not sure why modern NA GYW have such big toe boxes. Even the Vibram side zips, I dislike their toe box. Otherwise, side zips are hard to come by in NA. But I do see vintage ones from the 70's etc. and they tend to have a much nicer toe box.

Best conditioner to use for Visvim mud dyed leather?

My wife recently bought some used Florsheim side zip (aka “Beatle Boots”) on eBay and to be honest it’s made me kinda jealous.

Most GYW brands that make something similar have a western toe curl that IMO doesn’t look as good as the old school side zips. These are a little chunky, but they’re the best I’ve seen so far. Thanks for posting!

I didn't mention quality because my assumption is that Japanese boots are very high quality and I want to focus on style. However, these are indeed in the same conversation as RDT when it comes to stitch quality and details. I feel it's important to state now because I did compare them to lesser quality boots, 3Sixteen and Our Legacy. Mushmans are in their own category for quality, and will most likely last a very long time with multiple resoles, similar to most high quality GYW boots.

No provenance for the leather, some models have fibre midsoles and generally about as attractive as Clark's.

I'm sure that they hold up to real use, just like $100 hardware store work boots do. They certainly don't belong on a 'best' list though, more like nice entry level.

very late to the conversation, but googled chukkas and this popped up. all I have to say is good lord, what a list. for people who were hoping to find actual chukkas, aka vellies, aka veldskoen, aka the original desert boots used by Boer farmers in South Africa and taken back to England by Clark and refined into the dainty, toe smashing varierty of footwear represented here, google Jim Green Footwear. They still make the rugged, rough out gull grain leatther, crepe soled boots intended for trekkiing across desert and harsh bush terrain and they make them in a variety of styles. They even have dervative types designed for African Rangers. These are the real thing, not that the ones listed are imaginary or anything, but these pones are intended for actually rugged use.
