Maybe this is just me but I’m just underwhelmed by the mayoral candidates so far.

Yes to housing. Yes to safety. Yes to affordability. Taxes, transit, sure. But every mayor in every city is dealing with this stuff. Has any candidate actually said what specifically  makes Guelph special and what their vision is for keeping it that way?

I keep thinking about this because of the slow “enshittification” of the city that just drives me totally nuts. The rock facade below the Welcome to Downtown Guelph sign has been half stripped for over a year. That new retaining wall below the Boathouse on the Speed River looks like something you’d see next to a highway offramp. The pinnacles came off the Basilica spires, the iconic symbol of Guelph for the past 100 year, and everyone just kind of shrugged.

I dunno. It just feels like we’re slowly losing the things that makes Guelph feel like Guelph and not another soulless pitstop on the 401.

And now downtown, which is one of the major things that makes Guelph special, is torn up and going to be torn up for years. Based on the stuff above I have zero faith the city leaves it better than they found it.

Which just sucks. Guelph has this wonderfully weird mix of stuff going for it. The rivers, the lake, the Basilica, the university, Hillside, indie shops, breweries, artists, musicians, makers, manufacturers.

Whoever wins this fall will be mayor when the city turns 200. You’d think that would be a pretty obvious thing to talk about? But unless I missed it, there’s not a mention of this on any of the candidates’ websites.

Would genuinely love to hear a candidate explain what they think makes Guelph special and what they’d do to make sure we dont slowly lose that.

Starting in Dec 1st 2023, a Bylaw regulating Short term rentals in Guelph started. One of requirements was that the STR be the principle residence of the owner. I understood that the city would not be actively looking for these properties and would instead depending on reports from people.

I am aware of 2 properties near me, where the owners do not live at the property, and have split the property ( basement apt + above ground apt ), into one being a regular long term rental, and the other part being a short term rental. Both addresses have become a problem to neighbours because of the short term rental becoming party rental locations.

I emailed [licensing@guelph.ca](mailto:licensing@guelph.ca) about each address, including links to archived ads for the long term rental side, and the active short term rental ads. I gave it a few weeks, and still have not heard anything. The purpose of showing evidence of the long term rental is to show that the whole house is rented, and therefore not the principle residence of the owner.

Anyone else have experience reporting a possible illegal short term rental. Did the city enforce is own bylaw?

Looks like Guelph Costco no longer offers oil changes. I have an older car and I have been changing oil at Costco Guelph for 6 years now. It was very convenient and would get my shopping done while the oil change happened. I knew Costco was phasing out oil changes from a while now and believe after today, no more oil changes are offered at any Costco location in Canada.

I've just moved to Guelph and I am looking for a small independent pet supply shop for crickets and horn worms.

I know PetSmart has crickets, but their idea of large is barley medium, and I've caught them giving me dead ones inserted of live.

I’m in a bit of a scheduling bind with my move. My lease at my current place ends today (August 31st), so I have to be completely out tonight. However, I can't move into my new place until tomorrow, September 1st.

I have a 15 foot U Haul truck packed with all of my belongings. Since I can't leave it at either property tonight, I'm trying to figure out where I can safely park it overnight where it won't get ticketed or towed.
Ideally, I’d like to sleep in my car right next to it (or in the truck itself if needed) just to keep an eye on my stuff so nothing gets broken into.

Does anyone know of any safe, well-lit lots, truck stops, or spots in or just outside of Guelph where this is allowed? I looked into downtown parkades, but I'm worried about height clearance for a 15ft truck.
Any advice or suggestions would be amazing.

The fentanyl fold is everywhere in the city. Well I know it's like this in every city now. But seriously? What is causing so many people to become addicts?

I've never seen so many people addicted to drugs and I've volunteered at stepping stone when it was called the drop in center back in 2016. Did it have issues back then? You bet. But nothing like this. People are turning into fentanyl zombies like I've never seen before.

Drugs are not the answer. There is always hope. don't use drugs!

Hey everyone, looking for some advice and wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar. I've been battling this for around 3 months now.

We received a water bill for $720 covering a single month when our house was essentially vacant. We were charged for 139 cubic metres of water, which is roughly the equivalent of 3 full swimming pools. Every other month for the past 3 years, we've never exceeded 25 cubic metres, and the very next bill after the disputed period was $30 for 1 cubic metre, and so on.

I've escalated through every channel: multiple emails to the billing department, the billing supervisor, a formal Ombudsman complaint, and now my Ward 5 councillors, and the City's response has consistently been "the meter is accurate, charges stand" with zero explanation for the spike.

This all happened during the transition from Alectra to City of Guelph billing. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Any advice on next steps would be hugely appreciated.

Anyone know of a dentist available for emergencies on a Sunday? My son appears to have a gum abscess/infection (had wisdom teeth out 2 months ago), and the swelling is getting more painful and noticeable. We have an appt with the oral surgeon but they can't fit us in until Thursday, and Dr. AI tells us it should be seen immediately. All suggestions appreciated. Thank you.
