When I originally bought my hammock a couple years ago I purchased a cheap $50 underquilt off Amazon. And I mean, it did the job... I didn't die of hypothermia. But I would still wrestle my way into sleeping bag once in the hammock.

I pulled the trigger on buying a quality underquilt from Little Shop of Hammocks (www.littleshopofhammocks.com), was happy to support a fellow Canadian making quality products. I did a test run this weekend, overnight temps were 14C, which I do expect a bit cooler on my trips coming up but it was at least cool enough to see how it works.

I went to bed in my usual socks, PJ pants and thin long sleeve shirt. But I only brought a blanket with me. Fell asleep quickly, but within an hour I woke up super warm. So I got up, took off the socks and PJ pants and pushed the blanket off of me. I slept the rest of the night snug as a bug in a rug without a blanket or extra layers. I'm leaving for Algonquin Park on Wednesday next week, and I can't wait not to pack a sleeping bag with me.

So if you are wondering if a high quality underquilt is worth it, they are worth every penny!!! Thank you for all the ideas and suggestions everyone. Happy Hanging!

I like my quick hammock set up. Just me and my dog in the woods. Hope yalls day is as good as mine

By no means is it UL,but i never have to worry about a stick or something deflating.....the whole assembly is what I made.

Aside from the hammock itself, the mylar tarp, and blankets i cut and stitched it all together. The entire hammock system fits in my pad.

The pad is made from a 12oz canvas tarp(cut from the green outermost tarp) with a tarp(same as pics 6+7) that was taco folded,shiny side out, around a layer of fleece then stitched to the top(closest to my back).

Lay down a wool blanket overtop, then under my woobie and second wool thats folded over the end of my pad.

The bug net was honestly the worst material to work with, its not pretty, but its functional.

Overall set up was a loose arrangement due to being at home and not having a spot between trees,car port worked though.

In the event of no hammock area the pad would also function quiet well as a ground mattress.

When you compare Hammock camping with respect to Tent , which do you think is more thrilling, comfortable and safe?

I hammock camped for the first time recently — I loved it, and I owe a lot to what I learned from this community, so thank you all — and I came away wondering if I’m a head right guy or a head left guy.

Night 1:
-I used the tie outs to do a head right and feet left setup.
-Slept great, alternating between back sleeping and side sleeping.
-Never attempted head left because I planned to do it on night 2.

Night 2:
-I had planned to use the tie outs to setup a head left / feet right situation in order to compare, but the ground was not receptive to stakes, so I didn’t use any tie outs.
-I slept okay, it was much harder to get comfortable than it was the first night. I tried both head left and head right, and neither was great (could have been due to lack of tie outs, or because I didn’t nail the hang angle as well as I had on night one, or a mix of the two).

Basically, I had intended to do an experiment but I failed to control for the appropriate variables.

Anyway, the upshot is, I don’t know if I’m a head right person or a head left person, and I don’t think I’ll have another chance to test out the two positions any time in the near future. (I was using a borrowed symmetrical hammock w symmetrical bug net.)

So this got me wondering… Is there any sort of indicator for which you’re likely to prefer? For example, with snowboarding, you can tell whether someone would be “regular” or “goofy” stance by seeing which foot they lead with when they run and slide across the floor. (Also by which foot they put out first when pushed from behind.) Is there a version of that for head right vs head left? Or does everyone just have to learn by trial and error?

Asking because I’d like to buy an asymmetrical hammock to save weight and space, and I don’t want to regret the purchase.

Head right felt great, but I don’t feel like my head left attempt made for a fair comparison, and it seems like if I am in fact a head right person, I’d be in the minority.

I guess a secondary question is, am I (or are we) overthinking this? Would all of the head left people be perfectly comfortable in a head right setup if they ever tried it?

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I am looking to upgrade the hammock I take backpacking. I do not sleep in it overnight, and have no plans to. I just enjoy lounging in a hammock after a long day of hiking and am comfortable carrying the extra weight to do that.

That said, I would like to drop the weight as much as reasonably possible while still maintaining some comfort and durability.

Right now I have an Eno SingleNest and Atlas Straps. Ideally I would like to keep the straps if possible and just look for a hammock itself that would work with those straps. However if I need to buy new ones that is fine. I don’t have a set budget, I am just looking at options.

Does anyone have any recommendations for this type of set up?

First time out! Went well, slept great, and so…. No bugs!?! You all were right - the Wise Owl bugnet was a hassle, and when I crawled in, it felt claustrophobic (that’s a thing for me with very small tents or mummy bags). So I ditched it. Lots of flies and gnats around my campsite, but when I crawled into my hammock, I didn’t get a single bite all night long. I’m guessing that was the permethrin. Also didn’t use my Nemo sleeping pad, the underquilt was great.

Any tips for bug nets that are not “in your face” and are in fact pretty spacious?

Just tried a Travelbird Underquilt Mosquito Net. It fit the bottom of my 11' hammock similarly to a 3/4 length underquilt and worked a charm.

I have recently taken up hammock camping in Tropical SE Asia and Japan. My set-up is a single layer Dream Hammock Darien with a built in bug net due to the heat.

Having read of people using double layered hammocks or a bottom quilt to stop insect bites i was worried about being bitten through the bottom single layer, by mosquitos and evil-big horseflies in Japan.

I sprayed my hammock with permethrin and used the net and it seems like the perfect solution to a very specific problem.

What was needed after a full day of riding into the mountains? A breeze and a scenery by the sea.

I found a cheap 3 season underquilt on Amazon. Its pretty decent. Its similar to a pinch liner, but I would say about 1.5 times thicker?

I rigged up a "flying porch mode" system for my tarp. Its really simple, and eliminates on ground poles and guylines to get hung up on (my dog kept getting wrapped around my poles when I took him camping). The same system would work just as well with a tarp shelter setup if you camp on ground. What's cool, is you can easily adjust the pitch of the flying side by how long or short your tie outs are. Yes, you could use other trees, provided there are other trees in the right spots, but that also puts more lines out where youre walking to have to duck under, etc. I did a quick cellphone video in my yard, video quality is poor, but it works to show the system until I get a proper video done.

So I have a Hennessy hammock that I intend to use to motorcycle camping trips. One thing I’m finding stressful it the time to set it up (100% due to me being new) but the whole thing seems like it could be massively simplified. In my head, I’m imagining connecting a D ring or something similar in place of the paracord, then running a ratchet strap from the D-Ring around the tree and simply putting a loop on the strap itself for the end took to loop back around and attach to. Insanely simply setup with no knots/tying to worry about. Has anyone run something like this? Is there a better alternative? Please keep in mind, I’ve used this to camp twice. Trying to simplify so I feel confident and happier using it more often. This should theoretically help me span greater and shorter gaps.

Hi all!

I recently got the bug for hammock camping. I love the idea of how simplified camp set up is and not needing to bring a sleeping pad.

Last summer I bought the wanderlust kit from Hammockgear. It included (I think 11ft; it has a structural ridgeline) circadian hammock.

Since then I have slept in it 7 nights total. And TBH not one of them was a good night's sleep 🙁

Last night was my last straw after 3 hours of being half asleep and tossing and turning and getting up to strap angle from the tree etc I gave up and basically spent the entire night awake looking at rei labor day deals on sleeping pads.

I think I've tried everything to make this hammock comfortable. I have tried adjust the strap angle which makes the ridgeline more or less tight. I've tried setting the foot side higher than the head side. etc etc. Normally I am a side sleeper but I was under the impression that if i laid diagonally enough it would be flat enough to side sleep. This has not been the case for me. It does flatten out when I am diagonal, but there is still some curvature which does not feel too good on the side.

I have also tried ponying up and just embracing sleeping on my back. My upper back feels cuddled and coddled which feels great but I have a tinge of pain in my lower back and legs are just not that comfortable. I tried a pillow under the knees which kinda helperd but only kinda. Really the only position that kinda comfortable was after putting a foam sleep pad in and curling up in the fetal position.

I don't want to give up on hammock camping yet, I am still in love with the idea of it.

I wanted to post here and ask for advice. Has anyone else really found it hard to get comfortable in a hammock?

- Should I consider a longer maybe 12 ft hammock? Or buy some wider material on ripstop by the roll and make a longer and wider hammock?

- Should I change my expectations of comfort? Expect to not get a flat lay but just keep doing it until my body hopefully adapts?

- Any other tips and tricks?

Hey guys. My dream hammock wingspan just came in and I can already tell I'm going to love it.

I'm using it with my turtle bug stand. Problem is, I can't get the right hang (Ridgeline way too loose) due to continuous loop being way too long. I need to shorten it 4 inches or so.

Does anyone have experience using turtle bug stand? I'm thinking best way is make loops as short as possible. Foot end will be almost touching the stand top end, and then I can hopefully get head end 6-7 inches lower but we will see. I've already tried about every possible configuration setting of the straps.

Lack of hang trees due to steep slopes finally forced me to use my Tacoma’s Yakima rack as an anchor point so I set up the “rainbow” lounger along with my fantastic Hammock Gear Wanderlust bundle. Didn’t use the silpoly fly this time. Webbing slings around the Yakima cross-member and sturdy carabiners gave quick-disconnects for daily canoe trips during this 5-day base camp in Oregon.

I'll preface my post by saying I don't (yet) own a hammock. I'm just intrigued by them as an alternative to tents.

However my mind is confused with the practical side. To me they seem perfectly suited for treks through the forest - but then what if your trail isn't always dense forest?

Do most of you also have a tent and basically bring whichever best suits the trip?

What if the trip is part forest and parts without trees, do you ever struggle in finding a suitable spot to put up the hammock at the stage you need to camp?

Theres many through hike routes in Europe (where I live) for example with few trees. Just seems a bit like when I watch hammock camping videos on YouTube they're always in the middle of the forest which may only be a small fraction of the hikes I've been on.

Wild camping in many parts here is also illegal which further restricts your spots to camp. So again finding two suitable trees limits options.

I guess the crux of my question is how restrictive is hammock camping to your routes?

Why do I keep seeing so many set up near water sources when it’s one of the main “don’t do’s” of hammock camping?

I went camping a few weeks ago and slept in a friends hammock, I was amazed at how comfortable and well I slept, so I convinced my honey to upgrade from our tent+air mattress, and it went awesome! We were warm and cozy, and we stayed dry!

I got everything off amazon and I’m pretty happy with everything! The hammock is a dupe of the eno double (I’m 5’5 and a side sleeper, so I don’t feel like I need a longer hammock, but maybe an upgrade will be in the future), the underquilt is Crosship, the bug net is onewind (I love that it’s got a “floor” so I can store my things in it to keep the spiders off, and everything is reachable from “bed”), and my rainfly is the 12x14ft Gold Armour (I was worried the size would be cumbersome, and it did take a lot of squishing to get it back in its stuff sack, but being able to sit under it when the rain started was great). For blankets I just used a big fuzzy blanket from home topped with an open sleeping bag, and I was as warm as I am in my bed at home!

Our other upgrades for this camp trip included a Thermacell, we got the one that uses fuel canisters and were really happy with how well it worked, and we got a propane fire pit since there’s a burn ban and that was awesome, I can’t wait to get out there again!

The part of hammock camping I underestimate is arriving tired and then realizing camp still needs a bunch of little trips between trees, pack, tarp, suspension, and whatever I forgot ten feet away. None of those steps is hard by itself, but after a long hike the setup order suddenly matters. I’m wondering if the better approach is less about lighter gear and more about staging everything before starting pick the trees, drop the pack once, pull out suspension and tarp together, then work outward instead of constantly walking back to the bag.

Hammocks already avoid some of the ground-level setup of a tent, but there’s still plenty of reaching and moving around when you’re tired. people who regularly arrive at camp after a long hiking day, what single change to your setup order has saved the most energy?
